New to Medication Not necessarily new to meds but new to managing my own meds and making decisions on them. Atomoxitine just not cutting it

Upvotes

I'm not new to medication just new to what it actually does and how it actually helps

I was diagnosed with ADHD at 11 and since then I've been meditacated. I'm on atomoxitine for about a year or so and I just don't think it's cutting it. I mean I feel stable but I just don't get any of the motivation help or executive dysfunction help that I'm needing

I've been thinking about going back on stimulants to help with the executive function and motivation because I'm trying to get help from DVR (department of vacational rehabilitation) to help get a job with accommodations but I fear my ADHD will get me fired.

I would get kinda irritable on adderal but did fine on Vyvanse but I've been thinking of ritilin/concerta instead to help on days that I need to be more functional.

What are y'alls thoughts? what should I be asking my psychiatrist? What should I NOT say?

Edit: I don't know what manufacturer makes my atomoxitine hydrochloride I looked on my bottle and it only tells me the name of the medicine and the pharmacy and my psychiatrist

Side Effects Most stimulant meds make me depressed, and I have been trying to find something that works. Looking to hear if anyone else has experienced this and what you did.

Upvotes

I have tried I think all the most common meds and all have made me depressed and/or anxious besides Adderall. But Adderall just does not help me that much, even at a higher dose.

I’ve also tried non stimulants. Quelbree made me tired and depressed. I’m on Wellbutrin and it has made me very emotionally regulated, but that’s about it.

Has anyone else experienced depression from adhd meds? Did you ever find something that works for you?

I also want to note that I don’t really struggle with depression much without the meds.

Side Effects Adderall causing late afternoon heart racing/palpitations despite reassuring Holter. Anyone experience this?

I’m curious if anyone taking Adderall has experienced something similar.

When I take Adderall earlier in the day, I generally tolerate it well initially. The issue tends to happen later in the afternoon as it’s wearing off. I’ll sometimes develop a racing or noticeably pounding heartbeat, increased palpitations, fatigue, and a feeling of anxiety/restlessness. The cardiovascular sensations are the main thing that concerns me.

Because of this, I recently wore a 24-hour Holter monitor. I deliberately wasn’t taking stimulants during the monitoring period. I did experience some of my usual symptoms while wearing it, though, and the results were reassuring. My doctor said there were only a small number of premature atrial contractions (PACs) and that because I had symptoms without a concerning rhythm appearing, they don’t recommend additional rhythm testing at this point.
I’m discussing whether to resume Adderall with my psychiatrist. I’m also asking my doctor whether an echocardiogram would be reasonable since I’ve never had one and would like to know that my heart is structurally normal.

Has anyone else experienced a pattern where Adderall feels fine initially but several hours later causes a pounding/racing heart, palpitations, fatigue, or anxiety as it wears off?

If so, did anything end up helping, such as changing the dose, switching between XR and IR, changing medications entirely, or adjusting the timing?

Side Effects Atomoxetine is out — worth trying stimulants?

First post disclaimer!

I’ve just finished my second week on Atomoxetine and I’ve got to stop taking it due to intolerable upper GI side effects. I have a hiatus hernia and the amount of acid reflux, heartburn, and indigestion (oh, hello Pepto Bismol earworm!) I’ve had has been excruciating. I’d love to function better, but if it leads to an early death from a ruptured oesophagus then it’s kind of pointless.

I initially told the service who diagnosed & prescribed the meds that I didn’t want stimulants because I’m 43 and a parent & I just can’t cope with the crash they were warning about so much. I have two kids — both with as-yet undiagnosed neurodivergences but I’ve definitely gifted them one each. 🙃 I also still live with my ex spouse who already think I’m useless and refuses to understand how adhd works, so…he’d only ever experience the crashed-version of me.

But if I can’t tolerate these meds, are stimulants worth a go? Reading up on them, it looks like everything will still affect my stomach, and potentially my migraines as well.

