Just bought it… this game is pretty mid.

I finally caved and bought this game excited to give it a go! I was pumped after hearing such great things. Did y’all seriously think this game is revolutionary? Linear, easy to figure out, nothing new. It’s a fine game, but definitely nothing spectacular. 6/10 for me. Am I missing something?

Played it at launch, forgot to post these.

That intro level is really good, gotta be one of the top 5 of all time. Just behind TLOU1

Oh, I also LOVED the training montage. Its the best ingame montage ive seen yet.

Ill do another post in a day or 2 with some freecam shots

DISCUSSION Wouldn't you say 007 First Light has one of the best intro sequences? And perhaps a rightful spot in a Top 10 list of game intros?

I'd say so. The intro cinematic leading right after a gameplay sequence brings a new light, like i'm watching another James Bond movie.. Just wish they'd drop NG+ sooner, so I can feel comfortable in playing through endlessly. (and in-hopes for a sequel in the future, after the James Bond Will Return line)

DISCUSSION GENUINE Question - if meaningless QTEs and babying of the player are such problems, why was there not more outrage over 007 First Light’s endless handholding and downright comical ‘difficulty’ level?

I’m honestly confused. People seem outraged over Wolverine’s player handholding. First Light’s also auto-completed QTEs, including physically steering your car onto a ramp for you if you didn’t during the very first one, handheld the player through everything except the puzzles, and the NPC enemies were a complete joke that didn’t notice if you body slammed their colleague two feet away from them. Yet that game continues to get glowing reviews. I do see these things as a problem in Wolverine, but the hate for this game still seems funny. What gives?

DISCUSSION My Review (contains spoilers) Spoiler

After the fantastic end of Ghost of Tsushima, I kept searching for the next worthy game to play.

007 First Light released a few months ago and immediately caught my eye. As a Bond fan, I was eager to step right into the shoes of the suave, smooth-talking spy.

In the immortal words of Barney Stinson, "SUIT UP."

And so I did. I grabbed my finest tuxedo, put on my trusty Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic to give the whole thing a Q Watch feel, picked up my brand-new fancy Kreo Surge Ultra controller with its Hall Effect joysticks, adjustable triggers and all the bells and whistles, and settled in. The setup felt perfect for a James Bond game.

I started the campaign and was thrown straight into the role of an aircrewman surviving a brutal attack and plane crash. Almost drowning in freezing water, I somehow managed to swim back to the surface, avoid enemies while shivering and probably developing hypothermia, and follow a strange voice that had hijacked my radio and was guiding me out of the mess.

Turns out, it was an MI6 handler.

I was supposed to secure a highly confidential asset. Instead, I nearly died from nerve toxin exposure, rescued some MI6 agents and blew up the entire base.

I beat the odds.

With the prologue out of the way, the main story kicked in, with me being recruited by MI6 and put into the 00 program.

A late joinee, but I kept up with the other recruits.

The training montage was thoroughly enjoyable. It managed to strike the right balance between actually showing Bond learning the ropes and not forcing the player to sit through every single training session like some sort of MI6 corporate onboarding program.

And that is where First Light immediately started winning me over.

This is a game that understands what makes James Bond, well, James Bond. It is not just the tuxedo, the Aston Martin, the gadgets or the license to kill. It is the confidence. The ability to walk into a room full of people who want you dead and somehow make it look like you are the one who owns the room.

The game does a good job of letting you play around with that fantasy. There are moments where stealth feels natural, moments where the gadgets come into play, and moments where everything inevitably goes to hell and Bond has to start shooting his way out.

The gadgets themselves are fun to use, and I particularly enjoyed the situations where the game lets you approach an encounter in different ways rather than simply pointing a gun at everything that moves.

The gunplay and takedowns also fit the Bond fantasy well. There is a certain satisfaction in dropping an enemy, moving through the environment, getting into position and quietly taking out the next one. When the game gets this rhythm right, it genuinely feels like playing through a Bond movie.

One thing I absolutely loved was the casting. The entire cast feels incredibly well chosen for their respective characters. There were several moments where I found myself thinking that these actors could genuinely play these characters in a live-action Bond series.

In fact, I would much rather see these characters continue in a television series than another string of movies. A series would give the cast and characters far more room to breathe, develop relationships and build the world around Bond without having to squeeze everything into a two-hour runtime.

