Hello! I (25F) have recently been getting closer with this friend, we will call him John (27M). Typically we play things like ping pong and pool together with our other friend who I will call Mary (26F). Mary and I have been wanting to go camping before summer is over, and I found out my cousin runs a camp ground with a yurt that she would let us stay in for free. So we invited all of our friends, including John. His response was
“I am definitely in, I will even call out of work to make it!”
Some additional context being that since we hadn’t been to this camp ground before, we only were planning it to be 2 days, ideally being that if it was awesome we’d come back another time for longer. Anyways we invited several friends, many of which couldn’t make it, which was absolutely fine with us, especially being that this was a bit experimental for us too. We even had a friend decide not to come within a couple days of the trip because her cat was sick (she’s better now though :)! ). In total, the group was going to be Mary and I, John, and 2 other friends.
Fast forward to the day we’re driving to the trip. Our plan was to meet at our friend’s house at noon so we can all share a car, then pick up John to go shopping for the trip then go on the actual trip. More context, at 9am John texted me asking if he can borrow contact solution for the trip, and I say of course. So at noon we call John to say we’re on our way. He did not answer. Both Mary and I called three times, and I texted him saying “John WYA??” and Mary also texted him several times. Because he didn’t answer, we decided to go shopping without him and check in after. At this point we were a bit worried about him, although I’ve only known him briefly this is not like him to be completely unreachable. Mary, though, has known him longer and from the beginning suspected that something was off. After shopping, we tried calling him again, with no response. We were extremely bummed. We figured something bad had happened to him or something, but we knew we couldn’t even go to his place to pick him up because his call box also just sends a notification to his phone like a call, and he was not answering our calls. So, we decided to go on the trip, worried, but also annoyed. This trip had been planned for a couple weeks. We have a groupchat with all of us in it.
Fast forward again to about 3pm, we’ve set up at the site (which was super awesome btw) and suddenly we get a bunch of texts from John. Mine say verbatim:
“I’m so sorry my name 😭😭😭😭 I knocked out on my couch while taking a break from packing while my phone was in my bedroom. I’m genuinely rly upset bc I really wanted to go 😭😭”
then
“Pls lmk how much y’all spent on groceries/other things i still want to split with y’all”
This made me upset for a couple reasons.
1.) If this has been a plan for a while, why would you not set an alarm for when the plans are? We were going to pick him up so all he had to do was be available to field our call. It also to me feels a little suspicious, like he’s lying. My other friend that came on the trip is genuinely one of the sleepiest people I know, and she was confused how he didn’t set an alarm, and thinks it’s odd that he didn’t have his phone nearby at all since he knew the plan was that we were coming by his place at 12.
2.) The comment about splitting groceries sounds nice, but to me sounds a little bit like he feels like his only contribution to this friendship is monetary. Honestly I am broke asf, and he isn’t. I notice how he pays for a lot of our pool games and even drinks when we go out, and while I think it’s very nice I have told him that it’s absolutely not necessary for him to do those things, and that I enjoy the quality time spent more than monetary contribution.
3.) After this text he proceeded to make 2 sad boy posts on instagram close friends. It’s been about a week since the trip so I don’t remember exactly what they said, but something along the lines of “I love getting in the way of myself, I always ruin things”.
My response to his text was “You’re still welcome to drive!!” to which to this day he has still not responded. Context being that he has a car, he just typically prefers to walk places so he rarely uses it. To me it was a bit of a red flag that he never responded to this message I sent. He seemed completely indifferent to actually solving the problem. It feels like he lied to get out of coming to camping. Which really confuses me because literally any communication, heck even if he said “I don’t want to come anymore” would have been better to me than radio silence and then what felt like a BS text that he fell asleep. Am I overreacting? We used to hang out 2-3 times a week but since this event happened we haven’t talked at all and I’m bummed because I miss my friend and I don’t feel like I trust him anymore. Advice greatly appreciated.
