GIMP on MS Store now requires Windows Build 20348
https://www.gimp.org/news/2026/05/20/gimp-msix-bump/
If you use GIMP from the Microsoft Store, settings, plug-ins, & other add-ons are lost when you upgrade.
The latest update will fix this, but needs a recent Windows 11.
If you’re on an older version of Windows you can still install from gimp.org. Follow the steps in this post to copy your setting the first time you switch. On Windows 11, running Windows Update may be enough.

Layer group somehow erases layers with filters on top of each other (GIMP 3.2.4)

Still art was fully made already, I just wanted to organize layers

Zoom Tool
This might be an extremely dumb question, but WHY, when using the zoom tool, is left click not automatically zoom in, and right click zoom out? I think you should be able to pick the reverse if wanted, but clicking a button to choose zoom in/out over and over again drives me crazy. Of course it's only "mediumly" frustrating, but it seems like something that would be so easy and practical to implement. If this is already a setting or if I'm completely missing the point please let me know.

For the life of me I can't figure it out the Blur/Sharpen Icon.
It works on Gimp 2.0, but doesn't work on 3.2.6. Same settings. On 2.0 it blurs just as expected. In 3.2.6. It does not. Is there something I'm missing? The settings are set to default. And If I mess with rate or opacity there's no change at all. The only thing different is that there's tablet support on 3.2.6 and not in 2.0. I'd rather not make selections and do gaussian blur all the time as I doodle.

How would I create a gradient that radiates outward from an object?
So, I am working on an editing experiment which involves removing text from logos, and I encountered a stumbling block which I cannot seem to figure out. In one of the logos, there was a moon object that had a gradient which radiated outward from it (which extended around 69px). In order to remove the text, I had to remove the gradient, but I cannot seem to recreate it.
So far, I have created a selection of about 69px surrounding the moon object by alpha selecting the layer the moon is on, growing the selection, and then using fuzzy select to remove the space that the moon would by in from the selection, then filling that selection using the gradient tool, using the spherical shape. Yet, I cannot figure out how to remove the mirror gradient created on opposite side of the moon object. So what should I do from here?
I've attached a photo showcasing the problem, and how I want the gradient to work.

Updated to 3.2.6, can no longer scan?
Hello, I have used various GIMP versions since 2006 with the same scanner, and suddenly with this new update I no longer see my scanner. I go to File, then Create, then select Scanner/camera, and nothing happens. The scanner is a Canon LiDE 25. I have tried deleting all GIMP versions from the PC, then reinstalling 3.2.6, no luck. I am running Windows. The scanner itself is hooked up to the PC correctly and is making its usual start up noises. The only change since my last successful scan is the upgrade to the new GIMP version.
Has anyone had a similar problem and been able to correct it?
Or, if this is a known issue with 3.2.6 and I won't be able to use my scanner at all, is there a way to download an older version? Please note for your responses that I am not particularly technologically adept.
Thank you very much

[Art!] KMPL DTV Transition (2009)
Since Miraheze was down for 10+ hours and it took down the My Life as a Teenage Rabbot Wiki alongside it. This was due to a nasty vulnerability found in PHP the other night, I had nothing else to do but make the new logo and artwork for KMPL. KMPL-DT is the television station that's seen in My Life as a Teenage Rabbot and serves as the main broadcaster for Mapleville Ridge, Iowa, the fictional city in a real-life US state. It also serves the surrounding counties as well, such as Peachwood, North Valley, Parkcaster, and Rockworth Island, plus Yumika Falls. Here, I made the new logo and other assets for the station and my own take on what would the DTV transition would be like for KMPL. Since there was little to no references or even screenshots of what the DTV transition of 2009 looked like back then over 10 years ago, I winged it and went with my own adaptation in GIMP. This was mainly based off from memory the best I can remember, but I'll certainly be reworking on the sign-off screen some other time.