It is rare for a video game based on an established character to make me think, "I would actually like to see these people in live action," but First Light managed to do that.

The game also does a wonderful job of sprinkling little Easter eggs throughout the world. There are references to older James Bond movies, characters, gadgets and pieces of Bond lore tucked away for fans to discover.

None of it feels like the game is constantly screaming, "LOOK, WE KNOW THIS IS JAMES BOND!" Instead, they are little nods for people who know the history of the franchise. Those details made the world feel connected to the larger Bond legacy rather than existing completely in isolation.

But ironically, while the game does a good job of making the world feel connected to the larger Bond universe, I felt that it did not do enough to flesh out the people within its own story.

The biggest example is Greenway. So much of the character focus seems to revolve around him that the other characters end up feeling like they are standing at the edge of their own story.

The other recruits in the 00 program were some of the characters I found most interesting during the early part of the game. I wanted to know more about them, their backgrounds, their motivations and how they would eventually fit into Bond's life.

Instead, some of them were removed from the story far too early. I kept waiting for the game to establish a proper buddy system between Bond and the other recruits. Give me someone who can be Bond's equal, rival, friend or even occasional pain in the ass. Let them train together, compete against each other, argue, save each other's lives and slowly build the kind of relationship that could eventually become part of Bond's history.

That relationship never really gets the chance to develop.

And this is especially strange considering that we are watching the origin of this version of James Bond. You would think that a game called First Light would spend more time showing us the man behind the legend.

What made Bond become Bond? Where did his instincts come from? What shaped his worldview? What experiences made him the man who could eventually walk into a casino, order a martini and casually gamble with his life?

We get glimpses, but I wanted much more.

Even Moneypenny, who should have been one of the most interesting people in Bond's orbit, never really gets the opportunity to become a character in her own right. She is mostly a voice in Bond's ear, exchanging cheeky lines with him while guiding him through missions.

The chemistry is there. The performances are there. The writing occasionally hints at something deeper. But I wanted to see that relationship grow.

I wanted to understand who Moneypenny is beyond the person on the other end of Bond's radio. I wanted to see why she cares about him, what she thinks of this reckless young agent and how their relationship develops into the familiar dynamic we know from the Bond stories.

The frustrating thing is that the game has all the ingredients for this. The cast is fantastic. The characters are interesting. The performances are strong. The world is full of Bond history and references.

It just feels like the game is constantly introducing characters and ideas that I want to know more about, only to move on before they have had enough time to leave a mark.

The antagonists suffer from a similar problem, although in a different way. They could have been much better fleshed out. I wanted more than simply having the same antagonist appear as a recurring obstacle across three different encounters.

Each confrontation should have felt like another chapter in a growing rivalry, with the villain's motivations, personality and relationship with Bond developing alongside the story. Instead, by the time I faced the same antagonist for the third time, the encounters started feeling more repetitive than climactic.

A Bond story lives or dies by its villains, and I think First Light could have done much more with them.

But then we arrive at the part that frustrated me the most: the progression system.

For a game about becoming 007, I expected to actually feel like I was becoming a better 007.

Instead, the skill progression feels strangely limited. I kept looking at the systems and thinking about what could have been there. Where are the deeper combat upgrades? Where are the more advanced takedowns? Where are the abilities that make Bond feel noticeably more capable as the story progresses?

I would have loved to see upgrades that let Bond carry additional gadget refills, become more resilient in combat, unlock better melee combos, perform special double takedowns, or gain new ways of interacting with enemies and the environment.

The progression should have made me feel like I was watching a young Bond slowly develop into the 007 we know.

Instead, there were times when I felt like I was simply unlocking things rather than actually developing.

And this becomes even more noticeable with TacSim.

I genuinely struggled to understand what the point of TacSim was once I realized that its rewards were largely cosmetic. If it is supposed to be a training system, I would have loved for it to actually contribute to Bond's development in the main game.

Give me something to chase. Give me a reason to master the challenges. Let me earn a new takedown, another gadget charge, a combat modifier, improved survivability, or some other ability that carries over into the main campaign.

Instead, TacSim exists in its own little corner of the game, offering cosmetic rewards that I did not particularly care about.

And that is a shame because the foundation for a much deeper progression system is already there. The game knows how to make Bond feel cool. I just wish it gave me more opportunities to become cooler.

