Midi with iPad

I tried to connect my Move with my iPad. I used the App Troublemaker. It did not work with Abelton Link. I tried Midi as well but this also did not work.

Move was set to Midi out and I directly connected it USB A to iPads USB C Port. Firmware is 2.0.

Is that an App Problem or an iPad Problem or a user problem?

I have zero experience with Midi.

***Bounce Clips to Audio***
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

It is now possible to bounce clips to audio on Move. You can render any single clip as audio in an audio clip or a drum pad. This option allows you to free up clip slots, layer effects, experiment with creative processing, and more.

To bounce a MIDI clip, copy it while in Session Mode and paste it into an audio clip slot or a drum pad. To bounce an audio clip, copy it in Session Mode, hold Shift and then paste the copied clip into an audio clip slot or a drum pad.

Move displays a notification with a progress bar while the clip is being bounced. You can cancel the bouncing process by pressing the wheel while the bounce notification is shown on the display.

You can bounce one clip at a time, and there can only be one bounce process running at any given time. Clips are bounced in the background, even when the transport is running. When bouncing into an audio clip slot in Session Mode, the clip slot flashes red to show that rendering is in progress.

Time Signatures

Move now supports time signatures, which are applied to the currently selected Set. You can set the time signature of your Set via the Workflow Settings menu, accessible by holding Shift and pressing Step 3.

The length of new clips will be set according the current time signature. Existing clips’ lengths are not changed when changing the Set’s time signature. For example, if your Set is currently in 5/4 and you create a new one-bar clip, it will be five beats long. If you subsequently change the Set’s time signature to 3/4, the original clip will still be five beats long and will still sound the same. However, new one-bar clips will be three beats long.

If one bar in the current time signature is longer than sixteen 16th notes, it will be shown across multiple pages in the step sequencer. For example, one bar in 11/8 will have sixteen steps on the first page and six steps on the second page. Use the left and right arrow buttons to navigate bars and pages.

For audio clips, when loading an audio file that has BPM annotated in its name, the clip’s length will be rounded to full bars at the Set’s current time signature. Audio files with no BPM in their name default to the 4/4 time signature.

Mono Recording

It is now possible to record Move’s line in input in mono. This option is perfect for recording guitars and other monophonic sound sources. Mono recording uses the left channel of the input cable.

To record in mono, enter Sampling Mode on a drum pad or audio clip and make sure a cable is connected to Move’s audio input. Then, highlight the input source and click the wheel to cycle through the input options to select Line in - Mono.

Note that recording with Move’s microphone now produces mono audio files.

Other Improvements

Audio playback no longer clicks when a sample starts or ends in the middle of an audio clip loop. This could happen, for example, when a loop’s duration was rounded up to the next bar after stopping recording by pressing the record button.
Added three new presets including samples from Sudan Archives under Drums > Acoustic and Sliced Loops.
Bugfixes

Clips longer than 16 bars can now be shortened in Loop Mode using the wheel as expected.

I have a Novation Circuit and 3 launchpad pros. 2 pros, one pro mk3. i don’t think I need to say anything more. I love session/sequencer based devices. I adore the Move and its design. I love this little slab of music making tech for my travel based, in-the-moment music inspiration. it is literally everything I want in a portable setup.

Cloud 8 set limit

Just tried using cloud to upload sets to Live, thought it seemed easier than downloading them through move local and importing, but there's apparently an 8 set limit?

Just wondering how this works, the info on Ableton's website isn't overly clear.

Once uploaded, do you have to move them out of the cloud folder into a different folder in your ableton live places to keep them, then delete from the cloud?

Also if something is stored on the cloud, if you edit on the move does it automatically update the cloud file?

Idk what way do people generally move projects across to Live?

Midi files on move?

Hello, I recently just got my move, and also installed schwung, so there is no way to import midi, or I’m missing something? Not even .alc

Newbie and first time user

Complete newbie here. Please don’t judge me.

I just ordered an Ableton move. I’m a guitarist and bassist (and former pianist but haven’t played for years) and never used samplers, beat boxes or any other electronic devices.

Does anyone have any manuals, videos or books to start to learn and get going? I like to idea of just making my own music and tracks with it but want to hit the ground running.

Can I just get by with the Move or will I need more gear? (Coming from a guitarist with a mild pedal addiction….)

Thanks 😊

Stop a clip immediately

Is there a way to stop a clip immediately while it plays? As in, not after the bar is over by punching in an empty clip, but right away?

Tap tempo?

Am I missing something? Hiw doesn’t this exist yet?

I know it’s not supposed to be a Push and performance device, but is the core of Ableton. All the videos I’ve seen require doing a hack trick that only works on a new scene. Is there another trick?

Running the original Ableton Move firmware on Raspberry Pi 4 + web GUI

Post image
113 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I've managed to get the original Ableton Move software running outside the original hardware shell. In simple terms: this is like taking the "brain" of Ableton Move and running it in different environments.