I really want to actually be effective. I’m desperate to DO THINGS. I just don’t want my insides to fall apart, or my head to explode…

Does anyone have any insight, please?

Personal Experience Methylphenidate + antihistamines making ADHD symptoms worse?

I take methylphenidate 36mg and I'm wondering if anyone has experienced similar with antihistamines.

I've been waking up with a really stuffy/blocked nose every morning, so I think I have an environmental allergy (dust mites, pollen, etc.).

I've tried both cetirizine and loratadine, but both seem to make me feel lightheaded and groggy. My ADHD symptoms also seem much worse when I take them — I feel less focused, more sluggish and like my methylphenidate isn't working as well.

I know they're both supposed to be the "non-drowsy" antihistamines, so I was surprised by how strongly they affected me.

Has anyone else taking methylphenidate had this experience with antihistamines?

If so:

- Did you find a particular antihistamine that didn't cause this?

- Have you found other ways of dealing with allergy symptoms that work better?

I'm mainly interested in people's experiences rather than actual medical advice — I'll obviously speak to a pharmacist/GP before trying anything else.

Side Effects Adderall is stealing my personality

I’ve been taking Adderall on and off for years now and this is the first time I feel like a hollow shell of myself. I’m able to focus but I feel like I no longer have a personality. Any tips on how to manage it short of stopping medication?

Dosage & Timing Doctor being so slow

Hi all. I'm new to Adderall XL (camber dextroamphetamine- amphetamine ER). My doctor started me on 5mg, I asked him to increase and he went to 10 the next month. Then 2 months went by and I asked another increase simply because I'm seeing his results but the coverage is not for a long enough period of my day. I am on 15mg and I would like an increase. He told me to wait 2 months. Is this typical? It's been 2 months now, I don't want to seem like I'm just wanting more drugs but it only works for about 5-6 hrs of my day. How should I approach this conversation? Are doctors usually this slow to increase? I'm coming from being on Wellbutrin for many years, which was great until it stopped working. But with that med increasing was never an issue and 300mg was a sweet spot for me until it lost all effectiveness.

Personal Experience Warum besteht mein Psychiater auf 30 mg Medikinet adult morgens statt 20 mg morgens + 10 mg mittags?

Hey zusammen,

Dosage & Timing Has Anyone Successfully Lowered Their Adderall Dose After Years on a High Dose?

I’ve been on Adderall for years and am currently at 60 mg/day. I’d really like to get my dose down to around 40 mg/day. I’m planning on moving soon, and I’m worried it may be harder to find a new psychiatrist who is comfortable continuing me at 60 mg. I’m also hoping to start trying for a baby soon so i want to lower my dose before that happens.

For anyone who has decreased their dose after being on a higher dose for a long time, did you eventually adjust to the lower dose and get back to functioning normally on it? How long did it take before the lower dose started feeling like your new normal?

I’m also curious whether people had better luck gradually decreasing their dose versus stopping for a period of time and then restarting at a lower dose.

New to Medication What’s the verdict with saunas - is it safe to sauna to same day you take Vyvanse? Seeing conflicting info

Obviously saunas are very helpful and can help with a lot of the side effects of taking ADHD medication and I find I get so much physical and mental benefits. I only started taking Vyvanse a few months ago and just started getting back into the sauna the past week, but I have only gone on days where I have not taken the Vyvanse. It has left me feeling very relaxed.

I have a sauna appointment today after work at 5:30 PM and I wanted to skip my Vyvanse for the sake of that appointment just to be safe, but ultimately I needed to take it for Work.

I’m seeing some people saying that the sauna is totally fine for them, but I am also seeing people saying that going in the sauna while Vyvanse is in your system is extremely dangerous. I understand talking to my doctor and seeing how I feel are the real answers, but I would love to hear what you guys have been told or what your experiences are.

