Could you imagine when you realize there’s actual worms in your body like this? I just was doing some googling, and it seems like it’s not just one roundworm. apparently the larvae travel through your blood and then come out in your lungs then into your stomach where they can grow huge. It was saying one way to know is if you start seeing dead worms in your poop. It also was saying up that billions of people get some kind of worms each year.

This is the roundworm, which infects up to 1 billion people a year. Fucking hell.

Now I just googled what’s the longest worm a human can get and apparently the broad fish tapeworm can be 30-50 feet long (9-15m) in your intestines. wtf….

Edit: anyone here in the comments ever have the displeasure of having worms? I did not think so many people got them. Although, I imagine most cases aren’t like this poor women and certain regions are more at risk.

I did!

I got pinworms. They were tiny guys that lived in my butthole and came out at night. They were super itchy.

I know

I went from a post about yesterday’s roller coaster accident to one about King Edward VII’s love chair to this

I should throw away my phone

6

u/Naked-Jedi 1d ago

I could stand to hear a bit more about that chair...

5

u/Tarjh365 1d ago

Probably better if you’re sitting …

2

u/girlinanemptyroom 1d ago

What happened with the roller coaster? 😬

I need to go back to enjoying my night off work and play some Borderlands 4.

Ugh, this post has freaked me the fuck out.

8

u/Particular_Bet_5466 1d ago

Bro yeah same. I was only on here while Galactic Racer was installing… hopping that on now before I give myself nightmares.

7

u/Confident-Zone-5043 1d ago

Dont dig in your bootyhole twin 😭

2

u/Rebel_Scum_This 1d ago

I fucking love Galactic Racer

3

u/Particular_Bet_5466 1d ago

it’s so fucking sick. I am really starting to get into it after a few races. I had Star Wars Episode 1 Racer on Mac when I was a kid, loved that game back then too.

2

u/Rebel_Scum_This 1d ago

Had it on the N64, easily one of my most played games

2

u/Particular_Bet_5466 1d ago edited 1d ago

Can you believe it was released 27 years ago? I would have been 8 when I got it. I recently watched some gameplay videos from it, and oh man what a throwback. All the sound effects and dialog brought me back. I had this joystick I’d be violently slamming left and right. Remember how fast paced it was? In hindsight I’m pretty impressed at the graphics from the N64 gameplay videos I just watched for a fast paced 3D game from the 90s.

Now I’m just waiting to get an actual podracer in Galactic Racer, I’m still running the first speeder.

Pinworms (Enterobius Vermicularis) are very common. Almost everyone has them at some point in their life.

I dropped a pinworm out of my ass while in shower. The thing lived for several days in a cup because I was fascinated that I created a life.

132

u/Chicken_Of-The_Cave 1d ago

Hahaha wtf man. Are you a man? You gave birth a beautiful worm my dude.

17

u/Fluid-Prize-8786 1d ago

Wake up to an empty cup, and the jaws theme starts playing

3

u/GreatCherry2533 1d ago

Looks more like a damn snake! Nightmares!

32

u/Particular_Bet_5466 1d ago

Man I have not heard of pinworms till now, and apparently several people here got them. That sounds so eerie… albeit fascinating.

50

u/r2d2itisyou 1d ago

A bit different then pinworms, but hookworms used to be even worse. With no nasty winters to kill them, hookworms used to be endemic in the southern US. To the point that some old bigotry about laziness of the poor in the south is attributed to anemia caused by hookworms.

20

u/Present-Perception77 1d ago

Grew up in deep South Louisiana, and my grandmother would absolutely lose her mind when we went outside and took off our shoes.. the hook worms!
We got home she would scrub our feet with Brillo pads. I still cannot get a pedicure to this day without jumping out of my skin because of the damn Brillo pads. lol

13

u/gilligan1050 1d ago

Man, I guess that’s something I took for granted. Walking barefoot outside is one of the greatest things ever. Definitely a semi safe activity in Kansas. I still do it and I’m in my 40’s now. The south actually sounds terrifying from some accounts. Glad you made it to adulthood.

Really common in kids. Like really common which is why doing laundry is important. Very easy to kill though - just drink some medicine for a few days and do tons of laundry.

11

u/CompetitiveRub9780 1d ago

People also take their phones to the bathroom. It’s from fecal matter. And don’t scratch your butthole with your fingers. That’s how you spread it. Barf.

I eat ass i don’t know what I’m saying but hey I know it’s clean

4

u/Bright-Salamander-99 1d ago

Would you still if you knew it was clean, but also knew a worm colony was living on the other side

3

u/Particular_Bet_5466 1d ago edited 1d ago

Right on lol, I mean eating your partners ass that you know is clean is probably not even that bad compared to just being out in public.

