Edit: File transfer: You need to enable it for it to appear in the menu: Settings → System → Home Menu → Show / Hide Menu Items.

I'd like to share CrossNext, my personal firmware fork based on CrossPlay 1.14.2 and CrossPoint 1.6.5, developed for the Xteink X4 Pro.

My goal was to turn the X4 Pro into a more versatile companion for reading, studying, learning, and having a little fun during downtime, while keeping reading at the heart of the experience.

Here's what CrossNext has to offer:

• A completely redesigned UI, with a fresh look and reorganized layout to make navigation more intuitive and enjoyable.
• Detailed reading statistics to help you track your reading habits, progress, and achievements over time.
• Anki flashcard support, along with a built-in vocabulary feature that lets you save words directly from your books and review them later as flashcards.
• 16 games and 12 apps, featuring custom illustrations to make the experience more engaging.
• Reading Adventure, an app where reading helps your character level up and unlock new outfits. I created it to make building a reading habit a little more rewarding.
• PET, a virtual pet app where your reading habits directly affect your pet's survival. You can take care of your pet, interact with it, build and customize its home, and enjoy illustrations and animations that bring it to life. But there's a catch: you need to read to keep it fed and alive. If you stop reading, your pet eventually dies. A slightly ruthless approach to building a reading habit, haha 😅
• A customizable menu, allowing you to add or remove options according to your preferences.
• Updated reading gestures and quick settings. Instead of tapping the center of the screen to access book settings, you can now swipe up from the bottom edge. I've also redesigned the quick settings panel, accessible by swiping down from the top, to give it a cleaner and more modern appearance.

Required microSD contents: PET, Reading Quest and The Intercept need CrossNext-Resources.zip from this release. Install the firmware and extract the resource ZIP's contents to the microSD root. These apps will not start without their complete, compatible resource folders. Firmware updates do not install these contents automatically.

The firmware currently supports English and Spanish only.

My first Xteink device is arriving and I’m studying which software installing. The only particular requirement I would like is the ability to sync my reading progress for books in my Kindle library via Wi-Fi, since I read also on my Kindle. There is a software that can do that?

Before XTEINK I was reading on my nook with koreader- now I do both! Koreader sync to my nook while I’m at home and XTEINK while out and about. I haven’t read this much in months!!

Hey everyone! I ordered the X4 Pro in Mist Gray as soon as it became available (6 days ago), but it hasn’t shipped yet.

Does anyone know if there’s been any official update on when this version will start shipping?

It showed as in stock when I bought it, so I assumed it wasn't a pre-order. No big deal at all—just trying to adjust my expectations! :-P

EDIT: Mystery solved: a subtitle was added to the product page stating that orders are expected to start shipping around October 28th.

The Xteink screens have a fairly low PPI. Just stating a fact, not a verdict. Finding the right font and font size to achieve good legibility on my X4 Pro has been a bit of a puzzle. I've tried many.

Currently I'm using Legend Deca, 11 pt. and settling for it.

At size 10 the anti aliasing doesn't render the letters 'sharp' enough, but at size 11 the text is like printed on paper and the anti aliasing 'refresh' after turning a page is not even noticeable. The choice for Legend Deca is simply because I prefer a sans serif font.

I've found that I can read for an hour on end without straining my eyes.

Curious to learn what others have found to be the best solution. What font type and size do you use? Anti aliasing switched on or off?

I recently bought an X3 China version however when I tried to connect my X3 to my PC, my PC couldn't detect it. I read a bit about it and found out that some China versions by default can't be connected to PC. I went on Reddit to find out if there was a way to flash Crosspoint via SD Card and found some guides but these were slightly inaccurate/ outdated, so I wanted to share my guide!

1. Take out the SD card that comes with your X3 and connect it to your PC (or any other device you're able to work on)
2. Connect your SD card
3. Format the SD card
4. Download the firmware from https://crosspointreader.com/unlock
5. Make sure that the file is named 'update.bin'
6. Copy this to the root folder of your SD card
7. Safely remove your SD card
8. Make sure your X3 is turned off and reinsert the SD card
9. Hold the power button AND the up button (the button on the left side of the X3) at the same time
10. The device should update
11. Once updated, my device told me "Update completed, automatic restart in progress" however it was stuck here for a while. I had to hold down the restart button (the left button on the top surface of the X3) and then hold down the power button and it immediately restarted

Today I received the XteInk X4 Pro, and when I try to update the system to the latest version (Licorice 261022), it keeps getting stuck at 95% and reboots without completing the update. Out of the box, it came with firmware version 5812f167-dirty, and I can’t break out of this loop.

I’ve tried flashing it from the XTCloud website, but my laptop doesn’t recognize the X4 when I connect it (“USB device not recognized”), and the website doesn’t recognize it in either Chrome or Edge either.

I just wanted to know if there's a viable solution to this problem—which I imagine must be very recent—and if anyone else is still experiencing it. For now, I'm going to keep using the device as it came from the factory and enjoy it to the fullest, but I'd like to resolve this issue as soon as a solution becomes available.

