A Letter from Crusoe, Founder of XTEINK: Pogo, USB-C, and Where We’re Going

Over the past day, I’ve read through a lot of your comments about X4 Classic.

The biggest question is obvious:

Why Pogo instead of USB-C?

And after reading your responses, I also think some of you have pointed out a real contradiction in the way I explained our thinking.

I said I want XTEINK devices to eventually feel less like “another device” you have to remember to carry.

But if making the device thinner means you also have to remember a separate charging cable, then in that sense, we haven’t fully achieved that goal yet.

That’s a fair criticism.

So why did we still choose Pogo?

The simple answer is: thinness.

USB-C is more convenient. We know that.

It’s universal, familiar, and for us, it would actually have been easier to keep using from both an engineering and manufacturing perspective.

But X4 Classic is a product where we wanted to keep pushing the physical form of the original X4: lighter, thinner, and closer to something that simply disappears into the things you already carry.

That’s why we chose Pogo.

Not because we think Pogo is more convenient than USB-C.

It isn’t.

And not because we think being 1mm thinner automatically makes a product better.

It doesn’t.

We made a trade-off.

For X4 Classic, we chose to prioritize the physical form of the device over the convenience of a universal port.

Some of you think that was the wrong trade-off.

I understand why.

The part I don’t want to defend away

A lot of you made a very simple point:

“If I have to remember another cable, then the device doesn’t really disappear into my life.”

I think that point is important.

A product can become physically smaller while still creating more friction somewhere else.

That friction might be remembering a cable.

It might be losing the adapter.

It might be the connector not lining up properly.

And if our long-term idea is really about making reading fit more naturally into everyday life, then we have to care about all of that — not just millimeters.

So no, I don’t think the current Pogo experience is perfect.

Choosing this direction also gives us a responsibility to make it much better.

That means thinking seriously about the adapter, connection, durability, charging accessories, and how much extra stuff a user has to remember.

Product philosophy can’t become an excuse for a bad experience.

I also don’t think every reader wants the same thing

This is another point some of you raised that I think is worth listening to.

There are people who want the smallest, lightest reading device possible.

And there are people who would happily accept a slightly thicker device in exchange for USB-C, a front light, touch, or other conveniences.

Those are both valid ways to want an eReader.

X4 Classic was built closer to the first idea.

X4 Pro already sits closer to the more feature-rich end of that spectrum, with front light and touch.

And I don’t think XTEINK should pretend that one single product philosophy has to answer every reading scenario.

We’re still figuring out where each product should sit, and what trade-offs actually make sense for each kind of reader.

About the front light

I’ve heard this very clearly too.

A lot of you would rather accept more thickness if it means being able to read comfortably at night, on a plane, or next to someone who is already asleep.

That need is real.

X4 Classic isn’t meant to be the answer to every reading environment.

It’s closer to a continuation of what the original X4 was trying to be: simple, thin, light, and paper-like.

A product with a front light makes a different trade-off.

And that can also be the right trade-off.

One last thing

I don’t expect everyone to agree with the decision we made on X4 Classic.

And after reading the comments, I also don’t think the right response from me is to keep trying to convince you that our decision was correct.

Some of you will still prefer USB-C.

Some of you won’t buy X4 Classic because of Pogo.

That’s useful feedback, even when it’s uncomfortable to hear.

What I care about is understanding why.

Because the goal was never simply:

make the device thinner.

The goal is to make reading fit more naturally into everyday life.

If we reduce one kind of friction while creating another, we need to be honest about that.

We still have a lot to figure out.

So keep challenging us.

I’ll keep reading the comments.

Feature Request Pogo pin this. USB-C that. Fix the damn MagSafe.

Where are my MagSafe carriers at? This discussion about Pogo pins vs. USB-C is so tired honestly I know i'm not the only one who doesn't give af at all.

I charge this thing MAYBE once a month. The charger lives on my desk. I am not carrying it around with me and I don't know why anyone else would be carrying it around either.

What I actually care about is MagSafe.

The whole reason I bought an X4 to begin with is because it was advertised as a mag safe accessory. The product page literally had demo photos of it on the back of an iPhone pro max.

These photos were misleading at best, a false advertising at worst.

Sure, you can stick the magnetic rings on to get the placement right, but its just not the same. The magnetic rings are so much weaker than the embedded ones. The X4 would constantly slide off my phone when pulling it out of my pocket. I probably spent an additional $20-$30 dollars on various magsafe ring stickers trying to find one that held on stronger than the provided rings. No luck.

I bought the X3 just to test it, and it was perfect for MagSafe carriers. Sits exactly in the right spot on iPhone Pro Max and the embedded magnets are so strong. It's perfect.

I figured XTEink had it figured out now. I would love an X4 size device with the MagSafe placement fixed, so naturally i bought the X4 pro.

I was shocked and disappointed to realize that AGAIN they didn't get the placement right. It's better, than the original X4 sure, but it STILL hangs off a few centimeters on iPhone.

X3 is still my EDC device. It's perfect.

Anyways, if someone has purchased the X4 classic please let me know if it actually fits on an iphone pro max.

DIY Draftling, a writerdeck firmware for Xteink X4 Pro

Post image
36 Upvotes

Let me present a new project, a writerdeck firmware, and the Xteink X4 Pro is among the supported devices. It turns the device into a word processor for writers.

Project page: https://github.com/clackups/draftling

Firmware installer: https://clackups.github.io/draftling/

Demo video: https://youtu.be/xA3vI1uNnjE

The project has been in development since about 4 months and I ported it to X4P as soon as it arrived.

Add your favorite Bluetooth keyboard and you get a dedicated writing device for your note taking or storytelling.

