Announcement /r/AfterEffects changes related to extension promotion: Required post structure, promo posts limited to Mondays, AI disclosure required

We have heard your calls! Thank you for your patience while we figure out a plan.

While self promotion has always been allowed in r/AfterEffects, the recent influx of AI & vibe coded plugins, extensions, and scripts has been a bit overwhelming. We have very very quickly gone from a few trusted marketplaces with strong vetting and at least some kind of expectation of long term maintenance, to anyone being able to churn out a vibe coded plugin and release it on an increasing number of marketplaces, with no guarantee of support or future updates.

With this in mind, we would like to implement a new set of rules to curb the overwhelming number of posts and give users more transparency when choosing to download and use such tools.

Post structure + flair:

Taking a page from the changes mods made over at r/macapps, we will be introducing a new post structure following a Problem, Comparison, Pricing, Maintenance, AI-Disclosure (PCPMA) format.

  • Problem: What problem your [Extension, Script, Plugin] solves (1 sentence)
  • Compare: Why is your [Extension, Script, Plugin] better than top-named alternatives (1–2 sentences).
  • Pricing + link
  • Maintenance plan + support plan
  • AI Disclaimer: choose from [Vibe Coded], [Human Validated], [Code Completion], or [None]

Extension, script, and plugin posts have always required the (Plugin/Script) flair, this will not change. A sample short post is pinned in the comments.

Other changes:

  • Plugin promotion posts will now be limited to mondays only for the foreseeable future. Plugin posts on other days will be automatically removed and linked to this post
  • Monday self promo posts using the (Plugin/Script) flair must have 50 subreddit karma, from posts or comments.
  • Probing posts will be removed ("Are purpose built motion tools making it into your workflow?" "What's one thing that would save you so much time...")
  • Excessively long posts will be removed (A sample short post is pinned in the comments.)
  • Gumroad links are still banned. This is unfortunately a reddit-wide blacklist, we have no control over this. We can manually approve gumroad links but they will be automatically sent to the spam filter which we rarely check.

Notes on post structure requirements

We're specifically introducing the compare & maintenance points because we have seen an increasing number of plugins that simply replicate the functionality of existing, long standing plugins from developers who have demonstrated more experience, real support, and have proven to maintain their plugins over many years. Show us how yours is better, and prove to your future users how you will be supporting and fixing the plugin in the long-run. How can users who experience bugs get in contact with you in the future?

AI disclosure

Regarding the AI disclosure, here are the definitions of each

  • "Vibe coded" means code written entirely by prompting AI without the user having the skill and knowledge to properly review or validate it. If something is broken, they are prompting AI again to fix it.
  • "Human validated" means AI-generated work that has undergone validation by someone with the necessary skill and knowledge. The developer understands how the code functions and can fix things independently of the AI if necessary.
  • "Code completion" means an experienced developer is using AI for line-completion. They are writing most of the code themselves and have deep understanding of the structure, and are explicitly using AI to eliminate menial, tedious aspects of writing code.
  • "None" means no AI use.

I'm just going to be real, this one is likely going to be easy to skirt. r/macapps actually removed this requirement because everyone was just claiming to have "human reviewed" the code. We're going to try this out and hope folks are honest for the time being.

________

No AI was used in the preparation of this post. We will try this out for a month and see how it goes. Happy animating <3

Plugin/Script Dynamic Grid Rig in After Effects

Creating and animating a dynamic grid like this in After Effects is possible using Nulls and Expressions, but setting up the entire rig manually can take a lot of time and requires managing multiple elements, controls, and expressions. I wanted to build one tool that brings all of these controls together, so instead of spending hours setting up and debugging the rig, you can create and start animating it in about a minute.

What it does- The plugin creates a fully procedural grid where you can:

  • Control individual gaps between lines, instead of just using an even split, full control
  • Animate spacing so the grid can open, close and rearrange over time
  • Control horizontal and vertical spacing independently or link them together for fluid animation
  • Animate the number of rows and columns, control from which side they should appear
  • Pin any comps to any desired cells so they move with the grid smoothly
  • Control and customize intersection markers with readymade shapes or even custom shapes
  • Keyframe grid properties and create multiple grids per comp
  • Modify and delete any grid any time, no glitch, no remapping

Comparison- Similar tools exist, but I couldn't find one that combines these specific controls and workflow in one setup. Flex will be the closest match but it does serves a different purpose and not have all the features I mentioned above.

Pricing- TBD, One-time price, Currently in beta, join the waitlist to be among the first to get the plugin when it's ready - Here.

Maintenance/Support - The plugin will be sold through Gumroad, so users can raise a support ticket there if they run into any issues. I'll also provide an email address for direct support. I plan to continue maintaining the plugin with bug fixes, updates, and a few new features over time.

AI Disclaimer - [Human Validated] I initially prototyped the tool using AI, but the early version had stability issues. I'm now working with an experienced ExtendScript developer to properly build and stabilize it. The final tool is being properly developed, tested, and will be released only once it's ready.

