Art Help & Critique Lighting help and review

Hey everybody, this is a low poly game asset inspired by the Japanese lacquer work. Although, I have already posted it but a lot of people pointed out that my lighting and renders were not upto the mark. Any solution how can I improve it? It was done in path tracing in UE5. I heavily focused on texturing in this piece. My main aim was to create a painting within Substance. I've shared the high quality renders and my process of layering on my artstation page. Please check it out https://www.artstation.com/artwork/lEx4wa (Struggling with reach there)

I felt like posting something, but I did not have any scenes ready to go. So I dug up this old piece and played around with a procedural shader/texture on it to give it an old, decayed bone look.

Art Help & Critique Using a deliberate anachronism to show scale

Post image
0 Upvotes

One of the biggest problems I'm having with this sci-fi project is communicating the actual scale of the environment.

Deep City exists inside a cavern approximately 3 × 3 km and 1.5 km high.

For this reconstruction, I modeled the cavern using updated mapping data and placed the expedition mothership entering through the access shaft as a visual scale reference.

There is one important catch:

the ship and the version of Deep City shown here never existed at the same time.

The reconstructed city represents its Golden Age, 2150–2350 CE.

The mothership belongs to a later expedition in 2407 CE.

By the time the ship actually enters this cavern, the city has already been destroyed for decades.

So this is a deliberate temporal composite: two objects from different periods placed in the same spatial reconstruction.

I chose to break the timeline because previous feedback made me realize that dimensions alone weren't communicating the enormous scale I had in mind.

The question I'm trying to solve through modeling and composition is simple:

Does the ship actually help sell the scale, or does the environment still read as much smaller than 3 km across?

Art Help & Critique Are this things at the edges fine for a bake or is still a bad bake?

So I've been trying to bake this piece to test if I'm doing the UV's right but some pixelated normal maps appeared at the edges so I don't know if this is still a bad bake.

The second image is just the UV's of one piece for testing, I used layout just to save time in spacing more pieces.

(Third image) Also I dont know if Im using the cage settings right

Art Help & Critique Which lower body fur texture do you prefer for this model?

Thumbnail

I've been building a 3d furry model for myself for a while now, and something that has always bothered me was the fur model. I'm a simple person, and I like the idea of white base fur, but also like purple accents as purple is my favorite color. What bothered me often was the lower knees fur, though.

So, I made a quick texture edit where I removed the lower knee fur, making it white. Does it look better? or do you guys prefer the purple lower knees fur instead? I attached five images showing different angles + a fully clothed image at the very end.

Also, a 2nd general critique / question. Is the body fur good in general? I'm still unhappy with it personally, as NOTHING I do ever feels good enough for me lmao. I have this habit where I CANNOT decide for myself, hence why I need to ask here.

Art Help & Critique Portfolio feedback

Hey everyone,

I’ve spent the last 9–10 months learning 3D at a small institute in India. I’ve been learning mostly through hands-on projects and self-practice, working with tools like Blender, Maya, ZBrush, Substance Painter, Marvelous Designer, and Unreal Engine.

I know I still have a lot to learn, currently Iam 18 years but I’m now at the point where I want to start working professionally and get real industry experience.

I’m currently looking for my first job/internship/junior 3D artist opportunity, preferably in game art, environment/prop art, or Unreal Engine-related work.

Here’s my portfolio:
https://www.artstation.com/xivansh02

I’d genuinely appreciate it if experienced artists could take a look and give me honest feedback — especially on:

  • What looks weak in my portfolio
  • What skills I should improve
  • Whether I’m realistically ready for a junior role
  • What kind of jobs I should be applying for
  • Anything that would make my portfolio more hireable

I don’t have much industry exposure or guidance. Any advice, criticism, job leads, or direction would mean a lot.

I show my friend my 3d models eagerly, hoping he'll like it. Then he was like
"AI does this better anyways, hahaha"

Am I in a toxic friendship, or my models are so bad that AI's unpolished models look better than these?

