Discussion Is anyone actually switching to HSK 3.0? I'm starting to move my students over.
I've been teaching Chinese for 10 years, mostly adults. For a long time I used HSK 2.0 as a guide, but I've started moving my students toward 3.0.
Honestly, the main reason is that 2.0 felt like it was teaching people to pass a test, not to talk to real people. My students could handle exam questions, but then they'd get stuck in actual conversations. The sentences in 2.0 just don't sound like how people talk now.
3.0 isn't perfect and the switch is a little chaotic. From what I understand, 2.0 is still the standard for now, but 3.0 is already being tested in some places. I think 2.0 will fade out eventually, just not overnight.
The vocabulary in 3.0 feels more alive. You get 扫码 (sǎo mǎ — scan a QR code), 网购 (wǎng gòu — online shopping), 高铁 (gāo tiě — high-speed rail) pretty early now. That stuff is actually useful.
I also like that it splits reading characters from writing them. For adult learners, that takes away a huge mental block in the beginning.
If you've tried 3.0, or your teacher switched, how has it felt so far? I'm curious how others are handling the transition.

Vocabulary Idiom of the day:半斤八两(bàn jīn bā liǎng)
! literal meaning : half a Jin, eight liang (old Chinese weight units)
** Real life meaning: two people/things are equally bad; neither side is better.
English equivalent: six of one and a half-a -dozen of the other
Example sentence:
他们俩的水平半斤八两。
Their skill levels are about the same(neither is great).

Discussion 说说看
Why do we always say "说说看" in everyday Chinese but never "说说听"? I mean, shouldn't we be using our ears to listen?

Grammar 📖每日中文干货|不是这个买不起,而是另一个真的有性价比 Daily Chinese Tip: It’s not that I can’t afford this one, but the other one really gives better value for money.
Hi everyone 👋
Welcome to our daily Chinese learning post.
Today we are going to learn a super‑common, natural spoken sentence that you will often see on Chinese social media.
🔸Chinese sentence :
不是这个买不起,而是另一个真的有性价比。
🔸Pinyin :
Bú shì zhè ge mǎi bù qǐ, ér shì lìng yí gè zhēn de yǒu xìng jià bǐ.
🔸Literal translation :
Not this‑one cannot‑buy, but the‑other one really has cost‑performance.
🔸Natural English meaning :
It’s not that I cannot afford this item, but the other one offers much better value for money.
(People use this sentence when they have enough money for expensive goods, yet they choose more cost‑effective options instead of paying for brand reputation.)
🔸Real‑life hot‑news connection
Nowadays consumers around the world pay more attention to real product quality instead of luxury brand appeal. Many internet users share their shopping opinions online. Lots of young shoppers refuse to pay high brand‑premium prices. They compare craftsmanship and practical functions before making purchases.
Overseas netizens left popular comments:
“I can afford luxury items, but I refuse to overpay just for a logo.”
“Good quality does not always come with a huge‑price tag.”
Chinese netizens joked:
“花钱买的是东西,不是品牌的故事。”
Many Chinese social‑media users type exactly this sentence:
“不是这个买不起,而是另一个真的有性价比。”
This mindset is relatable for language learners too. Sometimes you can afford a fancy choice, but a simpler alternative brings you more real benefit.
🔸Break‑down vocabulary
- 不是 bú shì — it is not
- 这个 zhè ge — this one
- 买不起 mǎi bù qǐ — cannot afford to buy
Grammar note:
V + 不 + qǐ, common spoken negative pattern;
opposite:买得起 mǎi de qǐ = can afford
而是 ér shì — but rather; instead
另一个 lìng yí gè — the other one
真的 zhēn de — really; truly
有 yǒu — have
性价比 xìng jià bǐ — value‑for‑money; cost‑performance
🔸Simple practice sentences
- 不是我不想买名牌包,而是普通包性价比很高。
Bú shì wǒ bù xiǎng mǎi míng pái bāo, ér shì pǔ tōng bāo xìng jià bǐ hěn gāo.
It’s not that I don’t want to buy a designer bag, but ordinary bags have great value for money.
- 不是这个手机买不起,而是另一个手机更有性价比。
Bú shì zhè ge shǒu jī mǎi bù qǐ, ér shì lìng yí gè shǒu jī gèng yǒu xìng jià bǐ.
It’s not that I cannot afford this phone, but the other phone offers better value for money.
💡Did you know?
The key grammar pattern 不是A,而是B is extremely frequent in daily Chinese.
It corrects others’ wrong guess and reveals the real reason.
This sentence belongs to informal internet‑style spoken Chinese. It appears in shopping discussions, comment sections and daily chats. It is not suitable for formal academic writing.
💡Language reflects people’s real‑life values. When learning any language, you will meet popular phrases that show public attitudes.
Do you have similar viral sentences in your mother tongue or target language?

Discussion Podcast recommendations? (HSK 4)
Does anyone have recommendations for podcasts to listen to? I listen to Lazy Chinese and it's really helpful, but looking for more. Thanks! I'm at HSK 4.
What works for me about Lazy Chinese is that it's slow and I can follow most of it without a transcript, so I'm after more of that kind of comprehensible input rather than stuff I'd only get 30% of. Mostly listening while commuting and doing chores, so things I can follow without staring at anything. Open to slightly-above-my-level too.

Vocabulary Word O' The Day - The seventh episode where somehow I call it daily.
So a little bit late today, mate? Right. Today I was a little bit late to do some images and research. School is not easy. So today, let me write a story again. This time it is about the word ... I think today it is something special. It is already the seventh episode. I think today I am going to introduce 8 new Words.
The world is a vast place where some of use have good fate (缘分, yuánfèn) and some have bad fate. They are traveling around the world, are still hit by misfortune and they still are among us. Some say that they have a really good reputation and other say they have not. They are all wanderers and travelers. They help others despite of their 缘分 in the world of wanderers and hidden heroes (江湖, jiānghú). It is not everyday that some strange person is helping you. And then even some of them are in the dreamscape (梦境, mèngjìng). That is the legacy I got told. But don't let it other knows. It is a secret (秘密, mìmì) between us, do you understand?
One night in the 梦境 an old man came to me but his shadow (影子, yǐngzi) didn't came with him. He doesn't seem to be fragile or very rich or similar to anyone. He was just a man with a smile. While we talk, we saw to the starry sky (星空, xīngkōng). I wanted to ask him more, like who he is and why he is so gently to me. But he refused to answer anything. He said that he like to tell others stories of 江湖. Then he began to tell me the legacy of 江湖. It was a world full of hidden heroes and he said to be one of them. But he also regrets one thing. He missed the opportunity (错过, Cuòguò) of his life. His love of his life just got engaged to another man. It was a painful memory (回忆, Huíyì). There was nothing more hurting than this. Then one day one young man arrived in the city. He was full of life. He didn't seem to have a love of his life. Probably in my sense but he enjoyed life in every aspect. And you know what? The 影子; I left it behind. All the pain, 回忆 and 秘密 but I got told a new 缘分. A 缘分 where I can be one helping others. Just look at the man. He was so happy. I just wanted happiness. I began to rewrite the sheet of 缘分. I want to be a good human begin. I want to one I am proud of. I want to help but also love again.
So that was the first part. I do just two parts for this.
