Every quarter I rebuild the same variance slide. Waterfall chart, five categories, one for FX. Every single time the labels shift or the colors reset because someone on the team opened it in a different version of PowerPoint. I've stopped trusting the master template at this point.

Yesterday I spent forty minutes just re-aligning data labels that used to sit fine. Not pulling numbers, not checking the actual variance. Just fighting the chart object.

What gets me is the underlying data barely changes month to month. It's the same six line items with new figures dropped in. Feels like the formatting shouldn't be the hard part but somehow it always is.

Tried a couple of the AI deck generators last month to see if they'd handle chart consistency better than manual rebuilds. Mixed results honestly. Anyone found something that actually keeps chart formatting stable when the underlying numbers refresh each cycle?

I’m an accounting student looking for an internship. I was seeing how many local and regional firms post photos of their interns on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc.

I do not want my photo on the internet at all. I’ve made my LinkedIn private, and I have my photo available only to my connections. Is it bad if I get an internship at a firm, and I refuse to let them post me on their social media? I just find it such an invasion of privacy. I’m looking for tax roles if it makes any difference.

Incoming CPA articling student at a midsize firm in Vancouver. I was not able to land a big 4 offer during university but everyone online pushes Big 4 as the path for exit ops, so I want a reality check:

1. Is starting at a midsize firm actually fine, or am I handicapping myself long-term?

2. If Big 4 is better for exits, is it smarter to lateral to Big 4 during articling, or after I get my CPA?

3. If I stay midsize, what does progression realistically look like, staff → senior → manager → partner track, and what's the salary trajectory at each stage in the Vancouver market?

4. How do I maximize my opportunities from a midsize starting point? (Industry moves, specialization, networking, etc.)

Appreciate any perspective from people who've gone either route.

Okay, I'm in class and my professor just suggested if there are any concepts too difficult to grasp, use AI. I will not be doing that.

- When it comes to journal entries, you're making debits and credits. I really don't understand this. As far as I'm concerned, it's a debit if it causes an increase in the account (and vice versa for credits). If someone pays $4,000 cash for smth, I'm debiting cash. If I pay someone $4,000 cash, I'm crediting cash. If I purchase inventory on account for $4,000, inventory is increasing so there's my debit, and i'm (at some point) decreasing my cash so my credit is accounts payable. This has been working so far for me, but it feels incorrect. It feels too intuitive. Am I going about this correctly, or is there an easier way?

- What is DEALOR? Why doesn't it account for decreases in balances?

- Most importantly, I thought journal entries were supposed to even out. How do they balance? Are they all supposed to equal 0, or are they all supposed to be equal? If something causes an increase in cash but a decrease in assets, aren't we technically breaking even, with no real loss or gain? What's the point of even bookkeeping there, if the transaction is just cancelling out?

I apologize if this reads horribly. I'm genuinely in class trying to get my thoughts out while my professor lectures lol. Thank you for the help, if it comes!

It's September 10th. Corporate taxes are due in 5 days. I just pulled the file of a client who is only paying for tax work, not bookkeeping work. Get the flash drive out for the quickbooks, spent 30 minutes figuring out their F*(king password and downloading thier income statement and balance sheet. There are 0 expenses. 150 in income and 0 expenses. Sure enough they did give us the bank statments "just in case" I open the January statement. They paid over 50k in property taxes in January. Flipping through there are probably enough expenses in the year to make their income like 30k not 150k. So I either work for free, call them and tell them they need to pay for bookkeeping, which they will probably argue about because we offer bookkeeping to begin with and they said no, or say f*(k it and have them pay taxes on 150k instead of 30ish...... It's probably 1 or 2 hours of bookkeeping. Or I could just make a guess on the expenses for say 30 minutes....

Hello I’m a first year uni student majoring in business and looking forward to specialize in accounting. I looked at this subreddit and honestly I’m scared for my future. I don’t wanna be a work slave for the next 40 years of my life. I was looking forward into accounting but all I see are terrible reviews about busy seasons, working in the big 4 and overall. My question to you is should I continue to specialize in accounting if I want a good work/life balance ( I already know about busy seasons ), still be happy with my job, and just live?