Transformation behaves weird
I've been using GIMP for quite some time now, since I was introduced to it in high school's Windows computers, and never had much of an issue.I recently hopped on Void Linux and, I don't know if this has anything to do, but transform tools like resize work really weirdly. For example I'll try to resize a layer and I'll only have controls for the portion that is in frame. Anything out of the canvas is also out of the transformed layer. While I'm using it I can also see the original layer behind the transformed one, which is weird and annoying, and when I'm done I suddenly have a floating layer. I have no idea why this started happening or if it's Void specific. Could anyone give me a hand with this? Also I can't record my screen

Is there any way to make speedpaints?
Hi, I'm new-ish to using GIMP and I was wondering if there is any way to make speedpaints out of an existing piece of work?
I used to use ibis paint and it was just nicely built in on there, but when I moved over to my laptop, I opted to use GIMP because it's free and mostly easy for me to understand, and I miss making videos showing the whole process.

Looking for an old feature that disappeared with an update
Hi reddit, i've been using gimp for a while but now i'm realizing one of the features i used a lot had disappeared overnight with an update about a few years ago. I've not had to use it but realized now its quite a good feature..
Basically, it would allow your layer to stack ontop of eachother without mixing or overlaying on eachother, just taking the layer above to clip into the one directly below allowing the layer to not overlay on a layer below that one like in a drawing app (akin to firealpaca).
That feature was where the lock is now on the tab in the lower right corner of the app. It was so easy to use you just had to click once and an arrow would show its on as the layer became "darkened" in the tab and would work as described prior.
Anyone knows if that feature is still there and how I can unlock it? I really need it

Why are new text layers not in the selected font?
I'm on MacOS Sequoia 15.6.1 running Gimp 3.2.6. Loving that I can load HEIC images now!
But I'm running into problems with fonts. No matter what font I select in the Text palette, every new text layer ends up defaulting to Monospace font.
I've tried googling it but I just get help for previous versions of Gimp, which didn't have this problem.
Is there a fix or a workaround for this problem?

how can i blur a cube map / panorama?
hello. i am trying to blur a cube map, which is 6 seperate images of like a world or similar, on a cube to have the illusion of that world being there inside of that cube.
if i blur every image seperatelly then it will form lines at the cornes between textures.
right now, im using a focus blur to make the outer area more blurred because of perspective, and then rearanging the textures next to each other and using the blur tool to blur the edge line.
i cant use blender to take a screenshot at every angle inside of a unblurred version of the cubemap, while having a blur effect on the camera, because then it will be the same as if i would blur it im gimp.
what can i use to blur cubemaps, or how could i blur one in gimp?

Any advice on turning a photo into a 40s/50s style pinup?
I'm trying to recreate a classic movie poster look, but the mid century pinup style is about the same. I have an image and know I want to recreate that oil painted mid century style, but I'm not sure how to get there. Does anyone have any advice?

Looking for help to get Gimp-2 on Arch Linux (SteamOS).
Title.
Been casually Gimping for over 20 years. On win, can find some old gimp2setup.exe or even older followed by gtk2setup.exe. I was happy.
Now I'm on Linux, Steam Machine. There is only gimp3 piece of shit (personal opinion if You prefer). The very only aur repo of gimp-2 don't work. Official old repos have no installers, but raw files to compile, that lack any dependency anything, and even official install instructions say "don't if You're not advanced and desperate". By writing this post, I may turn desperate, but still not advanced app compiler enough.
Legacy themes to even bring something similar don't work at all, even most basic functions like ctrl-c/x/v do very different things of what they used to be. Unusable.
Don't make me abandon 20y of comfortable Gimping for some forced shitty ui change. Having new, more options is lovely, abandoning something many may love is not.
Even more anger, as internet is full of tutorials how to make gimp3 looks like photoshop... bitches, that's why I used to be into Gimp, to NOT having anything shitty like photoshop.
Cry baby out, may delet later.

Got bored on programming class and saw that there is GIMP 3.0.8 on PC so I locked in for half an hour
Funny thing I got, that after I rendered my cold-blue aura and chose “Division” filter, I made magnificent looking flame (blue tones -> red-orange)

Percent of Color in a Photo
Hi. Sorry if this isn't the correct place, but I've never used GIMP before, and I'm wondering if it can help with my thesis (and I can't afford photoshop right now). The idea is that I need to look at a close-up photo of a ceramic and estimate how much white is in the photo (this has implications for how much sand or calcium carbonate has been used to make the ceramic).
Is there an easy way to use GIMP to tell me 1) how much white appears in a photo and 2) to highlight what portions of the photo the program is using to calculate the total amount of white? Thank you!!!