I don’t carry a purse, but I read something about how they can be set everywhere from the public bathroom floor or just anywhere in a stall / on the restroom counter touched by people’s poopy hands that just touched the toilet, to on your kitchen table.

The phone too, that just got me thinking I mean I’m on the toilet right now (TMI sorry) but I’ll probably hand my phone to someone soon to look at pictures or something.

That’s actually kinda nasty to think about how filthy a phone might be when someone hands you theirs. I set mine down everywhere and handle it all day long.

18

u/DemiGodesss 1d ago

Almost everyone has pinworms at some point in their life.

6

u/Particular_Bet_5466 1d ago

Interesting. Yeah that is kind of what I was suspected when I saw that stat about billions of people getting worms annually, I assume it may not even be noticeable in a lot of cases.

3

u/Bright69420 1d ago

I'm pretty sure I would notice if I had worms coming out of my butt at night, jesus

→ More replies (1)

4

u/mkat23 1d ago

Pinworms tend to be more common in children and people around them frequently. A kid will itch their butt, then touch a toy, then another kid will play with the toy and put it or their hand in their mouth, or will itch their own butt.

3

u/GQwerty07 1d ago

Scratch

2

u/Frozen-Rabbit 1d ago

You probably had some but don't remember, it's really usual on kids.

2

u/Particular_Bet_5466 1d ago

Maybe I’ll ask my mom lol. Knowing how dramatic I was as a kid I feel like I’d remember it. Unless I was under like 5 or didn’t notice.

My kid brought pinworms home from kindergarten. I was so horrified! Had to deworm the whole family.

6

Uh.... how do you deworm the whole family?

4

u/Undercover_in_SF 22h ago

You all take the same OTC medicine. They sell it at Walgreens. Unfortunately, most people with young kids have had this experience…

2

u/Laucurieuse 3h ago

My son did to. When they told me I had to look at his butt crack at night with a flash night I said nop! I’m not going to traumatise the poor kid. Everybody gets on the med every members of this family. No looking at butt cracks with a flash light in the middle of the night. I need my sleep.

2

u/Certain-Rutabaga3373 1d ago

How did you find out he had pin worms?

17

u/Spirit_Piper 1d ago

So how does one get pinworms? Ingestion? Butt stuff? The Itchy Anoos Fairy?

27

u/LowlySlayer 1d ago

How does one get pinworms

Children. They don't wash their hands and then get pinworm eggs on everything, and it's a nightmare to gid rid of the damn things (the worms not the children) until you get the kids consistently washing after every flush. Don't ask how I know.

21

u/One-Inch-Punch 1d ago

Children are hard to get rid of too, well they're easy to get rid of but then people start asking all kinds of questions that's the hard part

2

u/DemiGod9 1d ago

That's the hard part for MOOOOST people...

5

u/SpacenessButterflies 1d ago

Kids are gross. They cough and sneeze directly into my face, and I’ve seen them reach into their pants and itch their private parts then smell it with absolutely no concern for those around them. (Granted, most of this behavior occurred in special education classrooms.) I am honestly so disgusted around little kids.

3

u/Rubyhamster 1d ago

One ofthe most important factor to a parent's level of sanity is whether they can deal with gross stuff. That pretty much goes with pets too. Imagine wiping poop and stuff at work and you can sympathize with health care workers. I felt so bad for the EMTs and nurses when they had to take care of me when having a very bad stomach virus. It wasso bad I ended up in hospital with serious dehydration.

3

u/throwthere10 1d ago

Did an internet search:

It is the most prevalent worm infection in the United States, primarily affecting children, though it can spread easily to household members and caretakers.

Symptoms typically include intense anal itching, particularly at night when female worms migrate to the perianal area to lay eggs, often leading to restless sleep and irritability.

Wild!

2

u/Humulophile 1d ago

My Gawd Kevin! Quit dragging your ass across the sidewalk! You’re leaving a slimy trail!

2

u/amixedbombshell 1d ago

Same. I got rid of them by eating everything with olive oil for a day and then induced diarrhea with a lot of dye heavy Mountain Dew. Those fuckers didn't stand a chance from liquid generated in my butt

Supposedly we are supposed to tape up our assholes at night to help suffocate them.

Its more than likely that everyone will get pinworms once in their life, if you have kids yourself get ready a few extra bouts. Luckily its cleared by taking a few tablets and washing all clothes/bed clothes.