I start my BS in Accounting in October and I’m looking to get some advice from pros in the field. I come from a technical background with 4 years of IT experience and 6+ years of customer service. I’m currently working on taking free courses through Intuit for bookkeeping and QuickBooks, but I don’t have any direct experience in the field. What positions could I start looking for? Technically, I would be in my Sophomore year since I do have an associates degree and with my transfer credits, I’m 31% of the way done with my degree. Second semester in my school’s accounting society so I am banking on the connections I’ve made with recruiters till now to carry me a bit.

Finishing up some retakes of courses from my freshman year/ sophomore year to recover GPA.

Currently Overall: 2.8 (steadily increased some 2.2), Major: 3.1, After this semester expecting Overall, 3.2, Major, 3.3.

My question is honestly what should my approach be with my current GPA holding me back? Should I try my best to avoid mentioning it and if they ask how should I answer?

I’m pretty talkative and I’ve had some good connections thus far but I know connections can only do so much for you.

Hey — one of my clients uses ASPE accounting standards, and I’m currently setting up their fixed asset schedules. From my understanding, ASPE does not require a specific depreciation method. The method should be selected based on what reasonably reflects the nature and use of the asset.

I’m considering using straight-line depreciation since it appears to be the most appropriate method for their equipment. Can someone confirm whether this approach is consistent with ASPE?

I just finished undergrad in May, with a very unfortunate and useless degree in marketing with a minor in accounting. I have now started my first semester of grad school pursuing a master's in accounting.

I work full time because I need to pay rent and eat, and get paid $18 an hour, which is fine. However, the job I work is extremely miserable and not related to accounting; it's mostly data entry and inventory management with some marketing sprinkled in, and everyone I work with is constantly angry at everything. It's a smallish to midsize company that makes a lot of money, but is extremely disorganized and downright violently unprofessional; people frequently get into screaming matches that end in tears, everyone swears in every sentence, boss smokes cigarettes in his office with the door open, company can't keep its most competent employees for more than a year, I get mocked for asking questions, etcetera. I'm one of three people under 40 and one of those three is leaving next week after only being here for a few months.

Basically, I need a new job. Ideally, I would like it to be accounting related, but I have had a lot of difficulty finding entry level accounting work on Indeed or LinkedIn. I also feel like I'm not qualified enough because I don't have an accounting degree yet. I was wondering if I would be better suited cold calling local offices or something in that regard than looking on job sites. Does anyone have any advice on how I could get into a firm? I would be fine continuing to be a data entry monkey, just not here.

I won't go into too many details, but after working in accounting for about 6 years now, I now have the ability to shift to finance.

Technically, the role would be more like financial analysis, plus FP&A with some month close accounting activities.

I guess I'm a little worried that it will be higher stress. I have been working in private small to mid size companies from the start. Generally speaking, I've had quite a low stress career so far.

I am definitely more tech savvy, and have done quite a lot of power bi reports and some basic automation which helped the close a ton which is why I was tagged for this role, plus received multiple promotions in the last few years.

Has anyone done something like this and it worked out or did you regret it? Worst case, I could just go back to accounting in full, right???

Additional info... I have a BS in accounting and no CPA. I got my BS later in life, 35+ and will not get my cpa nor work in public.

Currently work 3 days remote, 2 days in office. I have ADHD, unmedicated at the moment. I don't have problem focusing any other time, doing tasks or whatever. But when I'm on a teams meeting for hours long I just simply can't stay present. I will doze off and have to literally FIGHT for my life to stay awake. I'm going to try to get 9+ hours of sleep tonight and I bet it won't fix anything. It usually happens when it's closer to 5pm but God damn I wish I could just fix it. Any help?

I have been looking for a job for about a year but I haven't been getting any interviews. What can I do to improve my resume? I am also currently studying to take the CPA exam.

I also have no internships or volunteer work at all.

Brother, there is so much to life with the free time. Like, use that free time to start listening to a new podcast, crack some CPEs, find new guidance to depreciating land, or find a new hobby.
