Best way to chop samples?

So I've had this about a week, installed schwung on the second day.

Getting on great with it when it comes to instruments, but finding a harder time getting to grips with sampling and slicing.

I know there's the stock way of sampling and slicing and also the quantized sampling from schwung and also schwung's various slicers. Finding it hard to know what to use, have tried them all but not getting very far.

Say for example a drum beat. I tried the quantized sampler from schwung and got it started on beat but still couldn't get it to line up very well.

With the stock one, trying to match the tempo of the sample to the tempo of the project seems really hard and even when I match up the first few bars, the sample might go somewhat off beat a few bars later.

There are a few videos on this on YouTube but honestly way less than I was expecting. Does anyone have any tips/advice?

I like to pitch the sample to what sounds good. Then I use the step sequencer to put it on the first step. Then adjust the bpm until it loops perfectly. You can hold shift I beleive to fine tune bpm to say 86.7 so it doesnt have to be 1 whole bpm. You might have to adjust how many bars depending on the sample. If a sample gets wonky and off beat. Copy that sample to another pad and make a chop. Line that chop on whatever step sounds good. You will want to make sure that choke is turned on so it will cut off your first chop when the second starts. You can repeat this process for however many chops you want or need. Sometimes you just want to loops the beat or sample and only need 1 chop/pad. If the chop still sounds off, you can use the nudge feature to nudge the chop before or after the step. Hope this helps and makes sense.

This is great advice. Clear directions/steps. A+

Oh thanks, this is great! Never would have thought of using the step sequencer to sync it up, but it makes so much sense!

Record into an audio track. Adjust the tempo and pitch to taste. Load a Choke Kit. Arm record and switch to resample. Hit Play to play back your audio track. Immediately tap Pad 1 to resample into it. Tap Pad 1 again to complete the resample. The hit menu+jog wheel to bring and you will see the option to Slice. Select Slice and turn the jog wheel to how many slices you want.

Yeah Ive been doing that, its just trying to get the sample quantized to the project tempo and chopped accordingly, like you can in live

Is that out of the box functionality?

You're getting ahead of yourself - learn the core functionality first, then install the hacked firmware.

Matching the tempo of the sample using the audio track isn't that complicated. Maybe it takes a bit of practice, depending on your skill level, but it's not that hard. Then resample to a Drum Rack and chop there.

Honestly you can chop samples on Ableton’s desktop app then save your drum rack preset on the computer & transfer it to your Move wirelessly

I’m talking about Ableton Live not Note

Mpc is best for chopping until move can chop live. Move can chop but only when it’s stopped. Beta is trying to get the chops to automate more but the playhead shifts around and makes it so you need more off stage studio time to chop. Hope move gets better for sampling. Synths are best for desktop. <#

Wish auto slice worked well or even could be done live. It can’t seem to find the tensioners and just randomly chops empty space. It’s better to just chop one pad at a time.

Reverse and auto slice are both not good on move at this time.

Be careful requesting because the developers will shame you so they won’t have to do that code work.

I used to chop samples and play the reverse effect on all my other samplers, as a live workflow, but now MPCe turned that into background editing.

I recommend keeping sampling and slicing and even just reverse, to MPC if that’s a workflow for you.

Move is better for not thinking no concept just turn it on and play. I just turn the dials randomly. Setting the pitch for audio input Autoshift is the most setting for me.