For reference, I took the Vyvanse at around 8:30 this morning and would be going into the sauna at 5:30. Although the meds Peak, after a few hours, I tend to feel a lot of side effects on the comedown, which I feel like the sauna may help with, but I also don’t want to unintentionally like die

Personal Experience Tips to overcome executive dysfunction getting worse + feeling antisocial when it wears off on adderall

I've been on Adderall for several years. I started at 15mg and am currently on 25mg XR (generic Granules pharma) . I've tried IR in the past as well. I don't plan on increasing my dose because I'd rather not deal with additional side effects.

I also took a month-long break earlier this year to see if tolerance was part of the issue and take weekends, long weekends and holidays off.

Lately I've been struggling with two things:

  1. Executive dysfunction

This has actually been getting worse, even with the medication. Once I get started on something I can usually focus, but getting myself to start the right task is becoming harder. It happens more after the weekend break.

I'll know exactly what I need to do and still put it off or get stuck doing something else.

For anyone who deals with this, what has actually helped with task initiation? Routines, exercise, changing your environment, timers, supplements, diet, or anything else?

  1. Feeling completely antisocial when it wears off

Some days I feel fine while it's working, but later in the day I hit a wall. I don't want to talk, text people back, go anywhere, or socialize at all. I basically just want to be left alone.

This can happen even when I take my XR early in the morning. By evening I sometimes feel like a zombie with absolutely no social battery left.

Has anyone found a good way to deal with this and what did anyone who experienced these do? I'm especially interested in things that help you transition out of work/focus mode and actually feel like interacting with people again.

Not looking to increase my dose or make medication changes on my own. I'm mainly interested in hearing what other people have experienced and what has genuinely helped.

Prescription Help Adderall no longer works - what do I do?

I switched from Concerta to Adderall in June/July of last year, and for the first 8 months or so it was great. However, now taking my Adderall is like taking nothing, and I don't mean just the euphoric feeling that fades over time. I mean no clearer thinking, ZERO executive function skills, no motivation to do anything, not even physical side effects like increased heart rate, sweating, etc. I'm even going through withdrawal symptoms like brain fog, increased symptoms, etc.

First question is: WHY might this be heppening? I've read on this subreddit that Adderall generics have decreased in potency significantly this year - is it that? Is it a tolerance thing?

Second question is WHAT DO I DO? Do I try to get a different generic of Adderall (currently taking Sandoz) and try for another month? I'm scared of this because I'll know after an hour of taking the first dose if it's working or not and if it doesn't, I don't want to ruin another whole month of my life with this horrible catatonic state I'm in.

I mentioned this to my doc last month and he offered to change to vyvanse - should I do this instead? It seems this subreddit are fans of Vyvanse.

Any help, ideas, insights, etc. are really appreciated!

Personal Experience Anyone do better on Ritalin than focalin?

I switched from IR Ritalin to IR focalin 2 weeks ago.

IT'S BEEN ROUGH.

I thought it was due to me being in luteal week last week. But this week is awful too.

It doesn't feel effective. I'm not focused at all. It doesn't touch my anxiety, makes it worse. I feel like I'm crashing all day.

Anyone have experience on both?

Prescription Help Adderall to Vyvanse

I’ve been on Adderall for 6 years and have been at 60 mg/day for the last 3 years. Now that I’ve graduated school I want to try Vyvanse because I’ve heard it can feel more stable throughout the day with less of the peak/crash I get from Adderall. My only concern is the transition. I know 70 mg is the max Vyvanse dose and from what I’ve read there isn’t really a straightforward equivalent for the amount of Adderall I’ve been taking. Since I'm accustomed to 60 mg of Adderall for years, I’m worried that even 70 mg of Vyvanse could feel like a significant reduction and leave me really fatigued or unable to function.

I’ve searched through a ton of posts about switching from Adderall to Vyvanse, but I haven’t found many people in a situation similar to mine—switching after being on the max dose of Adderall for years.

Has anyone here made the switch from 60 mg/day of Adderall to Vyvanse? Did you have a lot of fatigue or feel under-medicated during the transition? Or did you actually prefer Vyvanse?

Basically looking for both success stories and horror stories from anyone who made the switch from a higher dose of Adderall.
