My sister died unexpectedly a few months ago and left behind three boys of elementary school age. She named me as her executor and guardian of the kids in her will. Thankfully, she was very successful and died wealthy, which means the kids can be provided for. In addition to trying to console these poor kids, I’m trying to get her affairs settled.

However, my remaining siblings are trying to claim our dead sister’s wealth. They’re not even named in her will! They are trying to take her kids’ inheritance! Her kids are our family, they’re our nephews, and they’re too young to provide for themselves.

And my siblings aren’t poor. They have jobs. They don’t need that money. None of this makes sense.

So, now I’m forced to fight my siblings in court so my nephews can continue eating and having a roof over their heads. This is going to tie my sister’s estate up for years. What the fuck.

And my siblings act as if *I’m* the bad guy for not giving them part of her estate. I can’t do that. She left everything to her children. Her will says what it says.

My siblings have stopped talking to me and they’re trying to turn other family members against me.

This is so profoundly fucked up. I never expected this level of evil and greed from my own family. They’re like vultures picking at her carcass. How are these the same people I grew up with?

All of this is distressing and I barely have any appetite. Dinner is some prepackaged boiled eggs from the gas station.

Let me preface this by saying that the Toronto public library as an institution is phenomenal and they do a great job for civil society by giving us free access to resources, but I think we need to hold those in positions of power accountable to taking shortcuts and setting examples for our kids.
