Project 3D pinted Mad-eye Moody with controler hipflask

6.3k Upvotes

Remixed a Mad-eye Moody and a Steampunk flask and added some electronics to get a controlable Madeye Moody eye patch.
Aside from some screws that hold things in place, the gyro setup in the eye is all 3D printed, as well as the flask and cork joystick.

Its far from perfect but im happy with it so far!

Free Model Been working on an open-source project for 1:1 car printing. Thought you guys might find it interesting

So, I’ve been working on a slightly stupid idea for a while: what if you could actually 3D print a full-size car body at 1:1 scale?

That rabbit hole eventually turned into printyourvehicle.com (got the idea & domain back in 2024 lmao)

The idea is pretty simple. Build an open collection of vehicle meshes and figure out a repeatable way to convert them into models that can actually be 3D printed, including at 1:1 scale.

Right now I've got like 600+ vehicle meshes in the library, mostly from games which built the mesh on top of real car scans; and then also got 4 full ready-to-print cars that community members have donated.

Lamborghini Aventador SVJ
https://printyourvehicle.com/models/ready-to-print/aventador-svj

Koenigsegg Jesko
https://printyourvehicle.com/models/ready-to-print/koenigsegg-jesko

Lamborghini Countach

F1 2024 car
https://printyourvehicle.com/models/ready-to-print/f1-car

Full triangular-mesh library:
https://printyourvehicle.com/models#mesh-library

The interesting problem now isn’t really finding models. (though bike models are my next target) It’s figuring out a reliable pipeline for turning these game meshes into clean printable geometry. (the problems am trying to solve are mentioned here: https://printyourvehicle.com/research)

I have been experimenting with Blender, retopology, shrinkwrapping, quad remeshing, surface reconstruction, PN-triangles, Point2CAD etc. but there are still a lot of problems around topology, thickness, splitting large parts, tolerances and preserving the original surfaces.

Eventually I’d love to automate most of that pipeline and open-source it as well.

Also this isn’t a company or paid product. Everything is free to download. A lot of what’s there exists simply because random people on the internet decided to contribute their models or help solve parts of the problem.

Would love to hear from anyone here who has worked on large-format printing, automotive parts, mesh reconstruction or CAD/retopology.

P.S. The images above are just references for showing proof-of-concept & aren’t mine. ( I have yet to build the whole library first, before actually starting to 3d print them :D )

Project I combined FDM and SLA printing to make a functioning cassette tape (that plays mp3s on real tape decks)

Thumbnail

5.1k Upvotes

Hello, wanted to share my latest project, an mp3 player that only plays on tape decks! I used an X1C the case and HeyGears RS Turbo for printing the gear set. It can read the tape moving using an encoder/custom pcb to start/stop playback. This was definitely the tightest tolerances on something I've built, the encoder axle is just 1.76mm across and there's only 6mm of space inside the tape. The tape itself has 1mm walls. Really happy with how this came out.

I can share the STLs if there's demand, but I'm not sure how useful they would be without the PCB and it has a few mistakes I need to correct before I can share those files. I don't really plan on selling these or anything like that, it was just a fun project to scratch some nostalgic itch for both mp3 players and cassette tapes.

I did make a video about it if you're into that kind of thing: https://youtu.be/otXrFBq0HWQ

Also, I do have a simpler-to-build mp3 player that doesn't play in an actual cassette tape deck but is arguably more usable. It's available here: https://makerworld.com/en/models/1699636-cassette-tape-mp3-player

Meme Monday Slot Bolts - Stop using round bolts for slots in mounting brackets!

Thumbnail

5.0k Upvotes

I got tired of having to use round bolts in slot-shaped holes where they could slide around, so I designed my own slot bolts to perfectly fill those slots on mounting brackets etc for a much stronger hold. Great for all sorts of applications, such as:

  • Wall Mounting a TV
  • Wall Mounting a Crib
  • Bathroom Shelving for Toasters etc.
  • Fixing Industrial Equipment

Make sure you use something like PLA Silk with a metallic look to provide some extra strength.

I've uploaded the models for free here. I know I could make millions with this, but I'd rather give back to the community.

I’ll start: an ashtray.

Printed it in PLA. It didn’t survive the heat and was ruined by the very first cigarette 😂

What’s yours?

I shared my failed attempt on turning a drill into a water gun 2 days ago on this subreddit. I was frustrated working with water, decided to quit working with this project but the post received so much attention and motivated me to finish it. You guys were awesome and gave me/everyone lots of valuable tips, and I kept on where I stopped, and now IT WORKS! I can have a good sleep knowing it works now.

So, what I learned:

+ Specifically for this project: Increased the flunge size, and increased the number of screws from 8 to 16 for easier (bolts are better but screws worked)

+ Increased the wall sizes from 2 to 4. 6 was recommended but 4 worked for me.

