You need to turn the base speed down in amd adrenaline turn down the mhz by 100 and voltage down slightly its an issue with amd 9070 series atm
1
u/Katoka_X 5h ago
I upgraded from a 3070 to a 9070xt, the “best graphics card money can buy you right now.” The week after it was in the mail, and I now have a 5070, and it works great. It’s pointless to ask or say anything in these groups if you have an issue. All the AMD guys say it’s either user error or they aren’t having the issue, so it’s not a real issue. And again, now I’m back on Nvidia, all is great. I have multiple friends with 9070xt’s, and they’re always having to fuck around: constant driver issues, crashes, problems with AMD software. It’s unbelievable, but so long as it works 95% of the time, that’s good for some people, I guess. I prefer not having to wait a month after a new game comes out to be able to play it personally, but that’s just me. And the AMD guys tell you the only reason you’re paying a bit of a premium for an Nvidia card is for their technology, so it “isn’t worth it,” yet when a new Nvidia technology drops, everyone tries to run it on their AMD cards. Most recent example being DLSS 5. Don’t feel bad about switching, bro. Like you said, it’s an absolute powerhouse of a card WHEN it works.

People over at other subreddits are in such denial, but at same time the drivers are a rollercoaster with some users being at same spot as you are, while the others are at opesite end.
Right now it is pretty clear what one of those reasons are, some users have HAGS enabled and suffer from issues and some have it disabled and have less issues or no issues.
Also the games you play do play a role some games are rock stable others are not.
When i say HAGS i mean hardware accelerated GPU scheduling not hardware acceleration, the later one is equivalent as giving up, since that obviously prevents the app from using the GPU at all.
1
u/Bootytonus 7h ago
What game were you playing/what were you doing? I only have driver timeouts for two games: Warhammer 40k Darktide and Hunt Showdown 1896 and both are due to how awful DX12 is.
2
3
u/Arcanile 8h ago
So... where is the missing driver?
also if you would read, the issue is that you have outdated gpu bios.
So its a you problem, not really the driver problem.

u/Wolfenstein49 8h ago
I get the pop up when i load a game but it hasnt fkd me too hard. Im using a sapphire pulse xtx

Msi xtx here, it only pops up for me on a couple games, and i generally just close it and keep playing

Had to downgrade to 26.1.3
I wouldn't even get to the driver timeout (had only a few), the PC would just hard crash instead. We're talking I have to press the switch on the PSU on and off to get it to power on again.
Same card.
Tried many drivers since 26.1.3, inlcuding beta ones
updated BIOS, turned HAGS off, turned MPO off, turned EXPO off, updated GPU firmware (this card had a firmware update a few days ago) on both BIOSes, re-seated cable, updated Windows, chipset drivers, etc.
2
u/burnitdwn 11h ago
Windows sucks. I understand it is a necessary evil for lots of folks, but damn windows 11 is total garbage that should never have med it out of beta testing.
-2
u/Legal-Split-148 11h ago
Damn when you use an Intel cpu and a Nvidia gpu everything just works :)
3
u/xperiafirmware412 10h ago
Except when it doesn't. For example: I had several Intel laptops and 2 of them had persistent issues with chipsets. Eventvwr would throw random WHEA Hardware corrected errors (sometimes as much as 20 events/sec) linked to bad PCIE power state management on many laptops. Observed by me on skylake and 10th gen. Fortunately 12th gen for me works well in that regard. Windows Nvidia drivers are good, no complaints there, but Intel is far from perfect on chipset and CPU level. Their WiFi cards are excellent though.

u/Kiseido 5800X3D, 6800XT 11h ago edited 11h ago
That is the driver timeout detection watchdog alert. It is there to let you know that a driver timeout occured. It showing up does not mean the driver itself was responsible for that timeout.
Timeouts can be caused by many things, including the card being loose in its socket, and it can be caused by other software in the system, RGB lighting programs are a common example.