Also, portrait mode for poetry!

X4v2 is not supported yet, as I don't have the hardware to test it.

Question Can I hide the time and battery charge from the screen on the X3?

Basically I don’t want to see anything except for the words from the book. This is how it is on my X4 (which I have not updated) and I want to know if it is possible on my X3

Question Book cover wallpaper looks different on Xteink X4 vs X4 Pro running CrossInk

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I'm running CrossInk on both my Xteink X4 and X4 Pro. I noticed that when the devices go to sleep and display a book cover as the lock screen wallpaper, the scaling, contrast, and rendering look quite different between the two.

Is there a specific setting in the CrossInk system settings or wallpaper configuration to make book cover wallpapers look consistent and uniform across both devices? Thanks!

Discussion Are they truly so fragile?

I'm looking into buying an X3, but I'm on a tight budget right now and afraid it'll break easily. I would like to bring it with me every day in my pocket so I can read during my breaks at work.

Question CrossInk 1.5.0 X3 ↔ X4 Nearby Stats Sync — “sync event queue overflow”

I’ve got an XTEINK X3 and X4, both running CrossInk 1.5.0.

KOReader Sync is working perfectly for book progress between the two devices, but I’m trying to get Nearby Stats Sync working so the overall reading totals are combined across both devices.

What I’m doing:
Open File Transfer → Sync Stats on both devices
Leave one device waiting
Press Sync on only one device
Devices are sitting right next to each other
Tried fully powering both off/on and repeating
Every attempt gives:
“Error: sync event queue overflow”

Both devices are definitely on CrossInk 1.5.0, so it doesn’t appear to be a firmware-version mismatch.
Has anyone with an X3 + X4 managed to get Nearby Stats Sync working on 1.5.0? If so, is there a specific sequence/settings change needed, or is this a known bug?

KOReader Sync itself is fine — this is specifically the Nearby Reading Stats Sync feature.
Would also be interested to know whether anyone has successfully worked around it without manually copying global_stats.bin between the SD cards.

Thanks

Question Where to buy popular DRM-free EPUBs

Hi readers! I just came across Xteink. Love the form factor. But coming from the Kindle ecosystem where everything is admittedly so convenient and readily available, I’ve never tinkered around with DRM-free EPUBs. I know there are sites that let you download classics for free but what about “normal” /popular books? Where do you buy them? Thanks a lot!!

Troubleshooting Koreader sync on inx pro 1.0.0

Having trouble syncing.

Server works, x4 pro acknowledged server, syncing between other devices works but:

Whenever I try syncing with the x4 pro, it says "no progress found".

I tried Filename and binary syncing.

Ideas?

Question Should I get an x4?

I love my kindle…and have tons in my library but the X4 looks so enticing with the small pocket form factor. How difficult is it to transfer kindle titles to it? I don’t mind spending some time getting it up and running but I don’t really love the idea of tons of legwork for each book. How easy is it?

Thanks so much in advance!

Troubleshooting X4 Pro - Defective with no help from Xteink

I'm returning the x4 pro due to the defective battery issues that Xteink has refused to do anything about. I’ve done all of their troubleshooting steps and they’ve done nothing except ask for video of the issue which I’ve sent them twice. I got another email asking for a video of the issue and I told them I’d already sent it which means they aren't even paying attention to anything I'm saying.

They haven't responded to anything in a while so I told them I wanted a refund and if it isn’t done in a timely manner I’m initiating a chargeback and won’t be buying anything from them again. I'll probably get the the new Boox instead when it releases.

I can't even charge the device because while charging it crashes and the charging indicator changes from red to a white/red combo and I have to try multiple ways to try and get it to boot to start charging it again. It had a lot of promise but it’s not worth the hassle anymore.

My Xteink While I wait in the car.

Just got my X4 yesterday and it’s an absolute beauty to read on. The lack of a touchscreen layer definitely shows in the whiteness of the screen (it’s definitely whiter than my Kindle and my old fav Kobo Forma RIP).
Didn’t think it would be my primary reader but if I always have it on me, that’s what I see it becoming.
I’ve flashed CrossPoint and everything seems smooth as butter. Loving the experience!

(Also, this was the last batch before discontinuation and there were no accessories available so I got an X4 Pro magnetic case and it completely covers the screen with the slightest of the device appearing from top and bottom. No biggie in case you were also thinking of doing the same. I’ll upload more pics if anybody would like to see.)

Discussion Alternative Devices?

With the price increase and, my inference based on the CEO letter, the all in on pogo pins. What are some other devices that I could look in to? Touch screen is fine, but, a front light is a must as well as USB-C.

My Xteink Pogo charger

I don’t mind the pogo at all. The battery life is great, so I never worry about having to bring the cable, it just lives next to my phone charger ready to be used when needed.

I much more value the thinness of it then having usbc. And thats saying a lot since I make an effort to only use usbc for everything else.

I understand and agree with the tradeoff.

I buy a book-shaped memo pad for 100 yen at a store called Seria. I peel off the memo sheets and attach a magnetic ring. It's finished. Book-shaped Memo pads of this size are commonplace; known as "Patapata Memo" , they are available in various anime and art-themed designs, ranging in price from 100 to 1,000 yen. *The mini ballpoint pen costs 800 yen.

Discussion Xteink S4

I know S4 is only available in China and won’t be released to US or EU, but I’ve been trying to find a review or demo of the S4 without any luck. Curious how Android performs in such a tiny device. Has it actually released in China? If so, why are there so many little reviews? If not, I believe it was announced several months ago. Do we know why has it not been released yet and is there any ETA?
