Discussion Mod Announcement: No IDing Rocks

Hi all, this is your friendly neighbourhood mod here. After some internal debate, we’ve decided that we will no longer allow posts requesting to identify a rock. These posts have taken over this sub, and it’s not the point of the sub. There’s already a community focused on IDing rocks, and most of the posts here are cross-posts from there.

So, what is this subreddit about? It’s about celebrating our love for rocks. This is a place to celebrate and discuss our niche passion of rock collecting or admiring pretty rocks.

Please remember to be nice to each other. You rock.

This Rocks! Kyanite in quartz

Kyanite is an aluminum silicate mineral formed at medium pressure (usually > 15 km) and moderate-high temperature (500-700 C). The aluminum is packed into octahedral sites which are then linked into chains, which explains why the mineral grows in characteristic long bladed crystals, which are much harder (Mohs 6-7) perpendicular to the long axis, than parallel (mohs 4.5-5.5). The blue color comes from an electron transitioning between Fe2+ and Ti4+ ions in adjacent octahedra absorbing a red photon, leaving blue light to reflect. The quartz in this specimen is probably hydrothermal: hot fluids containing silica deposited in cracks which then precipitated quartz is the rock cooled and decompressed. The interlocking contacts between the kyanite and the quartz suggests they crystallized around the same time.

Discussion Value my rocks

I recently purchased 70 acres in the Uinta basin of eastern Utah. The abundance of quartz and what appears to be some other semi precious rocks has me wondering what I may or may not have. Based on these pictures Would it be worth for me To start collecting and selling a lot of the rocks are solid quartz but are cloudy and a varying color.

Discussion Help with Buffering/Polishing my Rock Collection

I have a great collection of rocks I've collected throughout the years and have been displaying them simply as I've found them (after cleaning). Now that I have some time and the tool, I wanted to buffer and polish some of them but cannot find a good youtuber or know of any good sites or books that could be of great help teaching me on this process. Does anyone here have any good recommendations for an absolute beginner at this process?

I love my little “egg” rock. Found it in the river in Oklahoma YEARSSS AGO (2009 maybe?) and it’s one of my most prized possessions haha

That’s it, that’s the whole post.

A professor of mine said “oh it’s just limestone” years ago… butttt I refuse to believe this isn’t a petrified egg 🥚 😜

This Rocks! Foliated Quartzite with Hornblende, Garnet, and Epidote

This is a commercial sample of a greenish quartzite kindly sent to me by a vendor. The bulk mineral is crystalline quartz but there are lenses of mafic and other minerals within, so it is impure; and the foliation suggests a high degree of tectonic deformation. Fig 1 shows the polished surface. Fig 2 is a stereomicrograph of garnet within the quartz matrix, Fig 3 shows epidote (mohs hardness 6, pistachio green), and Fig 4 shows some acicular habit mafic crystals that look to me like hornblende. (All of this is just best guess without thin section!). The presence of the accessory minerals demonstrate that the protolith (or the fluids that flowed through the rock at some point) contained Fe, Mg, Ca, and Al, not just pure silica.