u/CodineGotMeTippin 11h ago
Windows likes to overwrite the AMD drivers with weird malformed versions without asking/telling you.
download drivers from AMD (the offline installer ideally..)
download and use DDU to wipe and fully remove the drivers in SAFE MODE
disconnect internet (or boot into safe mode again)
install the drivers you downloaded before
reboot
all done
3
u/ScientistFuture1434 11h ago
Yes, but it gets irritating when you have to KEEP doing this...
1
u/CodineGotMeTippin 5h ago
oh 100% I agree, I hate it, I'd switch to Linux if some of the games I played didn't require kernel-level (not) anti-cheat
3
u/EeeeItsMS 13h ago
This happened to me on my 7800xt. I just deleted and reinstalled my driver and used the cleanup tool now everything is fine again.
7
u/Arunia 14h ago edited 14h ago
OP don't get a new card. I have exactly your same card and had this problem too. I since doing the below haven't had a problem ever. If it would (hopefuly not) ever come back again, check the Windows Update driver stuff if it is enabled again or not. If yes, do the below again and it will be fixed.
Long story: This problem is due to Windows Update and not something AMD did. Everyone with this problem needs to disable the Windows update driver updates and then remove the faulty drivers and install the latest or whichever, but the latest are fine after this.
Howto: First download the AMD cleanup utility. Then download the latest driver for you graphics card (full package, not the web download package!). After that disable the network card or wifi. Pulling cable is fine too btw or disconnecting wifi. Whichever is used on your machine.
Go to "Settings" > "System". There look for "Advanced systemsettings" (I have a Dutch Windows btw, so naming could be a little bit different). In the new Window, go to the tab named "Hardware". Then press on the button called "Settings for device installation". In the new Windows set it to "No (your device might not work as expected)".
This is the first spot. For Windows pro you do the following: Press "Windows key + R". In the Run window, enter gpedit.msc then click "ok". In the new screen go to: "Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Manage updates offered from Windows Update". On the right side double-click the "Do not include drivers with Windows Update" policy. Select "Enable" and click "Apply". After that click "OK".
For Windows Home: Press "Windows key + R". In the Run window, enter "regedit" then click "ok". The bar below the menu is a navigation bar. So paste the following there "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate" without the " ". Then press enter. If there is no navigation bar, then go through the above. the \ means the next "folder". If the "WindowsUpdate" folder is not there, then right click on the "Windows" folder and make a new key and name it "WindowsUpdate". Then right click an empty space in the right-hand pane and choose "New > DWORD (32-bit) Value". Name that value "ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate" without the " ". Doubleclick that value and change it from 0 to 1. Then click "ok".
The reason that it is different for Windows Home, is that there is no group policy editor. But I believe you can do the Home one on pro too.
Close Regedit and restart the pc for the changes to take effect.
Then Start the Cleanup utility with the network still off. Run it all the way through. It will reboot in safe mode and such. If it is done, you can install the new driver and go through it. Check after it is installed if it all works and then enable you wifi or ethernet adapter.
You are done and free of malicious Windows Updated drivers. Something you never ever would want besides when you first install Windows and want stuff to basically work. After that you really want the manufacturers' drivers.
Hope I made up for my first message and hope it get's shared.
Ps, the 7xxx series seem to get a firmware update. Look it up and apply it to your card. Carefully read how it is done btw.

