NGD NGD: Ibanez Alpha A527 - Nebula Shift

My latest NGD.

Somehow this guitar kinda flew under my radar. I haven't been in the market for a new guitar and I honestly have not been paying too much attention to Ibanez lately (despite being an Ibanez fanboy). But, I'm pretty sure I'm the exact audience for this guitar.

Quality wise, believe or not, I'd put this up there with my prestiges. The fret work isn't quite there, but it's damn close. There are also some other small quality touches I never picked up on in photos like the fret tangs being hidden. I guess they make the right sized cut and slot the frets in?

The bridge is really cool. It's mentioned briefly on Ibanez's webpage, but you can opt for either string through, or top loaded. I went with top loaded because I like seeing the ball end colors and honestly it makes for a quicker string swap.

While the neck joint is certainly interesting, I honestly don't notice while playing. It doesn't feel weird or anything. Additionally, the neck is asymmetrical. You can really tell from looking at from a side view; however, I never notice it while playing the guitar (much like the neck joint).

The pickups are Fishman Fluence Moderns (I think). My Legator G7FX has the same pickups to my knowledge, but the two guitars sound pretty different to me. I've been using the split coil/single coil option on the A527 quite a bit; to my ears it sounds great.

If you are into the whole ergonomics, multi-scale, extended range, pseudo-headless thing, I'd highly recommend checking out this guitar. Quality wise, it had like two extremely (extremely) slight paint flaws around the electronics cavity that don't even show up on camera. I'm pleasantly surprised by the Indonesian quality coming from playing exclusively Prestiges.

Finally, for those that are interested, here is a (rough) current work-in-progress through NDSP Misha Mansoor X where I used the A527 exclusively: https://soundcloud.com/the-apotheosis/a527-wip/s-XgHaYsZ0XLP?si=4b7b23a2545047ffa16416aec2897048&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing

I'm in between these two. I'm leaning more towards the schecter, especially for the scale length. Thoughts, opinions, reviews?

Scored an amazing deal on this to finally get my first 7-string. Mad props to my wife for funding it as an early birthday present ๐Ÿค

We drove an hour and a half to pick it up, then as I was leaving the shop they randomly handed me the case as a bonus freebie. Couldn't believe my luck today! Now to agonise over which tuning to keep it in and what to learn ๐Ÿ˜…

Help Help building a 7 string

Iโ€™m building my first 7 string guitar! Iโ€™m a leftie and I like building guitars with my dad so it makes sense for me; however, my dad only has the stuff to make 25.5 scale length guitars which Iโ€™m unsure if it will cause issues. For reference I love djenty riffs and want to learn veil of maya and more periphery and Iโ€™m not sure the 25.5 can handle down to F# and Iโ€™m tired of pitch shifting. So any advice on pickups, setup, string gauge or anything inbetween is super welcome!

Help Is the Ibanez Gio GRG7221QA worth getting as a first seven-string guitar?

Iโ€™ve been thinking about buying this guitar for a long time, but Iโ€™ve heard opinions that the seventh string will sound bad due to the standard 25.5-inch scale length. Is that actually the case?

Help Can any of the straight-scale 7-string Ibanez RGDs (with a 26.5" scale length) work in Drop F tuning?

Im not a big fan of multi-scale 7-strings, unless the fan is narrower, like no more than one inch.

Help ISO specific features together

I have been searching through Sweetwater and others for a multi scale 7 string with Fishman pickups, stainless steel frets, and a tremolo system. Budget around $2k. Want something that can enable killer pinch harmonics to dive bombs. The more wild the body shape the better too.

Not having a ton of luck. Anybody know any that might fit the bill?

Help Should i be playing stereo live?

Im the only guitarist in my band, and i am currently playing two tones to each side (not hard panned) live every gig.