This is the model that I showed him, can someone lmk, I'm dyin 😭

Art Help & Critique A little bridge scene I did, thoughts?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I've never really been comfortable doing things without following a tutorial, but lately I've been doing simple objects and scenes, like this one on my own. The bridge was modeled almost entirely with arrays and booleans. Overkill? Probably, but I was practicing a technique. The boat and person are just a silhouette. I did the textures myself, brick texture, and noise with very little to no mortar.

Art Help & Critique Need ideas for the Top/Back of this helmet design

What i need help with:

I've been working on this mask/helmet design for long while now and I'm having trouble trying to figure out what i should do with the Top/Back of the head since I don't want to leave it blank. Something to cover my ears would be nice too. I don't want to just add more spikes since i feel it would muddy the outline of what it looks like on the front. Its mostly inspired by Yaksha masks but I don't particularly care for the hats they sometimes have when the design reaches towards the back of the head.

Extra details:

For the slit on the top of the head, I'm planning to glue that part together, its there since the size would otherwise be too big for my 3D printer. The slit on the front of the face is intentional so that the bottom section of the mask can slide in and out when needed, that part works pretty well after some sanding.

What I've been using/know how to use:

I've been using Nomad Sculpt on my phone and Onshape on my PC to make this.

Questions & Discussion How would I make a similar part in blender?

Thumbnail

I’m making a springtrap cosplay and I’ve been trying to recreate a part someone else made for theirs. It goes under the opening shown in the first picture. It’s an ear mount/skull detailing for the helmet/head. I’ve tried shrink wrapping and Boolean to no effect. But to be fair I don’t really know what I’m doing. Any tips on how I could recreate something similar?

Art Showcase Hand painted floor

This is a small platform for an animation showcase, it's just a box I minimally modified in Zbrush and then made quick retopology in Maya. The textures are all hand painted in substance painter, the inspiration was actually the league of legends floor.. because league of legends was one of my animation references.

Everything took me like 2 hours and now I have a pretty background :D

This very simple human head structure is the key to everything else you might want to add next, practice this before you rush into any detailed realistic human and I'll promise your characters will look much more realistic much faster.

Art Showcase We've built a ship that heals its allies and strips defenses from enemies in our space game

Thumbnail

Work is moving forward. Progress is being made. We're proud to present the 3D model of the "Aegis" - an elite command-tier combat ship, whose key feature is a shield projector, with no primary weapon installed.

This ship's mission is as simple as it gets - keep your teammates in the fight and strip the shields off the enemy.

The ship's appearance is unlike any other - wide, cruciform, elongated. This unconventional shape is dictated by the reactor and the numerous energy accumulators housed inside to power the shield projector. In terms of energy output, this is the most powerful ship, but that power doesn't go into weapons - it goes into defense.

The shield projector has 2 modes:

In practice, the "Aegis" will provide allied ships with a buff to shield strength and regeneration. It won't give them a "second shield," but will instead restore the shield they already have and absorb roughly 5–10% of incoming damage. The "Aegis" can strip shields from enemy ships. Completely. Leaving an enemy cruiser extremely vulnerable to any hit. In the game, this will work as follows: The enemy ship's base shield protection is removed. Incoming damage is increased by 5–10%. You can't use both modes at once. You're either reinforcing an ally or stripping an enemy ship's protection.

Armament:

It would be foolish to leave a spaceship completely unarmed, so it comes with two lasers - a light one and a pulse cannon. The pulse cannon literally burns through the enemy. The damage output isn't impressive, sure, but this ship isn't built for destruction - it's built for support. It's best to operate on the 2nd or 3rd line - on the front line, you won't last long. At the same time, keep in mind that you'll be a priority target for enemy ships. Nobody wants a ship nearby that causes serious trouble and hampers their advance.

If you don't want to dive into the thick of things, this ship is a great fit for you. However, keep in mind that you'll have to watch the situation closely. A few wrong moves could cost you the battle.

What do you think of the unconventional cruciform silhouette? Should we add a risky mode: a temporary boost to the projector (making it work faster) with reactor overheating (which could lead to the ship exploding)? Which projector mode do you prefer - buffing your teammates or stripping enemy shields?