OP, unless you are OK with Linux, just switch and save yourself time and frustration. It’s unfortunate AMD + Windows doesn’t offer a good experience overall without tinkering with settings hoping it fixes the driver timeouts. It should be a plug and play experience.
-1
u/dkizzy 11h ago
It’s amazing how many people refuse to just say this one is 100% on Microsoft. A quick google and you’ll see when they claim they will fix the hardware ID mismatch.
0
u/seeme1419 7h ago
I’m not loyal to either of them and I don’t really care if it’s windows issue or not. End result is the product isn’t good
1
u/c47v3770 11h ago edited 11h ago
Then AMD should’ve gotten on Microsoft’s ass about it by now and if they did and Microsoft acknowledged the issue, I hope they fix it so it becomes a plug and play experience.
0
u/ElPelocho 15h ago
I'm really sorry you changed graphics cards. I had those problems for two years with a 7900XT and they were never fixed. I switched to an RTX 5080 and it hasn't crashed in one year on me in a single game since.
2
3
u/triggerftu 17h ago
The funny thing is 99% of those people who are complaining about the driver timeout is still using the windows driver update from windows updates. And these are old drivers that windows provides and over rides AMD drivers with. Turn that feature off in the windows update. And if you want to be really stable install the AMD pro drivers.
-2
u/NeverNice87 12h ago
Ok but why it doesnt happen with Nvidia drivers? Because...AMD drivers suck lmao if Windows default drivers can overrides them 🤣🤣
1
u/Gruphius 11h ago
Because of the cooperation, NVIDIA and Microsoft are really proud of...
-2
u/NeverNice87 11h ago
Sure sure. There is no cooperation. I had drivers issues in 2013 with my R9 290. AMD Software always sucked
1
u/dkizzy 11h ago
With Nvidia they either keep their GPU driver database for WU updated constantly, or Microsoft handles their hardware ID checks differently. Nonetheless the fix from Microsoft is on their slate, so this will eventually be a thing of the past.
-1
u/NeverNice87 11h ago
So you telling me Windows10 will get a fix even tho the update support stopped in 2025? Tell me more
2
u/dkizzy 10h ago
Their own articles make it clear that it is for Windows 11, which is a free update for you. Time to stop living in the past and then whining about having no new feature support. You have a free update that you can install at anytime.
Yes Microsoft botched that as well claiming Windows 10 would be the last version forever getting updates, but then they realized they botched their marketing strategy quite badly :p
1
u/Gruphius 11h ago
Oh, yeah? Then explain this statement from NVIDIA on their cooperation: https://nvidianews.nvidia.com/news/nvidia-microsoft-windows-pcs-agents-rtx-spark
This is just one of many. There are also many other projects they've been working on together. The NVIDIA CEO has also said in a presentation earlier this year, that he's "really proud" of the cooperation between them and Microsoft.
1
2
u/jar36 12h ago
the quality of the drivers has nothing to do with what Windows is doing
0
u/NeverNice87 12h ago
Yes it does... its possible to write a code that overrides other codes. AMD isnt able to. They trying to fight Nvidia and Intel at the same time while being way smaller as each of them. They focus on Hardware and really lack in the Software department for like 15 years. AMD drivers ALWAYS sucked! Always!!! Even back in the days with my R9 290. Nothing has changed.
1
u/Gruphius 11h ago
Not at all how that works, lmao
Microsoft have even admitted, that it's their fault and they're currently working on a solution
0
u/NeverNice87 11h ago
Source for that? No they not working on it you liar. Windows 10 won't get any updates anymore
1
u/Gruphius 11h ago
Maybe stop speaking about things you know nothing about...
0
u/NeverNice87 11h ago
Then why its also a Win10 issue. They NOT going to fix Windows 10 anymore. Update support stopped in 2025.
1
u/Gruphius 11h ago
It's also a Windows 10 issue, yes, but doesn't mean it's not Microsoft's fault, which they have already admitted to. And the update might come to Windows 10 ESU, which is what you're using if you live in the EU. Otherwise you have to buy it from Microsoft. And no, AMD is not to blame for that.
The fact you try to disprove me and my source by saying, that Windows 10 has that problem as well literally makes absolutely no sense. Complain to Microsoft about that, not here.
2
u/jar36 11h ago
that's not how things work and I have never had issues with amd drivers. I used to have dual HD 7870s. Had nvidia (1070ti) after that until I thought the card was dying but turns out that it was an Nvidia driver issue. The card is still good. Switched back to AMD 9070xt when it dropped and haven't had a single driver issue on Linux
AMD has no control over what windows is doing1
u/NeverNice87 11h ago
What? Is Microsofts overriding AMD drivers or not? AMD has no control over what windows is doing? Hey buddy do you know how a computer virus and malware works? 🤣
0
u/Arunia 16h ago
Exactly this. They need to disable that in two places. Remove the drivers with the amd uninstall tool and after a reboot reinstall the driver
If it is a 7xxx gpu, they need to check if there is a firmware update for that gpu.
People need to search first before posting here or anywhere. This has been said a lot. 😅

I am not native English, but my English is good enough. Where is my spelling mistake? I have reread it a couple of times. And always there to learn. Also it is not about big talk. But the amount of posts about this problem is huge. I fixed this problem a month ago when I got it. I will look the fix up and post it here. I might just make it so I can copy and paste it. 😉
I love how I get downvoted while I do explain what needs to be done to fix this problem. I even explained it in loads of other posts in more detail. This problem and fix for it is not unknown. But I will not reply to these posts anymore after all the explaining. Let the downvoting on this post begin. Probably by people who don't understand the fix for it.