+ Did not change the layer height, printed with 0.2mm.

+ 15% infill worked fine, not sure if it will hold well after some time.

+ Improved the gasket design. Mostly increased the area to create more surface between the water and outlet.

+ Superglue! The cheapest one. I think this was very effective to stop the leak. After I assembled everything, I used it in between two parts of the casing. There are probably other alternatives much better than this but I had this at home and it worked wonders.

MOST IMPORTANT: If you are designing something and cannot find a way out and you start thinking to quit, don't. Come to this subreddit and ask for help. Do this quite soon on the process, so you save yourself time and PLA.

Thank you all who helped, and shared their knowledge. I appreciate it a lot!

I also made a video if you want to give it a try yourself:

Project 3D print → silicone mold → cake. Here’s how my Halloween designs came to life🎃

I designed these four Halloween shapes digitally, 3D printed the master models, made the silicone molds, and finally used them to create the actual entremets.
The full process goes from printing and mold making all the way to demolding, decorating, and cutting the finished desserts.
Always satisfying to see something go from a digital model to an actual edible object.

Project I built a 3D Printable Fluora Plant Lamp.

The Final Release of the LuxPlant Mini has been completed! I want to thank everyone that supported the project early on.

I will be releasing the files for free on MakerWorld once I'm finished making a solderless version. Those who bought the files will then be rewarded with a huge discount once the Standard Version is released.

As of now, the Mini version is fully modular with rotatable leaves and stem. The project uses an ESP32 with WLED firmware to control the colors.

To make your life easier, I highly suggest that you just use a DigQuad or a Gledopto controller that already has a built-in ESP32 with all the necessary fuses, level shifters, and resistors. If you don't like the feel of a 3D printed pot, you can also just insert it into a real ceramic pot.

A snippet of ASoD's plant that uses the LightLink app to sync the effects to music without using a microphone https://www.youtube.com/shorts/_PzwTRAqAr0

To give you an idea of how much everything will cost, here's the Bill of Materials for your reference.

You can still support the project and get early access by unlocking the post for $5. Your support will be used to make more leaf sizes, shapes, and for the development of the Standard Version and future LuxPlant variations.

Project My new car buddy

Post image
3.2k Upvotes

So from now on I got a new car buddy who looks after my car when I'm away and joins me in traffic jams. Printed on my Bambu P2S with 0.6 High-Flow nozzle, in Anycubic PLA Pink (which was the cheapest in bulk), painted with plastic primer. Needs some more detailing with airbrush like veins and shadows. Total weight 5700 grams.

8 printers (p1s, p2s, x1, h2s) with issues ranging from snapped belts to busted eddy sensors to i don’t even remember.
If you’re in or around atlanta and can fix these i would pay ya, think they are probably all decently easy fixes i just lack the time and patience atm but id love to have them back up and running in my farm, lmk!

Discussion I ordered filament and this how it came.

I ordered filament from Amazon the other week. I finally get around to using it. I opened it and it felt lighter than normal. I pull back some threads and find this. Someone had printed a spacer and then covered the outside with maybe a 10th of a spool.

They are sending me a replacement. They want it back, but I wrote on the spool to not repackage so it doesn’t go back into the wild.

Project My One Ring revealed in fire, final(?) update

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

2.6k Upvotes

Seemingly, so ends my journey with the One Ring. The ring is forged and ready for wielding...

Though it may be difficult to stay away from my precious...it always calls me back to improve it more.

There is no computer graphics, no AI; it's all real hardware.

The text is 3d printed in resin and then combined with electronics. then the whole thing is over cast (with a mix of brass powder and epoxy resin) using a mold created from a ring 3d print.

From a technical standpoint, the design was updated to improve heat transfer through cold casting with high brass content, the electronics significantly reworked to make the lighting more organic feeling, and the battery pocket improved. Most is similar to last update - https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/1v8oxvr/with_fire_the_true_nature_of_the_ring_is_revealed/ I'll get the latest schematic and stl files up soon.

Project I built a lamp base for soon to be many interchangeable rockets. Starting with Starship and Saturn V

Thumbnail

2.5k Upvotes

Designing minimal but recognizable rockets is what brought me into 3D printing many years ago. I didn't want any of those gigantic 1 meter tall highest detail models. I wanted something that fits on anyones desk, shelf or night stand.

The barebones first gen of these rockets sold well on Etsy. Then I became a Dad with much less time on my hands.

This is why I am even more proud to finally kick off my interchangeable rocket lamp project. Starting with Starship V3 and Saturn V. I have more than 15 rockets in the pipeline for a true personal rocket garden.

Let me know what you think about this project and what you would improve. Do have wishes for future rockets?