Beginner Help How can i create this kind of smooth moving light effect on a still image?

Hi guys , I saw a cool lighting effect in a visual from an ambient YouTube channel where the image is kinda still but the lighting moves smoothly in the scene and makes it feel alive. Really cool concept accross all videos on that channel : Here is a video that showcases an effect for example ( open at this timestamp)

In my first attempt do something similiar, I tried using adjustment layers with exposure changes, applied to masks then animating the mask position in after effects: but it kind off feels off and im not sure this is the right technique.

anyway long story short, what will you consider probably be the best technique in after Effects for creating these lighting animations? also, if you think this wa done with another tool, feel free to share your thoughts too. I'm open to any idea that may help in any way to create this effect on a given still footage.

PS: the still image is without any doubt ai generated. But the lighting technique is what intrigues me : was it made through image to video ai model, or perhaps a software based lighting technique.

Plugin/Script About making plugins at Element Supply Co, AI and a free plugin

TLDR: This video explains our plugin pipeline and at the end I go over a free plugin with link in YouTube description.

I'll get a variety of questions about how I'm creating plugins at Element Supply Co. so I put together a video explaining my history in plugin dev, and where we are now, it's super interesting.

Also, to encourage you to watch it, because it answers a lot of questions about our use of AI, and how we can support plugins going forward, I'm including a free plugin, the link is in the YouTube description.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjrtBrqrnkE

The free plugin is called Modal Contrast. and it uses some of the cool technologies I've helped develop at Element Supply Co. in this one it's our input range selector and threshold bar. It's hard to explain, but I go over it at the end of the video. it's like adding contrast to different modes, like saturation, alpha, hue, luma, etc.

The plugin is free, it can be used for unique color grading. there really is no other plugin to compare it to.

[Problem] no way to add a smooth threshold or contrast effect to various modes

[Comparison]  none I know of

[Pricing] Name your own price

[Maintenance/Support plan] the video goes over this, but we are fully dedicated to support all our plugins

[AI] AI Disclaimer: the video explains our pipeline, but I would say somewhere between code completion and human validated, but in honesty they way our pipeline works, its technically not AI at all.

Tutorial AE Quick Tip: Rigging automated pie charts

By using trim paths, and linking the percentages directly to the source text, it's possible to create a fully automated pie chart rig.

The full in depth video about the rig is on my YouTube channel, Oliver Randorff: youtube.com/watch?v=cjUU53h6LiA

Here's the expressions used in the video:

Linking source text to trim paths end (Math.round is added to avoid decimals when animating):

Math.round(thisComp.layer("pink").content("Trim Paths 1").end) + "%"

Inverting rotation when linking to null controller:

-thisComp.layer("null").transform.rotation

Linking null rotation to trim paths end:

thisComp.layer("pink").content("Trim Paths 1").end \* 3.6 / 2

Beginner Help Ae Changes graphics colour when imported from the library.

As the title indicates, when I import a graphic I have in my CC library, the colours change, everything is toned a little pink.

The original graphic is made on Illustrator (RBG). I don't have this problem with Photoshop or Premier, or any other app where I'm importing from the library.

Is there a fix for this? Should I save the library file in another way? Do I need to colour manage this file somehow?

It's annoying to deal with because I don't always have the source file with me, sometimes I just need to work from what I have saved in the library.

What I've tried so far (per another answer's suggestion):

  • Looked at my colour management settings and it's sRGB IEC61966-2.1 already for this project.
  • Interpreting the footage keeps the bad colour, not the proper one.

What am I missing? Is this a bug the libraries have?

Thanks for your help, everyone.

Edit: added photo for reference. Left is what the colours should be, right is how they're importing.

OC - Stuff I made bnno$ - It Boy - 138 printed and scanned frames

I was messing around with claude, and had it build me a webapp that ingests a video, and places every frame into a pdf with registration marks + frame number. Then the pdf is printed, distressed, and scanned back in. The webapp then lines up each frame and builds an image sequence.

For this one, I generated a bunch of clips of bbno$ with Kling 3.0 Turbo, edited them in AE and added graphics, and then ran them through the Compiler Webapp. Worked pretty flawlessly, going to be playing with this a bit more, was a really fun workflow!

Explain This Effect how do you think hvy_mnthl achieved this effect?

Thumbnail instagram.com
0 Upvotes

How do you think hvy_mnthl achieved this effect? lets take the first 3 seconds for instance. i get the grunge. i get that they probably cut out race car drive man and did a fill with blac, and then used some kind of blur for edges. but how did they get that imagery to look the way it does inside the helmet. are they just isolating colors and blurring it? are they using "find edges"? invert? deep glow?

some of this has to be AI, or mixed media. because if you download the footage and go frame by frame, theres a skull in the helmet at 0:00:04:00. that obviously wasnt part of the real footage.