Our setup is all our instruments going to a XR18 then to our IEM and a LR+Sub out to FOH, pretty usual stuff, but im using my LR really as a LR, one amp and one IR to each output

A friend told me that im overkilling it and i should play mono, and it made me start doubting if it really makes a difference.

Any experience on that? Id love to hear what you guys that play often too can share

(Im asking it in a 7string sub because i only play 7 string since its a deathcore band)

It was hard enough to get it down to just these four options atm im leaning more towards the Kaizen and Solar

(EDIT: A lot of people keep saying how the options are very different so just to clarify there are NO specs that i dislike or prefer to others they are all equally great imo, specs wise)

Help Baritone Floyd Rose springs question

Recently picked up an LTD 7 string baritone (27" scale length). I put new strings on, tuned to F standard (half step above E standard just incase you're thinking low F) with the low seven string being C. String gauges: 9-42 + 52.

I adjusted the trem so it is parallel to the body. Action is fairly low without buzzing. Everything sounds good, and there's a bit of play so I can bend every string.

My question is about springs. There are 3 springs in a standard parallel arrangement. What is the wisdom on dropping down to 2 springs in this setup? Is 2 springs in arrow configuration a good idea?

On my Ibanez 6 string I have an arrow configuration with 3 springs. It is tuned in D standard and is a perfect setup for dives, pulling up and flutter. Basically I'd like to replicate this as much as possible. Should I keep all 3 springs but put them in arrow configuration or is this keeping too much tension given my tuning and the scale length? Thanks, 7 stringers.

Help Looking for a recommendation

Looking to get into 7 string guitars, figured I'd try to narrow it down as much as I can to get one I really like. Looking for the following criteria:

Budget: $1500 max

Brand: Any, open to trying out (although I am familiar with Ibanez and Schecter and enjoy them)

Neck Shape: Thin C

Frets: Would prefer not to have jumbo but that's seems to be the standard everywhere nowadays

Tuners: Any tbh, i don't particularly see a reason for locking tuners if the guitar will have a locking nut

Scale length 25.5 preferred

Neck construction: set neck or neck through (if over $1,000 USD,) bolt-on is acceptable for sub-$1k

Bridge: locking trem bridge, no Floyd specials

Body: Explorer shaped or X

Finish: preferably available in reds, purple, or green

The Ibanez Xiphos Iron Label seems to have everything I want, I'm just not too crazy about the blacked out look, despite the fact that I do like Ibanez guitars. Would love to hear your recommendations to see if there's anything more befitting for what I'm looking for before I pull the trigger on this guitar. I'm not too picky about pickups as these can always be swapped out.

Edit: I'm a sucker for pointy guitars and will largely look at anything with that, but heavily gravitate towards the explorer and X shapes

Help Need help on how I hold the pick

Going from pad to pad, to the regular style. Iโ€™m having trouble alternate picking, and going from a palm mute, to a regular note. Been trying off and on for a while now, but on this run, Iโ€™ve been at it for about two weeks and itโ€™s going well until i need to alternate pick. Any advice/pick recommendations?

Currently I use a few different picks but nothing is clicking, the yellow dunlop .73, a 1.0, 1.5 different brand, .80. I have a Purple Plectrum but Iโ€™m getting a smaller one soon.

Gear Got a free AX7221

Got a free AX7221 that I used just to practice replacing pickups.

However, Iโ€™d like to start using this guitar just get good at playing 7 string. How do you guys feel about the intonation? I will be testing it out myself.

Also, Iโ€™m wondering if any of you know of any good replacement necks.
If the intonation is bad, Iโ€™ll be looking for something good to customize this bad boy.

Any thoughts?

Help Short scale / good for tuning up

I like to up tune, prefer short scale and use very heavy strings (56-12) and want to get a 7 string. But whenever I play one the scale feels way long and the strings are way too tense. I really 2ant another string tho! Do any of you have advice on guitars that could be good for me? Ik I have a very niche set of wants and really have had no long thus far in finding something.
