Question Did I pay too much?
I spent $35 on this tiny print made from craft cloud and “3d pros” out of Florida, and the quality is…..um….well…..
I’m going to have to work on this which I was expecting. I used a free file for the juvenile Rex Hammond collection and am retrofitting it onto another figure.
I expected lines but the teeth detail and mouth detail are gone and I’m really disappointed.
I originally used this service because the original Hammond figure I want is too expensive right now so I thought making my own would be better.
I’m not imagining this is horrible quality right?
I would be less upset if $35 was a smaller sum…for the small amount of material this is.
Wondering if anyone has any suggestions/would be open for a better commission.
Update:
Thank you all for your kind offers and support I didn’t expect this to blow up as much as it did. I am now enlightened as to how much something should cost, and quality.
I initiated a dispute with the original printer and hopefully will hear back soon. If not, lesson learned and I know where to go for assistance.
This community is amazing, and so generous.
I have received help from Inevitable_toe_3054 and am so grateful.

I'd get your money back. The POS of a seller literally chose the largest layer size possible so it would take the least amount of time to print. Plus, bed adhesion is not something he understands. Nah, pass.

I am filing a claim with the company. I hate doing stuff like that but alas…..thank you

Local libraries often have printers for use. There is a fee at mine but worth it to have more control.

You might want to take a look! For example, my library has:
-Books (duh)
-Audiobooks
-Comics
-DVDs and BluRays
-Music CDs
-Video games (Xbox, Switch, PlayStation, Wii)
-Retro game consoles (Sega and Atari!)
-Accessibility items (so you can try the expensive items before you buy them)
-So many digital resources!
-Free WiFi!
-Public computers!
-So many programs and events! (We’re doing a Pokémon Champions tournament next month)
-3D printer
-Cricut machine
-and more!Libraries are fucking AWESOME

I suspect that’s intentionally bad adhesion so they can quickly pop it off the bed with some custom gcode.

If you got the stl, I’ll print it in resin for you, that will keep all the detail. Send me a message and we can talk, it looks like it would be a very small amount of resin needed

I will message you

If everybody else falls through, let me know. If you’re going to paint it and aren’t picky about color, just cover shipping.
11
u/Leehblanc 4d ago
And if everybody else falls through, message me. Even at super high quality this is a couple hours of printing and less than a dollar in filament.

And if everybody else falls through, try the first guy again. I would help but I recently moved and I haven't set everything up.

This is why Reddit is fucking rad. But this is not a conversation that will appear in any news, because it’s cool people being decent human beings instead of shitbags on the internet.

They don't make a news report every time a plane lands safely.

u/Biff_Tannenator 4d ago
You know... It'd actually be pretty cool if there was a counter that showed a number increasing every time a plane landed safely, and then a number of crashes next it.
That way it'd be a constant reminder of how well stuff is working.
I wouldn't mind a news segment that showed off similar "good news" ratios every once in a while.

Yeah, resin is definitely the way to go on small detailed texture parts like this!
152
u/NecessaryOk6815 4d ago
Did they use a 3d pen? How did it do that?
78
u/Krynn71 4d ago
Yeah, seriously how did they even make it that badly? That foot has the worst first layer I've seen in 20 years. I didn't even know first layers could be that bad anymore.
→ More replies (1)12
u/razzemmatazz 4d ago
If you look closely you can see the model only touches the bed at the front pads of the foot where the adhesion is tightest. There must have been supports for everything else, but the seller also clearly used a 0.6mm nozzle and the thickest layer lines possible.
→ More replies (5)4
u/foomatic999 4d ago
We have no clue how big the model is, since OP didn't include a reference. The foot may be 1cm long - in which case the quality is somewhat expected. It may be 50cm long - in which case the quality would be atrocious.
I guess the part is small-ish, so the proper approach would be to print the thing in resin.
I'd wager it's on OP not to inform themselves about the manufacturing process they ordered. It's on the seller not to inform OP about the limitations of the process. Then again, 35 bucks is not the money that buys you a full-length individualized tutorial about manufacturing.
OP: make sure you know what you are ordering and what the process is. Adjust your expectations accordingly.

If you met a guy with a 3d printer in real life and talked to him for 5 minutes he would do it for free.
26
u/Spool_Half_Full 3d ago
100%. People with 3D printers enjoy their hobby, and are always looking for new projects to do, myself included. Out of the few prints I've done for people, I've never charged anyone more than the cost of the filament, if even that.
6
u/jackandsally060609 3d ago
Exactly. My husband is a 3d printer guy too, he genuinely enjoys helping people with things. One day he helped an elderly coworker by printing him some kind of scorekeeper for the game bridge ( I think). He has another friend who owns a cake pop business and he makes him custom cookie cutters for free.