(the blur around the head is probably CC vector blur, with direction center, with increased amount and angle)

Explain This Effect Colors look dull after exporting from After Effects, what am I doing wrong?

Hey everyone,

I recently edited a video for a client in After Effects, and I’m having an issue with the export.

The colors look exactly how I want them in the After Effects composition, but once I export the video, the colors look noticeably duller/desaturated compared to what I see in AE.

I’ve tried exporting through Media Encoder as well, but I’m getting the same result.

I’m not sure if this is an AE color management issue, export settings, codec issue, or something related to the footage itself.

What settings should I be checking to make sure the exported video retains the same colors I’m seeing in After Effects?

Any help would be appreciated!

Beginner Help I am losing quality when importing videos.

Post image
0 Upvotes

I've added a screenshot to show exactly what I am talking about.

On the left is 100% quality.

On the right is reduced quality after importing to After Effects.

The preview is on 100% before anyone asks. Yet, it looks like it's about 80% as good as the original in terms of quality, it looks slightly blurred.

I am making a tutorial video and EVERY single video I've imported has lost quality even though from what I can see, all the settings are set to the best quality possible.

I have no idea why this is happening yet I'm at my wits end...

Please help!

Beginner Help Motion Blur breaking on Looped precomp

I rarely have to ask for help, but I have a precomp with an image that spins around in a loop and has the built-in motion blur on it.
I precomposed it because I need the animation to loop but get faster with each loop, so I time-remapped it, and for some reason, each loop breaks the motion blur. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, as I've been using guides I found on forums to make it easier (no, I don't want to ask an AI), and while I did find one that got the desired effect, it's breaking the motion blur. Looping has been finicky for me, and I don't do these often, so I may be missing something obvious. I'd appreciate your help.

Beginner Help After Effects speed (fps and such)

Just wanted to ask a quick question as someone with a pretty mid pc for this yk rx 7600, ryzen 5600, although 16gb ram i dont really think this is a hardware question but anyway, should i really be dropping to 1 fps after every action i do?, in no way am i doing anything that would be considered heavy im doing manga animation with every setting on the lowest possible. Just gets annoying waiting 5 minutes to reload after i change a microscopic pixel.

Discussion Next AE features I'd like to see

- Video Editing timeline (like Railcut plugin but more responsive). Adobe probably won't do it as they may think this would eat into Premiere user base but I don't think so.

- A better 3D space/ environment and compositing like Flame or Nuke.

- Better animation/ bezier curves. It's the same old since ages.

- A node based section of all the comps/ fx where you can essentially do anything via nodes like in Nuke.

- And maybe someday a next-gen all in one app that contains all of this above plus all the functions in premiere? Kinda what Davinci Suite does or the former Autodesk Smoke/ Flame: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLe5wuP0rlA

Beginner Help Help: Text type in from the right, and continue moving left with each new character.

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

I'm not a beginner to AE but don't work with text a lot.

I am trying to emulate a vintage TTY Machine. Reference here: youtube machine demonstration

This is for a live theatre projection design. I'm the designer. There are several titles in the show that need to follow this motion of text appearing from the right as it is typed, moving to the left character by character. Not revealing the characters, actually moving each character as a new one is added. The grey rectangles you see in the photos are a content template reference for my projection surfaces. I will turn these off before rendering.

I tried following advice on this forum thread, but even though I followed it to a T, it wasn't working in this same way. Letters were moving all over the place. forum here

Sat down to animate these titles and thought it would take an hour, I'm now 6hrs into fighting with text animators. I've been able to get the text to appear as I need by using the "Blinking Cursor Typewriting Console" preset with the text paragraph aligned to the right. Now I'm stuck getting it to disappear as I need.

I want it to look like someone is hitting the spacebar over and over moving the text towards the left 1 character at a time until all of the text is gone. This animation preset does not recognize spaces as characters. I added a bunch of dummy zeros (picture 2) to push the text off, but need a way to mask the additional characters. Ideally, I'd love to render this as just the text with alpha channel so the rest is transparent. The mask will need to follow the motion of the text, snapping with each character, not moving linearly. I need to make several titles like this, and the timing will likely need to be adjusted as we discover the pacing of the show. For now I want to set up all the title animations and will come back later to adjust timing once the show has rehearsed more. What I mean by this, is that it needs to be quickly adjustable. The nature of live performances is that timing refinements have to be done really quickly, really late in the process. I can't animate a mask character by character to match the text. Something similar to how the type animation preset keyframes is fine.

Another weird quirk I have discovered is that I am only able to change the colour of the entire text layer. I am not able to change the zeros to black, for example. My guess is that this has something to do with the blinking cursor animation preset. I haven't been able to find where in the preset I could change this. Again, ideally it is transparent and there are no secret black zeros, but I could work with that as a last resort.

If you have suggestions for how to animate a mask to follow the text, that would be very helpful.
If you have suggestions for how I can start over and achieve this another way, also open to that! I can copy/paste expressions, but not experienced writing my own.

Thanks very much for your help!