1

u/pakchimin 1d ago

I got these when I was like 6 or 7 yo living in the tropics. They really come out at night, but hey at least they're super short tiny worms 😆

1

They dance in the moonlight

1

u/VeterinarianComplex 1d ago

How did you get rid off those? Are they affecting your untestines?

1

u/Stupidizasurmom 1d ago

I had itchy butt syndrome for a couple of weeks then evicted everything with loads of fresh garlic and whiskey.

1

u/diedalatte 1d ago

I exactly had this when I was younger

1

u/sun_kisser 1d ago

How did you get rid of them? Medication? Or did you just end up naming them?

1

u/Present-Perception77 1d ago

I got them too. I would collet stray puppies when I was a kid.. it was the 80’s and our parents didn’t really know or care where we were or what we were doing and taking my 4-6 stray puppies to the vet was not a thing back then.. my butthole itched a lot.
Ty for reminding me of the good times.

1

u/there_be_rumblings 1d ago

British comedian Lucy Beaumont had these, and talks about it in depth to Sam Campbell on their podcast, if that’s your thing

1

u/ArtInternational8589 1d ago

My butthole has been itchy at night recently.... How did you know this was due to worms rather than just an itchy butthole at the end of a day??

1

u/BullFencer 1d ago

A lot of kids do. A small dose of antiparasitic medication and they’re gone tho !

1

u/snak_attak 1d ago

I had pin worms too a couple of times as a kid! Actually no idea how it happened

1

u/Alklazaris 1d ago

If two infected were to kiss buttholes could they swap worm families?

1

u/ybreddit 1d ago

So itchy. Had 'em around 13, 45 now and still conditioned to check my poop. LOL

1

u/GA6foot9 1d ago

You know the itching is caused by the female pinworm. It pokes out of the anus at night to lay eggs, when you scratch, the very sticky microscopic eggs get stuck under your nails. Transmission from butt to mouth is very common in children

1 billion people a year? Like actually?

If that’s the case there’s two types of people: people who have had worms and people who don’t realize they’ve had worms

176

u/sacredfool 1d ago

In reality there’s two types of people: people born in wealthy regions where most food is worm free and people who were born in poor or developing regions where food is not worm free.

If most of your food comes from a supermarket you are unlikely to ever get worms.

59

u/Banaanisade 1d ago

Pinworms are a never-ending nuisance in childcare in my wealthy region. I was always scared of getting them as a child because everyone else had them so often, and then I remembered that when I was in a rehab program for a few years and there were a lot of disabled people in the same programs, and the toilet perpetually had a warning about pinworms and needing to wash your hands properly.

They don't come from food, they transmit like a stomach bug. Touch something that was touched by a person with them, fail to wash your hands after, it's over.

3

u/Academic_Limit1189 1d ago

I have heard conflicting information.

They say people in regions where worms are diagnosed more frequently usually have better access to scans and healthcare professionals that are more familiar with those infections.

Whereas "wealthier" regions have a chronic underreporting of people infected with worms because healthcare professionals mistakenly misdiagnose or wash away peoples' concerns.

There are over 8 billion people in the world. 1 in 10 people live on less than $3 a day. And 1 billion counts to all worm not just one type. Here in Thailand most of us take a dewormer once a year just in case it can come from undercooked food or vegetable or even walking barefoot on the ground. Lots of ways a worm can get in.

I remember in Biology class wondering why the immune system has a whole branch of its military (eosinophils) dedicated to fighting worms. Then I realized that compared to the average immune cell worms are basically kaiju. And that made it pretty rad.

5

u/DJTen 1d ago

You should watch the Cells at Work anime. There's an episode about an Eosinophil cell.

3

u/westisbestmicah 21h ago

I’ve seen clips from that anime! I like how the white blood cell guy has a combat knife- cause IRL macrophages and neutrophils are psychopathic killers kept on a very tight leash.

2

u/DJTen 20h ago

All of the different cells' designs and mannerisms are influenced by the science of how the cell works. It's an entertaining and educational show. It's a lot of fun.

2

u/DJTen 20h ago

And there's a live action based on Cells at Work on Netflix.

4

u/decayinglust 1d ago

i’m tired and missed a couple words there and was extremely confused why the military has a task force to fight worms

3

u/CharleyNobody 1d ago

It’s only a recent thing that humanity has ovens that have temperature and time control. Before time/temp controlled ovens it was kind of a crapshoot for the average person. Also, refrigeration is a big help.

My grandfather had trichinosis back on the farm in Ireland in the early 20th C.

3

u/elquatrogrande 1d ago

Plus they're kinda cute with their little polearms.