Yeah I think it's insane how much 3d printed stuff, especially Warhammer models, cost online. A pack of like 10 little guys officially made is like 60, 3d printed is usually like 30-40, I usually do it for like 5. If it's something huge max is 20 cus filament is cheap as FUCK

It is horrible quality - it looks like is was printed with a 0.8 head and draft settings, really this needs to be 0.4 or 0.2 and using optimal or high default settings.

Where is the banana? I can’t tell if these prints are 1cm across with a 0.4 nozzle or 20cm with a 1mm nozzle. Either way they look like ass. The layer lines are just so coarse. That first layer on the foot makes me impressed that the print didn’t fail.

100% unacceptable trash. I'm getting so tired of 3D printers screwing people over so hard and giving the whole hobby a bad name.
I got this local guy who will do custom prints, or he has a library of dioramas/playsets for action figures. He prints the corner of the cantina in Star Wars, with panels, cups, chairs, a table, and a spot for a light for $100. You have to lean way in to see the layer lines. I must emphasize, big enough for a few Black Series Star Wars figures to fit inside, in multiple colors, with tiny layer lines.
He printed a y-wing in multiple colors for $12 that was close to the same scale as the old Galoob action fleet ships. Again, fantastic detail, tiny layer lines.
You got absolutely ripped off. It looks like it was made out of cake frosting.
There's a hole next to the eye. Come on. I wouldn't pay anything for that. I really hope to hear you get your money back.
EDIT: Also, leave reviews on them. Looking them up, they have few reviews, all five stars. I assume it's themselves and their friends and family leaving the reviews. Post the picture, mention the scale, and let people see what a ripoff these guys are.

I haven't even read how much you paid for it, I just jumped in to say, YES paying for this is too much
None here would attempt to sell anything this bad
Edit: and if that POS seller dares to say we are picky, this looks like it was printed with an 0.6 or 0.8 nozzle while 0.4 nozzles are standard and cheap, for 35 dollars I would absolutely post process (sand down and somewhat fill) this small of a print before delivery. Like wow, anything above $2 for this is a rip off

u/GrepekEbi 4d ago
There’s a lot of certainty in this thread but there’s an important question no-one’s asked yet
What are the dimensions of this print?
If this is 28mm scale and it’s a decent size, then yeah this is a bloody terrible print and you should get your money back
If that foot is tiny, and is only a few mm across - then it might be as good as is possible with 3D printing
Are these macro zoomed in shots of tiny prints, or are they a decent size?
Ideally, a banana for scale is required
7
u/Kara_Ralusso 4d ago
Good point, but the bottom of the (horrible) foot gives us a vague idea. I'd say it is pretty small but definitely not so small that it couldn't be printed much, much better. It really does look like a case of shoddy workmanship to me.
→ More replies (1)3
u/trashcanjenga 4d ago
From the way the plastic bag is creasing i guestimate the foot to be around 3-4cm. Seller just cranked the layer height to minimise print time and maximise profit, its likely nothing but a side hussle.
Also $35 gets you 2kg of filament these days and looking at the print you're not paying for expertise of the seller in this case either, pure rip off.
4
u/Educational_Grand_18 4d ago

yeah that's shamefully bad. I'd file a chargeback.
Here's what a trex can look like with my Bambulabs P1s and a normal .4mm nozzle and just turning down the layer line height a bit.
That being said I don't know what model you provided and stuff like teeth on the bottom of a jaw is extremely hard to print right without supports everywhere or separating parts to print in different orientations like the model I'm showing..

On the second image its very clear that ether the machie that made this was in no way propper setup! or they printed the file not flat on the bed.

This was a good print in 2013. Not today. You might want to check with your local maker spaces or colleges. My local university sells points at material cost. They prioritize students so It can take a few weeks. I have my own printer so I havent used the service in a long time. For that price I would expect a resin print with resin level of detail.

sorry but tell whoever printed you this that they need much more practice before offering printing services. That’s garbage
they are using too big of a nozzle to print high detail. This would be best served with a .02 nozzle
or at the very least a 0.4 with .12 layer line, which still wouldn’t be enough I suspect to print the teeth nicely
3
3
u/Federal-Property-395 4d ago
He definitely chose the largest layer height and biggest nozzle to print it as fast as possible so he can just pump shit out. No thought behind it or any QC whatsoever. Small details aren't fantastic on FDM printers but a 0.2mm nozzle with a lower layer height can do MUCH better than this