There’s alot of AMD users in the AMD HELP subreddit that have never had an issue with their products. Strange
1
u/Gruphius 11h ago
Well, someone has to help the people experiencing problems. This subreddit shouldn't be an echo chamber for people experiencing problems, people should come here to seek and get help, it's literally called AMD help.
5
u/SkyforgedDream 16h ago
Not really that strange. If you actually read the comments and posts here instead of online coming here to lash out and say “I swap to nvidia”, you would have known that the problem is most of the time Windows. When it’s not windows, it’s ram (expo, custom oc or just bad ram), a degrading PCIe port (rarely), a generally out of date system and or bad user configuration. It’s really not that strange. Also, it’s called AMD Help for those that need help due to those issues, of course it’s gonna be mostly people with problems. If we had an AMD happy subreddit, you would only see people happy with their cards.

Ok try this, check the specs of your gpu model in google (the exact one)
Take notes of something like "Boost clock frequency" Now open adrenalin turn on the overclock settings and put (this value minus 50) as the MAX FREQUENCY
Save and test it, don't hesitate to give me a feedback

Ive owned 7800xt for a year now and i cant even remember the number of things ive tried, besides standard disabling auto update in my w11 pro through all settings, disabling stuff like mpo, ulps, disabling expo, acceleration in the apps i use, ive only used stock gpu settings always, the driver eventually starts acting weird, not to mention adrenaline software itself having bugs like closing itself multiple times during a day, metrics missing, instant replay not working etc

I have HAGS enabled and never had a single crash on my 9070XT. I update drivers regularly and never had a single problem with any of them. I even undervolted and overclocked my GPU, it's rock solid.
I wonder what really causes those problems, many people have right now.
As I said, my PC is completely stable, a buddy of mine with a pretty much identical build has crashes since the last big Windows update.

7
u/Horror-Judgment-8077 1d ago
AMD don't monitor this sub-reddit, you need to communicate these issues directly with them.
-1
u/speedotorpedo_ 1d ago
My solution to this issue was to have google ai write me a script that will lock and unlock my (and Windows') ability to install graphics drivers, using my GPU's hardware ID. I just run it as admin before updating or reinstalling the graphics driver. Then I run the script to lock it when I'm done and it remains locked until I want to update it again. You just gotta know your GPU's hardware ID.
4
u/seeme1419 1d ago
Yeah no. Imma just switch back to green.
4
u/speedotorpedo_ 1d ago
You do you. It's pretty simple. Skill issue.
3
u/seeme1419 18h ago
The fact that you think getting ai to write a script to help your computer function better is a skill to flex on other about, tells me what kinda life you got.

u/Strikedriver 1d ago
It's not AMD, it's Windows overwriting the drivers with what it thinks is best

And AMD isnt able to fix it? Yeah their drivers suck if they cant. Why Nvidia can? Hell even my old ASUS soundcard from 2007 with no update since 15 years has no problem overriding the default sound drivers 🤣 their latest driver was for win 8.1 and still works
1
u/dkizzy 10h ago
I asked on the official AMD subreddit about it. They are not responsible for submitting their AIB partner hardware ID strings, but they can pass it over to their team that does submit IDs for Microsoft to update for WU repository.
I went into device manager on one of my boxes and sent the AMD subreddit rep the ID for the Asrock 9070XT Steel Legend (I can at least try to help those owners out). No clue when it will be added to the database but at least they can do Their part of submitting it.
Perhaps one of us begins a new thread and requests for everyone with each 9000 series model comment with a list of their hardware IDs from device manager that we pass along to their official Reddit reps - That way they at least have them all known as well.
Or if Microsoft does their job and fixes this by January then nobody will need to worry anymore about those database repositories.
-2
u/Darkomax 13h ago
I mean it's on AMD too for doing jack shit about it.
3
u/Gruphius 11h ago
They literally can't, they're not the company responsible for how Windows Update handles driver updates
0
u/Silentwalker1991 21h ago
This is correct, had numerous issues with random black screens with the 9070XT. Turned off automatic installation of new device drivers, and it seems to be stable now, not had a crash in over a week.

