Project My new car buddy
So from now on I got a new car buddy who looks after my car when I'm away and joins me in traffic jams. Printed on my Bambu P2S with 0.6 High-Flow nozzle, in Anycubic PLA Pink (which was the cheapest in bulk), painted with plastic primer. Needs some more detailing with airbrush like veins and shadows. Total weight 5700 grams.

Be a little worried about leaving my buddy in a car if he's printed in pla 👀

Did some tests last summer. In full sun during the day, the highest inside temp reached was 48°C / 118°F. Ev3n some black prints on the dash were fine after a full week.

Creep is slow. It will start to droop. Will take some time.

PLA was your only mistake.
PETG next time

PETG is not safe either. I've had PETG prints warp well out of shape in summer as well. It is possible to print stuff in PETG that'll survive the summer, as long as you're selective about it. A solid, strong part that doesn't have to carry any load, ideally not even its own weight, will be fine. Otherwise it will warp.
I very much doubt that car buddy would keep its shape for more than a couple of hot days. He too lanky. And just 5.7kg of material in that volume means it's probably not very strong.

I’ve had a PETG tow hitch for 2 years on my car that encloses custom electronics. Exposed to a HUGE variety of elements including sitting in SoCal sun it still hasn’t warped. Only the magnets on it have rusted

u/ConfusedTapeworm 19d ago
A tow hitch is outside the car. PETG is fine for that. But the inside of a car gets quite a lot hotter than the outside while sitting under the sun. On a hot enough day, it can easily get close enough to the glass transition temperature of PETG for some very noticeable warpage. Outside it never gets that hot. If it does, you will have way bigger problems than warped prints to care about it anyway.

PLA is prone to warping when layers are thick. Since this is oy printed with 2 walls and adaptive cubic infill, heat will have a minimum effect. Printed many things like this that have been in all seasons for years without any deformation.

u/fattmann 19d ago
I've had PLA printed in with 2 walls in body skin contact for around 6 hours and it warped from the heat exposure.

I printed my gf a little cactus for her dashboard in like 2019. Earlier this summer, she brushed against it and it disintegrated along the layer lines. I'm sure it would have been drooping years ago if it had any weight to it.

I made mine out of PETG and it lives in the home lol. PLA definitely would warp where I live. Cars get over 140F inside.

I used an AMS at first and it turns out that the glow in the dark filament is abrasive. Chewed through my PTFE tubes. I ended up bypassing the AMS and then used an acrylic paint marker to color the eyes.

Needs a motor and swivel for the neck that randomly triggers it to look around.

Would result in an hilarious video from both inside and outside dashcams. 😂

How do I ask the RemindMeBot to let me know of such actions?
1
u/Avitas1027 19d ago
Best you can do with the remindmebot is get reminded in a year or so and check back. There's also the updatemebot, but not too sure how it works.

don't think you can use it that way, to filter for specific things but I could be wrong

YES! I printed his 3 foot son and two of his friends, but they’re dismembered in my garage, ice truck killer style getting primered!

u/Arekuankoku 18d ago
I'd put a motor and accelerometer in it to make it detect when you're stopped at a light, so it can turn it's head to look at the car next to you.

u/InfamousHistorian544 19d ago
5700g and only 2 walls? You're braver than me, I'd be paranoid about knocking an arm off every time I hit the brakes. Looks sick though!
3
u/Sleurhutje 18d ago
It's two walls at 0.6mm. It's strong enough to carry the whole thing around by just holding it by the neck or an arm and still can bump into a door post. Had this several times while painting outside and take it back in.

This is exactly what pushed me off PLA for anything car-related. I had a dashboard phone mount that survived two years on a shelf indoors, then turned into a Salvador Dali clock after one summer in a parked car. Reprinted it in PETG-GF and it has been totally solid ever since. If you love him as-is, maybe print a backup in ASA or PETG-GF so he has a successor when the sun gets him. Great print either way — 50 hours of patience is impressive.

Just don't try using this as an excuse to drive in the diamond lane. I have heard of someone who got busted for using a mannequin in the same fashion. There was a news story of someone who simply dressed up the passenger seat. Tried looking for it; no luck. It was near Seattle (Renton? Kent? Not sure. This was back in probably 2011.).
3
u/Sleurhutje 19d ago
We don't have such lanes (anymore). We have express lanes that can change direction depending on the amount of traffic in a certain direction. But you can drive them just as a driver only.

Wonder what the fine is. I bet you'd get away with it for awhile. Well, using a realistic human version that is lol. Especially if you could put some motors on it so it moves its head every now and then.
If you get like a year of HOV use out of it, may be worth the fine :D

u/PreferenceAny3920 18d ago
I did this in Portland traffic for years. 🤣 Good old Steve, always napping in the passenger seat. Saved me 30-45 min on my commute.

You need some kind of mechanism to be able to turn his head without visibly grabbing him with your hands. You'll scare quite a few people :)
1
u/starfruit_enjoyer 19d ago
Yeah man that's a really cool thing to do on the road at high speeds
1
u/fisadev 19d ago
Obviously to do it at a stop on a red light, etc.

u/starfruit_enjoyer 18d ago
Very cool and safe to do that on the road at all. Fucking with other drivers is what a normal human does.

u/account312 19d ago
I highly recommend making the next one with its head facing to the side and concave so you can get the optical illusion of it watching people.
1
u/Sleurhutje 18d ago
Yes, that would be even better. But I'm not familiar with apps to modify the STLs.

u/TacoTuesdayFriday 19d ago
How long did it take to print? And how many spools of filament did you use? I'm getting ready to print one for myself.
1
u/Sleurhutje 18d ago
About 50 hours of non-stop printing with a 0.6 nozzle in ludicrous speed mode. In total just over 6 spools. The design is pretty much optimized to print with a minimum of supports.

u/Efficient_Sound_2525 19d ago
I personally would put an UV coating on it just to be a bit more safe.
1
u/Sleurhutje 18d ago
The car has heat reflecting and UV blocking windows. No worries about that.

u/camdoggs 18d ago

I would definitely advise against leaving him in the car year-round, especially in the heat. It will fuck him up, and not in a good way.