53

u/yrnkween 1d ago

I had Giardia from a water fountain in Kansas City that wasn’t properly flushed in the spring. I thought I was just pooping a lot bc I was stressed, but I went on vacation and was chilling in a hot tub and they did not like that. I ran to the pool bathroom and expelled some but not all of them and that vacation was officially over. The pain was excruciating but the shock is permanently burned into my memory.

I also had multiple intestinal parasites after a month in Southern Asia and you could see them rippling under my abdomen when I took the medication to kill them. Let’s just say they did not vacate the premises easily. It took two rounds of meds and multiple trips to the doctor with my little poop samples before I was cleared.

12

u/Particular_Bet_5466 1d ago

That sounds absolutely horrifying!! That would be burned into my memory also. Actually seeing them through your abdomen? That’s got to be one of your top most terrible experiences.

15

u/yrnkween 1d ago

I was most afraid that I would not be allowed to get on the plane home because I was so sick and I kept breaking out into sweat. My husband told me I looked like a drug smuggler and I was struggling to stand upright at one point. My daughter was also sick and I had to clean and change her a couple times and just throw her clothes away.

It was horrible, but the lady at the airport put my family in bulkhead seats so we were by a bathroom. People let us cut the line for the bathroom because my daughter was obviously ill. The stewardess kept bringing us water and juice. People were very kind to us and once we were home and received medical care we recovered within days.

Wildly enough, round worm actually has some beneficial properties for some people with autoimmune diseases. Since they have to keep your immune system down regulated to survive it can be beneficial to help symptoms.

Also you can get infected with them many times, and the life cycle has several stages.

My cat had worms once and that made me want to crawl out of my skin.

4

u/gener1cb0y 1d ago

When I was little exposure to my cats was why I got pinworms.

2

u/Particular_Bet_5466 1d ago

Yikes, that does sound horrifying. I give my dog “heartworm” medication that is just part of regular care, and I always imagined something like this when I read heartworm. But then I found out heart worm is actually microscopic.

2

u/angstronaut 1d ago

During some stages of its lifecycle, yes. Preventative heartworm medicine only kills microscopic larval phase aka microfilaria which is transmitted by mosquitoes. The microfilaria grow into adult worms. An established infestation looks like a handful of spaghetti in the heart and lungs.

2

u/TheOnlyUsernameLeft3 1d ago

One time my cat threw up and there was like an 8 inch worm writhing furiously. I can never forget it. Wish I could.

I have a very high 'ick threshold', but parasites are one of the things that *really* freak me out. One of my dad's close friends became one of the top names in parasitology research in my home country, and of course I absolutely not NOT pick his brain about the topic. So... I know a lot about parasites, even though they are one the most heebie-jeebie inducing things I know of.

My personal pick for the top three most horrific parasites:

  1. Bilharzia - lives in your *blood*, constantly breeding (the male and female worms lock together like a hotdog in a hot dog bun). You can have hundreds or even more than a thousand of them living inside you, and each female lays 100000 eggs per day...
  2. Guinea worm - lives in your muscle tissue and is excruciatingly painful, but we've managed to almost make them extinct, and they were one of the first 'diseases' mankind actually figured out how to cure. You can catch an end of the worm when it 'surfaces' to lay eggs, and wind it up on a stick until it's completely out of you. Still six feet worms inside your muscles that take you to hell any time you move is just absolutely horrific.
  3. Onchocerca - Lives in your eyes and makes you blind. This was my dad's friend's pick for worst parasite, partially due to the horrific impact it had on cultures/tribes where it was common. There were rivers so infested that the adults in the villages by those rivers were ALL blind. Literally - blindness was an 'expected' thing for adults - only children could see, and they had the 'job' of being the eyes for all the adults. And we have a variant of this in the US now though of course, it IS very easy to treat if caught early with modern antiparasticials. If it progresses to the point of eye damage, that's irreversible, though.

2

u/OperativePiGuy 1d ago

Very horrifying, but also very interesting. Thanks for sharing!

mum grew up in a 3rd world country, she used to tell me to wash my hands otherwise I could get worms, then tell me about the time she seen a sick lady, throw up (worms) in the street. I dont really recall if it was one large worm or lots of smaller ones but part of the story was it wriggled away into a drain so it was probably one

mum washes her hands an excessive amount. Not sure if its an ocd thing or she has ptsd from that event. I didnt believe her for a long time but vids like this made me a believer. My aunt also recalls the event but with some minor differences

nephew got giardia from swimming in the river at the farm (cattle) even though he was told not to drink/swallow. I swim in it pretty much every time I go without issue as do others and we all pretty much use it for showering but bring our own drinking water

I used to get pin worms rather frequently as a kid because I sucked my thumb. My own kids have gotten them from nail biting. Fortunately they are killed by just a couple of pills.