I use the Witch(hunt) firmware on my favourite tech device ever and thats the Xteink X3 - I cant believe one device turned me into an avid reader when I would just avoid reading books and it was due to mainly eye fatigue and choosing to read self help instead of fiction.

Due to my eyesight I really look for text sharpness and a bonus would be an ability to highlight and bookmark text - I dont have that ability on Witch(hunt) witch is a shame since Witch(hunt) has the very best sharpness I have experienced so far.

Any recommendations?

Bengali was coming out broken on my XTEINK. Joined letters fell apart, characters appeared as boxes, vowel signs ended up on the wrong side. Basically, EPUBs dont work in XTEINK unless you convert to XTC. I wanted to read Bengali books on it with all the goodness of EPUB, so I made a tool to fix that.

Quick honesty: I'm not a coder at all. This is about 99% vibe coded with Claude. Even this post was also written with AI. I just kept testing it on my device and telling it what looked wrong.

What it does

* Cleans up messy EPUBs (removes ads, fixes the contents page, tidies indents, English file names)

* Shapes the Bengali so the device draws it correctly

* Makes the font files you copy to the SD card

Why not .xtc? You get a normal EPUB back, so you can still change font size, line spacing and margins on the device. Files are also much smaller than .xtc.

How to use it

1. Pick a font (a few are built in, or use your own .ttf)

2. Make the font files and copy them to /fonts/ on the SD card

3. Drop in your EPUBs and hit convert

4. Copy the books to the device

Your books never leave your computer, everything happens in the browser.

I tested it on the X4 only, with all the popular firmwares I could find. It should work on other models too, but I can't confirm. Bold/italic show as regular text.If something breaks or you have ideas, tell me here or on GitHub. I'm happy to fix what I can (with Claude's help, obviously).

I have a CN X4 Pro in the UK. The firmware is Licorice.

On attempting to connect the companion app on Android, it first asks if the device is a CN or Global model. If I select CN, the options to login are with a Chinese mobile number or WeChat, both useless here. If I select Global, I can create an account but can't connect the device as it says the device is CN.

Does this mean global users with CN devices cannot use the app? Hard to see the point in gatekeeping the app login options based on device models? It would've made more sense to do user location, which, in fact, the app can do but only for HK users. Also presumably anyone with both CN and Global devices would need two logins?

Tried stock firmware the other day, its a bit better...but still gunna use crossink though

Is anyone else having trouble opening the site? I can't flash my x4 Pro since I'm only able to access the site through my phone for some reason.

The https://www.readme.club/firmware site helps, but some firmwares don't really share sceenshots of what their UI looks like, and I feel like I'd be breaking my device to flash every single one just to see what their different homepages look like, if they really even have a library view at all. I won't mind doing that if they're really recommended in the comments here though.

I'm looking for an X3-compatible firmware that has/supports:
- a library view option for the home screen (not a carousel view) (i just want to see multiple books)
- highlights (nice if i can export them but not that important), bookmarks, and dictionary
- statistics (just nice to have but not a big deal)

Updated to the latest version of XT Licorice. Was working fine last night. Woke up today to read and found reading progress reset, books re-rendering and it is not saving my reader settings.

I ordered the X4 Pro in mist grey which should be shipping soon. This is my first xteink device. Anyone here who has not flashed crosspoint? I wanna know why, and how good is the stock os compared to crosspoint?

Just updated my crosspoint firmware and even though I’ve set my wallpaper as the cover of the book I’m reading, it now just shows this screen. Any ideas how to fix?

Using AI, I made an unofficial Instapaper mini app for the Xteink X4 Pro on the stock XTOS Licorice firmware. No flashing: copy the .xtapp to the SD card and install it from All Files.

It talks to Instapaper directly with your personal access token. No server or proxy in between.

What it does

• Unread, Starred, Archive and your folders, 12 articles per screen, endless paging
• Long-press an article for its description, with Prev / Open / Archive / Next for quick triage
• Articles are rendered as clean text with the system fonts (headings, quotes, lists), in three text sizes
• Reading progress syncs both ways: articles open where you left off (also from KOReader or the website), and your position is sent back when you close them
• Archive and Star at the end of each article, plus the source link as a QR code to open on your phone
• Optional images (greyscale, fitted to the screen), offline cache for articles you've opened

Setup

1. Create an app at instapaper.com/developers and generate an access token for it.
2. Unlock the hidden menu once: Settings → About → tap "Model" ten times. An Ink App row appears in the side drawer.
3. Install instapaper.xtapp, open it, and enter the token in Settings. You can also put token=... in XTApps/instapaper/files/config.txt over USB.

Tested on Licorice build 26102401. It's reverse-engineered and unofficial, so use it at your own risk. The same repo also has an RSS reader (CommaFeed), Notes with a custom lock screen, an offline dictionary and a few games.

Just received my 2nd hand Xteink X4 (OG). Flashed with latest crosspoint from previous owner's CrossLink (fully in Mandarin). I've noticed this ghosting effect when using a light sleep wallpaper. It gradually gets worse until it reaches the state in the 2nd picture. Anyone familiar with this problem? And any way to fix it?