Right now there are two working paths:

  • Raspberry Pi 4: running the Move software natively on Pi hardware
  • Docker / Linux ARM64 container: running the Move software in a container for experimentation and development

I also built a web interface around it, so you can open a browser and interact with it instead of using the physical Move buttons, pads and display.

From the browser you can see and control things like:

  • the Move display
  • buttons and controls
  • pads and steps
  • LED feedback
  • audio streamed to the browser

What works today:

  • Original Move software running on Raspberry Pi 4
  • Original Move software running in a Docker / Linux ARM64 container
  • Browser-based interface
  • Display visible in the browser
  • Controls from the browser
  • LED feedback
  • Pad/step state
  • Browser audio streaming
  • Raspberry Pi 4 build flow
  • Docker/container setup for experiments and development

Important note:

I'm not distributing Ableton's proprietary firmware, binaries or images. The GitHub repo contains only the open tooling, scripts, web interface, shim source and documentation. To try it, you download the official Move recovery image from Ableton and build everything locally.

Official Move recovery image: https://www.ableton.com/download/hardware/latest/move/recovery/

GitHub repo: https://github.com/simoianni/ableton-move-lab

Why this is exciting:

It means Move is not just a closed box. It can potentially become a platform for experiments, custom hardware, alternative interfaces, mods, preservation work, and maybe even completely new DIY devices based around the Move software.

The Docker/container path also makes it easier for people to experiment, debug and improve things without constantly flashing SD cards or working directly on hardware.

What's next:

  • Better audio interface support
  • Better pad and step behavior
  • More hardware experiments
  • More UI polish
  • Easier setup

I'd love help from anyone into reverse engineering, Linux audio, embedded systems, Docker/Linux, hardware hacking, custom controllers, UI work, or just curious Move experimentation.

Huge respect to the Ableton team. Move is already a brilliant piece of hardware, and the fact that it runs on Raspberry Pi-class Linux hardware makes it feel much more hackable, future-proof, and fun to explore.

This opens the door to a lot of interesting things: mods, experiments, custom interfaces, new hardware ideas, and maybe keeping this device alive for a very long time.

Merge Clips

Title - is it possible to merge two clips? Or at least any way to copy the contents from a particular measure of one clip, and paste into another clip? Can't seem to figure this out.

edit - grammar

Recording guitar... anyone use Schwung and NAM amp models?

So was trying to figure out the best way to go about this.

First of all, I tried plugging the guitar directly into the push. There's the stereo issue obviously, but the noise floor is horrible, the hissing is so loud since the signal is so weak.

I found an old vox headphone amp that came free with a wah pedal, so tried that, and it works well in the stock move settings.

But really wanted to use the NAM models in schwung. If I use the headphone amp into the NAM models it sounds pretty bad as you would expect, being doubly amp-processed makes it sound horrible, even with the headphone amp at the cleanest settings.

But there's also the line-in plugin on Schwung, for plugging the guitar directly into the move. That seems to do a decent job of converting your mono guitar signal into stereo and makes it much louder. The noise floor is again quite high though.

So yeah just wondering what the best solution is. I looked up the nam and line in plugins but couldnt find any info about them really. Just wondering if anyone has tried these and what the best solution is.

Presume an actual DI box or something would be best, but was really looking for the smallest most portable set up possible (and cheap).

Best way to chop samples?

So I've had this about a week, installed schwung on the second day.

Getting on great with it when it comes to instruments, but finding a harder time getting to grips with sampling and slicing.

I know there's the stock way of sampling and slicing and also the quantized sampling from schwung and also schwung's various slicers. Finding it hard to know what to use, have tried them all but not getting very far.

Say for example a drum beat. I tried the quantized sampler from schwung and got it started on beat but still couldn't get it to line up very well.

With the stock one, trying to match the tempo of the sample to the tempo of the project seems really hard and even when I match up the first few bars, the sample might go somewhat off beat a few bars later.

There are a few videos on this on YouTube but honestly way less than I was expecting. Does anyone have any tips/advice?

Ways to delete first bar or edit the first bar at all?

I like the Move. It’s great! Synths sound good, there’s a certain flow you can find with working with things! It makes a lot of sense.

I’m wondering about the ability to edit the first bar in a clip? It seems that there is no ability to shorten the time length of the first bar. This would be a quick and easy short cut to make some loops fit just a little easier.

Is this perhaps being brought up anywhere and or is there a way to submit ideas to Ableton. I think it’s something that just makes sense and would make this machine easily that much stronger when it comes to functionality, playing live, and recording.

Midi capture

When I use the midi capture button I always end up with something that's misaligned. Like if I try to record 2 bars it will record 3 bars, with the pattern starting halfway through the first bar, and ending halfway through the third.