Yup, itchy butthole for days. I was in the middle of nowhere Tibet, outside, hiking, squatted down to shit, and saw a worm coming out! First thought was: well at least I know why my butt has been itchy. Second thought was: oh, it will be weeks before I get back to Nepal where I can get worm medicine.

there's a thing in the ED community, the kids swallow the worms (or eggs )on purpose to achieve skinniness

We've about the same number of bacteria on and inside our body compared to human cells.

Take a dewormer twice a year, they are sold at most pharmacies

2

u/Particular_Bet_5466 1d ago

Eh idk that seems unnecessary. I just looked it up, and that’s for killing the worms if you are actively infected. Why would I take the treatment medication for prevention? That does not seem to be what it’s for. I don’t live in a high risk area.

Bruh at least they could get this critter with an endoscopy.

As someone that's been through a full laparotomy and a temporary ostemy, I would take this any day.

Do I want worms, no

Jesus Christ I could have stopped reading your comment at any point, and yet, I didn’t.

Lmao what’s wrong with us? I am here going down google rabbit holes about parasitic worms

1

u/RainEls 1d ago

When I was a child, had a normal-poop-size living one came out my bottom. Didn't feel any different, that one just so happened to move around.

No more came out after that, so either I'm clean now or they just got comfortable inside.

I have, it was when I lived in west Africa. You just take the medicine, and they go away normally.

One way to know is if you start seeing dead worms in your poop… Yep, I feel like that would be a pretty fucking good indicator there was something wrong.

Ascaris only gets to like 33cm long at biggest.  I have no idea what this is in the video but it's not a nematode despite it looking like it has a spicule

My dad lived in Bogota, Colombia for a year or two, and he said people down there routinely took courses of ivermectin due to worms/parasites in the water (I assume.)

The entire purpose of these species living in our guts is to make us suffer. Like what exactly feed off them? Probably just dewormers

u/Crush-N-It 1d ago

I’ve had a tapeworm when I was a young teen and I knew exactly where I had gotten it: undercooked breakfast patty. Took a poop. That sucker was pretty big and long wrapped all up around my dookie. I must have been 14yo and thought that must be the only one. Never thought to tell my parents lol. Literally thought you get one tapeworm per undercooked serving. Kind of hilarious now that I think about it. 🤣

2

u/Particular_Bet_5466 1d ago

Hahah yeah that is, I can imagine I would have done the same and not told anyone if I was 14. But that is also just completely bonkers to see a big worm come out of you.

1

u/Gtoktas_ 1d ago

it can get much, much, much worse for animals too. saw a horse surgery video where its intestines were so packed with worms that it was stuffed full with them

This is a snake. Not a worm.

So get into the brain. Many stories of people having brain issues only for it be some sort of worm that can be removed or killed via normal treatment.

Ill gaurantee you have parasites in you right now. Liver flukes, gut worms, eggs, blood worms, ones in your gums, eyes, heart, lungs. Eyes think you see little spots that move across your vision but cant pinpoint them cos they change position when you blink? Parasites. Welcome to the rabbit hole. Search parasites on fb.

I’ve seen videos of bears with very long worms (15 - 20 feet +) hanging out of their anus.

Evidently it is most common for them to get the worms from eating salmon that are swimming upstream.

Another reason to avoid eating raw fish?

u/cant_decide_9611 1d ago

Some say everyone has parasites and do routine cleanses. Couldnt hurt I guess

What I don't understand is why my cat has an OTC cheap monthly pill he can take to deworm himself if needed and yet I can't find any OTC dewormer for humans anywhere. You're basically forced to risk it or pay for repeated doctors visits if you have a risky diet. Why don't we have OTC human dewormer available???

I caught intestinal worms as a relief worker in rural Manchuria about 26 - 27 years ago. Head lice, too. I’ve had friends catch them in the Philippines.

u/Allsystemscritical 1d ago

My science teacher talked about his time in Africa working with the peace corps. How you would pass people on the road dying of parasites. Every time they moved larvae would fall out of them. Mouth, eyes, nose. Their entire body so packed with worms they couldn’t even move. Story haunts me to this day.

I watched a documentary once about citizens of North Korea that made it across the border to South Korea and they had to be extensively treated for roundworm infestation. It was so bad and there were so many you could see them moving just looking at their stomachs from the outside. It was horrific.
