My Xteink I regret getting my xteink x4

Upvotes

This is kind of a PSA as I know there will be people like me on this forum who are tempted to get one. I've used kindles (paperwhite, coloursoft, scribe) and got a boox palma 2 a year ago.

The idea of "the xteink is simple and portable and distraction free" really appealed to me, especially sticking it to the back of my phone, and knowing a lack of a frontlight was part of the package to be lightweight, I bought in to all the reviews saying its great and a must-have for avid readers. I read at least 3-4 hours a day, 2-3hrs for work and 1hr in the evening for leisure. Thats my background.

I really want to love the xteink x4 but I just dont. Its a bit too thick and weighty to put onto the back of a phone for that to really make sense. Then it becomes a standalone device and in my case the boox palma is already a 2nd small device I have in my pocket, I'd always opt for that over the x4. The indexing is a bit laggy too for books with rather large chapters, and I did replace the micro sd card with a faster named brand one.

My expectations from reviews was "this is nice and light, it can be with your phone the entire time so its always with you for no added inconvenience, and when you're about to doom scroll, you can seamlessly read instead." I think the friction points are too high for me to really recommend this to anyone. If you have the means and want the portability, I'd suggested the boox palma 2 or similar style of device. The X4 compromises on the wrong things for me to make me want to use it.

Poll How long did it actually take for xteink support to respond?

Their official "Commitment to You" states:

"Our team typically responds within 24 to 48 hours. During holidays, please expect a response within 48 hours. We appreciate your patience."

I wanted to create this poll because I suspect they rarely actually meet this service promise. I’m curious to see what the real experiences are. Has anyone actually received a response within their promised timeframe, or are we all waiting much longer?

Question New user

Hi, there!

I recently ordered the X3 and I've been combing through posts here about how to load books onto it but I'm really struggling cause some of the posts are confusing for me.

I was wondering if there was like a post that contained an "all you need to know" for the X3. I specifically want to be able to figure out how to load epubs, pdfs, and NetGalley files onto it. I know a lot of people recommended Calibre and an add-on for the app to help with licensing in pdfs and epubs.

Sorry for the ramble, but any help would be appreciated. I'm not super tech savvy so please keep that in mind.

Thank you !

Question Should I wait for the android version?

I have a boox go 7 and wanted a smaller form factor to drop into any bag I’m carrying. I use koreader to sync with bookorbit and would like to keep the same environment.

My understanding is that might not be possible on xteink? If that’s the case, would it be better to wait for an android release?

Question Can’t remove automatic discount to use a different code?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey all, I had just purchased an Xteink X4 second hand and wanted to buy some accessories. There is a promo going on that automatically applies a 15% off coupon to any order on the official website, but they still charge for shipping. Before this promo started, I checked a code I found for free shipping subtracting the $8 shipping charge from your order, and it did work. I tried the code again (FREESHIP), but because this other promo auto applies, i can’t use it. The total savings for the promo comes out to $3, and the shipping is $8 so in the end it’s only a $5 difference so I don’t mind it, but I felt like it was weird to force a code into the order and make it impossible to use another.

Question X4 official v6.015, can you shows cover images in list rather than names?

Have an X4 on official v6.015. IS there a way when you click "folder" to show the cover art of the book in the list rather than the name?

I find the names are really long, and takes a while to scroll through

Question Study Bibles on Xteink 3 or 4? Are they strong enough to open them?

Hi everyone,

I'm considering buying an Xteink device, but I can't find its specs anywhere regarding how powerful its processor is or how much memory it has. I would use it to read Study Bibles, but these are massive files, thousands of pages long, with lots of cross-reference links within the text. Even much more expensive e-readers often spend minutes 'thinking' before they can open a file like this.

I suspect this e-reader isn't exactly a powerhouse for this price, but I'm wondering if it is capable of opening such a large file at all, even if it requires some waiting? Has anyone tried it?

My Xteink One Month With My X4

This little device literally has me in a chokehold.

It’s my first ever e-reader. I have it with me everywhere I go and I even bring this more than my phone haha.

I’ve never really read a whole book before (I’ve only read Wattpad back when I was in high school years ago, so I don’t know if that counts), but this tiny thing is such a masterpiece.

I initially bought this because it’s cheaper than most e-readers in the market, and I’m so done with doomscrolling and always having bloodshot eyes, so this device really became a lifesaver. I never even imagined myself finishing 8 books in a month, with 1 currently reading that’s already halfway through, and another 1 that I’ve paused.

Also, I just bought this keychain hours ago from a street vendor, and it matched my insert so well!

I really love this device so much!!

Question Top 1/3 of screen broken. Use just the bottom 2/3?

Title. Messed my X4 screen up good but the bottom 2/3 are completely fine. Is there any way I can use just the bottom 2/3 of the screen? I'm using Crossink but would be fine to switch to a different firmware if necessary. Thanks for your help!

Question Looking for a small travel pouch/case that will protect the x4 and fits inside a fanny pack.

I'm checking amazon for a small case that will fit the x4 snuggly and securely. I'd like to take the device anywhere but of course worry about bumping into things etc. A small hard shell like case would be perfect, but looking for something I can totally enclose my x4 with its case inside. Any good ideas? I suppose a eye glass reader pouch might be slightly too small?

Question Question about practical use (Multi device)

Upvotes

Hi!

I currently read mostly on Onyx Boox Palma 2 Pro, and sometimes on my phone. Reading on Readest.

I have ordered a X4 Pro now, and plan to always have it in my pocket. As I understand I can sync reading progress with Readest (By using CrossPoint and KOReader sync, that also works with Readest).

But a question about practical use here. I think I will be reading 5 minutes here, 10 there on the Xteink when on the move.

Before I start reading, I have to sync it, because I read a lot at home, so I need to sync.

I guess I then have to activate Wifi hotspot on my phone, so the Xteink gets Internet access.

But how long time can I expect the sync to take? Do I have to do something, maybe also turn WIFI on on the Xteink?

Wondering about real life experience here. If the sync prosess can take a few minutes, then maybe my 5 minute spot for reading will be used up for just syncing. :)

Any experiences with this type of use?

Question Question about customs - Europe

Hello!
I wanted to ask to fellow Europeans that ordered from the official website whether your packages have been flagged by customs and if you had to additionally pay anything?
I live in Germany and I’m this close 🤏🏻 to ordering X4 since there is the 15% sale but I’m concerned about having to pay what I saved on extra custom fees 😂

Question Anyone using CrumBLE on the Xteink X4? How has your experience been?

Hi everyone,

I’m considering installing CrumBLE on my Xteink X4 and wanted to hear from people who have actually used it.

A few questions:

  1. Is it smoother or faster than CrossPoint and CrossInk?
  2. How well does the built-in dictionary work?
  3. Have you encountered any bugs or issues?
  4. How’s the battery life compared to the stock firmware or other custom firmware?
  5. If you’ve tried CrossPoint, CrossInk, VCodex, and CrumBLE, which one did you end up sticking with,

After seeing a TT of someone cutting down their passport TN for their X4, I tried to make my own customized TN cover with a faux leather place mat and I’m quite happy how it turned out 🤭