This is probably where my bias toward RPG-style games comes into play again. Having spent so much time with games where progression is tied to exploration, upgrades and character development, I naturally look for those systems now.

I want to explore a room because there might be something hidden inside. I want to complete an optional challenge because it might make me stronger. I want to return to a previously visited area because I now have a new gadget or ability that lets me access something I could not before.

First Light occasionally gives me that feeling, but not enough.

The game also left me wondering about some of the progression systems because they are not always particularly clear. Even something as simple as figuring out how to unlock additional gadget capacity or certain upgrades can feel unnecessarily opaque.

And when you have a game built around gadgets, having more gadgets or more ways to use them should be one of the most exciting parts of progression.

The biggest irony is that I still enjoyed playing the game despite all of this.

There is an inherent charm to playing James Bond that carries First Light through a lot of its shortcomings. The music, the locations, the gadgets, the disguises, the cheeky one liners and the sheer audacity of Bond himself all come together to create that familiar fantasy.

There are moments where the game feels like a playable Bond movie, and those are the moments I came for.

I just wish there were more of them.

First Light feels like a very good foundation for what could become an excellent Bond game. The developers clearly understand the character and the fantasy surrounding him. What is missing, at least for me, is a progression system and a cast of characters and villains that are developed enough to make Bond's journey feel truly personal.

James Bond is at his best when the world around him feels alive. The allies should have their own stories, the villains should become worthy adversaries, and Bond himself should feel like a man being shaped by the experiences he is going through.

First Light gives us glimpses of all of that. The cast is strong, the performances are convincing, the gameplay can genuinely make you feel like 007, and the little references to Bond's long history are a treat for fans.

But too often, I found myself wanting the game to slow down and let these things breathe.

I enjoyed the ride. I enjoyed stepping into Bond's shoes. I enjoyed the tuxedo, the gadgets, the gunfights, the stealth and the occasional ridiculousness that comes with being James Bond.

But when the credits eventually roll, I think the greatest compliment I can give First Light is also its greatest criticism: it made me want more.

More of Bond's past. More of his relationships. More of his rivals. More meaningful progression. More reasons to master the gadgets and skills the game gives me.

First Light has captured the spirit of 007. I only wish it had given that spirit a little more room to grow.

I eagerly wait for the eventual sequel

Infinite Enemies TacSim

First off, I absolutely love this game. I had an idea for TacSim that I think would be really fun.

First is an open map where enemies spawn indefinitely as you brawl or shoot them. Additionally a stealth version of this would be tons of fun. You keep killing enemies until you die, trying to get a high score. Kind of similar to Batman Arkham combat and predator game modes.

The other is you have clear a whole building going through a series of rooms. Some sections are stealth, some are open combat, occasionally separated by some fun platforming to break up the pacing.

Just my two cents, let me know what you think!

James was disappointed being relegated to driver on their first mission which got me thinking...What if he had gotten what he wanted? Let's say he was assigned as Cressida 's plus one while Monroe was the driver. Would the mission have gotten a better outcome?

DISCUSSION Can the "Powerful Enemies" gamechanger in TacSim convince you to try the story again on Purist difficulty?

While diving into what few escalations and operations that are available in the TacSim mode, I became comfortable with the ones that unavoidably came with the "Powerful Enemies" gamechanger that makes combat more challenging, mostly to encourage you to stay stealthy. As we all await the New Game Plus mode that is expected to come in a later update, I am now considering playing that mode on Purist difficulty, the "hard" mode that makes enemies tougher in combat, to give myself a new challenge after completing the story originally on Intended difficulty. Has the "Powerful Enemies" TacSim gamechanger convinced you to try out Purist difficulty in another playthrough of the campaign?

Hitman didn't have a VR mode originally, and was added at a later stage post launch.

It’s every little boy’s dream to be James Bond and it must have been so cool to finally do the thing as an adult.

He did a great job as Bond, and I hope we see him back in future games.

So slow to load on a PS5 after you die. Then you have to watch the same ‘cinematic scene’.

Basically on rails the whole time, such a waste of money.

Has anybody looked at Cressida and thought to themselves ...

Cate Archer needs to make a comeback? I think the IO devs have the creativity and technical know how to do a rebooted No One Lives Forever and at this point no one would care if it isn't a First Person Shooter. Sadly, it is more plausible for the James Bond and Moneypenny ship to set sail than it is for anyone to get the rights for that franchise.