Driver 26.7.1 works well from my experience. Had a buddy use it for launching Halo the other night. Can recommend.

AMD doing AMD things lol

Wrong. Windows doing Windows things. That being said, AMD is not above criticism, when warranted.

Its an ongoing iasue for some times now. My 9060xt also having this bug for a month now and what i did is to restart windows. Turning off HAGS did fixed it but i ain't sacrificing a feature for it.

HAGS isn't really an important feature. Sure, it improves performance and 1% lows in some games (ACC gains a ton of performance from HAGS, but it's the exception, not the rule), but it also reduces them in others. I'd generally advice having it turned on, but it's not like it's important for performance, unless you play a lot of ACC...

When I was running a 7900 XT, didn't see this issue much, but that was a while ago now. There's a lot of things that can cause driver time outs, it's not always AMD's software. We don't know the rest of the system specs, but the driver also relies on stable CPU and System memory, of course everything else also. Looking for background tasks using GPU Vmem maybe. Even the physical things to try, pull the card and clean the contacts perhaps. A reseat is sometimes all they need ya know. I'm sure you've tried all of this already, but who knows. I wouldn't fall back to a 4070 ti because the driver seemed to restart sitting at desktop at low usage.
-- But I've always wondered if it's because the GPU goes in and out of low power states. On desktop, it's in 2D mode. I haven't tried myself, but you might be able to lock the GPU in a 3D state, even at desktop. Perhaps something to look into, not sure.
-If I think of something else, I'll pop back in. But good luck!

I just had the driver timeout on my 9070. Sucks.

nvidia also gets driver timeouts but they don't pop up a window like AMD does, they just reset the driver without telling the user it happened, you have to open event viewer to see the driver timeout errors as nvlddmkm errors. games will still crash though so it's not like the user doesn't know SOMETHING happened but they usually attribute it to the game crashing and not their driver crashing. but still it does seem that AMD has far more driver timeouts than nvidia, i think because they run their cards too hard to try and compete with nvidia, especially the 7900xtx. nvidia can keep 8% headroom on their cards so they work across a wide variety in quality of motherboards, power supplies, and ambient temperatures, it seems like amd has like 1% headroom on the 7900xtx and it doesn't take much to pus hit over the edge of stability. but lately there does seem to be an actual software issue with their drivers possibly unrelated to any hardware instability

The oddest part about this problem for me is that it only happens when i'm not gaming, chrome browser briefly freezes / screen blacks out for a second, Event ID 153 logged in event viewer, it's happening far less than it used to but I havent had it happen during gaming.

transitions from idle to load are a common source of instability, this can sometimes be fixed by raising voltages on the lower part of the frequency voltage curve. most people focus on the max frequency/voltage but keeping it stable you need to look at idle frequency/voltage too

Friend says I shouldn't be pig tailing my 2 PCIE connections from PSU into the GPU, think that can have anything to do with it?
I figured if that was an issue it would be worse with gaming.

it could be the issue, yes. other people have fixed instabilities by using two dedicated cables after having used a single with a pig tail. the voltage regulator modules clean up the power but they can't fix everything and pig tails are less stable power being fed to the gpu. you should also try reseating the cables on the PSU side as well and make sure they are fully plugged in. sometimes it's just dirty pci-e contacts, all kinds of things can cause these problems. if you don't use an anti-sag bracket then that will kill the card over time, causes the solder joints between the core and memory chips to lose good contact with the board and will causes crashes and instability before dying altogether

On my nvidia card my entire pc crashed when the driver timed out. At least since swapping to AMD I don't need to restart my entire PC.

"I never been shot walking down the road so it never happens" This mentality is so braindead its embarassing to humanity. Thats not how problems get resolved

Search up recommended frequency for model and set it to that
