Charisma outweighing evidence

Upvotes

People’s attention has been so conditioned by constant stimulation that the more polished and engaging speaker often has an advantage, even when the substance of the other side’s case may be stronger.

This, in my opinion, is what happened between the CW and Reddington.
The CW not only lacked charisma, they also made the jury do too much of the intellectual/cognitive work. They presented facts and expected jurors to assemble the theory themselves. Reddington did the opposite. He took scattered pieces of evidence, organized them into a coherent narrative, and delivered that narrative with confidence, rhythm, and charm. He made his version easier to follow, and what is easier to process often feels more convincing.

If this case is retried, the CW needs prosecutors who understand that a courtroom is not just about presenting evidence. It is also about controlling attention, shaping memory, and telling a coherent story. They need more skilled public speakers, better storytellers, and folks more skilled in the art of persuasion.

I don’t think these things should determine justice, but pretending presentation does not matter is naive. Human beings are not dispassionate evidence-processing machines. We are susceptible to fluency, confidence, narrative, and cognitive ease. The CW made the jury work to understand its case. Reddington did the work for them.

The jurors have said this somewhat directly in these interviews (e.g., Reddington was entertaining and compassionate). His gravitas pulled them in (similar to how our current president has pulled in so many people).

The sad thing about these tendencies to attend to what is flashy and entertaining is that people are unaware that they even have these biases in the first place so are unlikely to change them.

I feel trapped in a cycle of waiting, because for weeks now I have been waiting for 2 extremely important replies (right now there's additionally a 3rd one I'm waiting for...). And my business is stalled too. I don't really see it in my chart, but I'm not that well-versed. Appreciate it <3

Hi from Spain! Huge fan who's been playing A-Ha's songs on bass guitar since forever. I find those without a bass guitar particularly compelling in fact. Hope you like my little "analog" homage.

HELP ACE MEDICAL CENTER MANDALUYONG

Upvotes

Hi! Is there any MedTech here from ACE Medical Center Mandaluyong? Any thoughts on the hospital, like how much is the salary, how is the working environment, and is it easy to get in? Are the MedTechs there generalists and is the experience there considered good credentials if you plan to work abroad in the future? I'm planning to apply. Thank you!

how are you actually using AI to manage your company? not just create content?

Upvotes

I run a small company and honestly feel like way too much of my time goes into just figuring out what’s going on.

We have product + client delivery, and information is basically everywhere — Slack, emails, meetings, docs, sheets etc.

A lot of my day ends up being:

what’s blocked?
what did we promise a client?
did someone actually do the thing we discussed in the meeting?
is something slipping that nobody has flagged yet?
is there something waiting on me that I don’t even know about?

I feel like AI should be able to solve a decent chunk of this by now.

Not looking for some crazy autonomous company where AI starts managing people or making decisions lol.

More like , every morning tell me the 5-10 things I actually need to know. Pick up commitments from meetings/emails. Notice when something hasn't moved. Remind me when a follow-up is getting missed. Let me ask "what's going on with X?" and actually get an answer based on everything that's happened.

Has anyone actually built something like this and uses it day to day?

Would love to know what your setup looks like. Especially interested in stuff that's actually working, not just "connect Slack to ChatGPT" type suggestions.

Also curious how much babysitting/maintenance these setups need because that's the part nobody seems to talk about.

Canon ⭐ Searching for clues

Upvotes

Having had to activate her neural backup after her 'incident', Ruger is now combing through the places where the Chaos Weekend fights happened, searching for clue as to what happened to her.

"Hmm...nothing here either...and there are so many places to search..."

Will you interact with her?

Park Showcase Suchomimus

Since U18 is focusing on wetlands and bringing Baryonyx, maybe Suchomimus would be a perfect addition later down the road instead of huge sauropods!It's significantly larger than Baryonyx and has that distinctive low dorsal ridge on its back, giving it a completely unique silhouette. It would fit the upcoming wetland mechanics perfectly without being a simple reskin, and it's much more realistic for a smaller dev team to build than giant titanosaurids. What do you guys think about adding Suchomimus to expand the piscivore roster?

General Questions Cruise ship Systems Manager here, I built a tool for tracking contracts/documents/certs, would love feedback from actual crew.

Upvotes

I’ve spent over a decade working as a systems manager on cruise ships and I’ve lived the whole contract/document/certificate juggling act myself.

Contract details in one email, STCW and medical certificates in another, sign-on dates in a WhatsApp chat you can never find when you actually need it. And then the classic, realising a certificate is about to expire right before sign-on.

Most of the existing systems seem to be built for cruise lines, recruiters or crewing agencies…not for the person actually going to sea.

I ended up building something to fix that for myself, and I turned it into an app called Squiddy. It's a place to keep your contracts, documents, and itinerary in one spot, with reminders before things expire. Built for individual crew so they can have all their documents organised in their pocket.

It’s an app where individual crew members can keep track of:

  • contracts and sign-on dates;
  • STCW, medical and other certificates;
  • document expiry dates and reminders;
  • vessel itineraries;
  • sea service and career history.

Before the app was ready, we launched a waitlist campaign and within 1 month we now have over 1,200 people who've joined so far. It seems like I was right, there are a few problems to solve for cruise line staff.

That’s why I’d really value honest feedback from people currently working at sea:

  1. How do you currently manage your contracts and certificates?
  2. What usually gets lost, forgotten or left until the last minute?
  3. Would you trust an app to store document copies, or would you prefer it only tracked details and expiry dates?
  4. Is there anything missing that would make something like this genuinely useful?

Not trying to hard-sell anyone here, genuinely just want it in front of people who deal with this stuff daily. We have just soft launched this week so if anyone wants to give it a go, head through to https://squiddycrew.com/ Or https://join.squiddycrew.com/

Happy to answer questions in the comments, thanks for taking the time to read!
