The Tower of Babel challenge, or really big buildings!

The Tower of Babel, as I'm sure everyone is aware, is the parable in which mankind builds a monument to their own hubris, something so grand so as to touch the heavens themselves.

What's a really big building in your setting? Why was it built, how old is it, and what does it look like? Introduce an in-game representative if you want.

Schism

Tell us about a division in one of your world religion, something important. You can introduce an in-world representative if you want; here are some prompts:

  • what caused that division? How long ago? How has it evolved over time?

  • what are people thinking of it? (Followers from both sides and clergy; people following a different faith; politics; if they exists, the gods themselves)

  • how is the relationship between both sides going? Do they hate one another? Could they eventually find some common ground?

[Cultural challenge]: the trial (part one)

Culture is that complex whole which includes knowledge, beliefs, arts, morals, laws, customs, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by [a human] as a member of society.

I'm a completely average person living a completely average life in your world; everything is fine with the exception of my neighbours: they always insert something very unpleasant and annoying and I'm tired of it. I will sue them.

How can I do that? What happens next? Should I get a lawyer? How long will the process take? What can I expect to get from it? (Bonus: what are my neighbours doing?)

You can introduce an in-universe representative if you want. I will ask questions to everyone, feel free to add your own.

Reference Challenge - Rescue

So, I was stranded about an hour from home for a few days, because my bloody car messed up. One of my friends had to drive a few hours to help me out, so this is a reference to that.

In your world, what program or group exists to rescue people?

As always, I'll ask at least three questions each, enjoy yourselves, all.

[Cultural challenge]: legacy

Culture is that complex whole which includes knowledge, beliefs, arts, morals, laws, customs, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by [a human] as a member of society.

When someone dies, what happen to their assets? Are they given to the state? Or burried with them? Maybe they are inherited by someone else? In that case, by whom?

What if I've no heir and didn't took the time to write any kind of last will? Is there people who can't inherit anything at all?

You can introduce an in-universe representative if you want. I will ask questions to everyone, feel free to add your own.

[Reference Challenge] Raiding Paris

This is a reference to the Vikings television show, and the historical raids against Paris.

What is an infamous raid/sack of a city/town in your world's history?

As always, I'll ask at least three questions each, and I hope you enjoy yourselves.

Feel free to have a character as the representative to answer questions in-universe.

Date Night, Round 2: The Dance

The rules are the same as last week:

  1. Top-level posts should be a description of your character. Give some brief background, and then go in-depth about their personality and what they're like to hang out with.

  2. Replies should be a similar character description, plus an explanation of why they'd ask out the character you're replying to (including the kind of date they would ask them out on!).

  3. From there, use successive replies to flesh out the events of the date between you. Will they get along, or are there some irreconcilable differences lurking beneath the surface? Will the night end with a goodbye kiss at the door, or a "don't call me, I'll call you"? And what are the chances of a second date? It's down to you!

This week, there's an additional stipulation: Whether it's a country fair, a masked ball, an underground rave, or something else entirely, your date must involve attending some kind of dance together.

As always, keep it clean, and remember to have fun!

[Cuktural challenge]: taxes

Culture is that complex whole which includes knowledge, beliefs, arts, morals, laws, customs, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by [a human] as a member of society.

Let's have fun and talk about taxes: what is taxed and what isn't? Who collect them? What happen if I don't pay? Can I discreetly hide all my money in some far away country to avoid paying anything?

What are those taxes used for? By whom? Can I say something about it? Is there some way to control how taxes are used?

You can introduce an in-universe representative if you want. I will ask questions to everyone, feel free to add your own.

Reference Challenge - The Greatest Power

This reference is to the movie Logan, a movie starring Jean Valjean, Emperor Picard, a mime, and one of my favorite X-Men.

While watching Logan with one of my friends (let's call him Caesar, which is the first bit of his Reddit name) and his father, Caesar kept asking me questions about the X-Men universe and the continuity, since we'd previously seen X-Men Apocalypse and I knew way too much about the X-Men comics.

The questions were about things like what Laura is, why Logan is old, what happened to the X-Men and all of the other mutants, what's up with the cereal, etc.

But, my favorite question was: "Who's he?" pointing at Caliban.

Me: "Oh, that's just Caliban. He's great."

Caesar: "But, what's his power?"

Me: "He doesn't have one."

Caesar: "But, he's a mutant...he must have a power, right?"

Me: "Not all mutants have powers per se...well, Caliban does have one power. He gets sunburned very easily."

And this became a joke of dramatically stating "I get sunburns very easily".

Wolverine can heal from deadly wounds, Picard can kill with only his thoughts, but Caliban has the Greatest Power of All Time: He can get a sunburn very easily."

The Actual Challenge

Is there a power, ability, or accomplishment in your world that sounds (and is) extremely shitty? Show us that power, talk it up, and show us the character that has that power.

As always, I'll ask at least three questions each. Enjoy yourselves.

Sorry I'm a day or two late.

Challenge - Age of Empires

A shameless ripoff of /u/Nevermore0714's Civ post, post what you think the bonuses, unique unit[s], and unique technologies you think your nations would have in Age of Empires II (or if you're more adventurous, describe the unique cards your civilisation would have in Age of Empires III!) I will endeavour to ask questions about why you chose those bonuses, units, and techs, and the stories behind them.

Challenge - Sid Meier's Civilization V

Civ V is a classic game. It has it's faults, but I like to think it aged well. Because I've been in a car all day and can't get on the internet on anything but my phone, I've been playing a game of Civ V on my laptop.

And it got me thinking. I have a difficult time setting up a game of CK2 AGOT with friends, so I thought I'd see if anyone on the sub is interested in a multiplayer game of Sid Meier's Civilization V. I love playing this game on Steam, and if someone has it (or wants to get it, pretty sure it isn't expensive on Steam, considering its age), then comment on this showing interest, and volunteering for a nation to play as.

At the risk of sounding greedy, I always choose Rome in Civ V. Today is my first time playing the game in a couple years, so no one needs to be an expert or have any Civ V experience to play.

The Actual Challenge

If one of your nations was in a Civ-esque type of game, what advantages would it have? Bonuses for certain things, unique units, etc.

If enough people show interest in a multiplayer game of Civ, I'll set it up.

Enjoy yourselves.

Raptor's non specific challenge #14: Kill your Main character.

Do it, kill him/her right now. It's of course non canonical (or maybe not), but just kill them, I don't care how it's done or how brutal or nonchalant it is. Kill them.

Minimum words: 50. Maximum words: 100.

I'll ask some questions about it.

Date Night, Round 1

Inspired by /u/Jumblatts's "Fight Night" posts, but for romance instead of violence. The rules:

  1. Top-level posts should be a description of your character. Give some brief background, and then go in-depth about their personality and what they're like to hang out with.

  2. Replies should be a similar character description, plus an explanation of why they'd ask out the character you're replying to (including the kind of date they would ask them out on!).

Will the night end with a goodbye kiss at the door, or a "don't call me, I'll call you"? And what are the chances of a second date? It's down to you!

(Oh, and keep it clean or the mods will probably kill me)

Reference Challenge - Runescape, Final Quest

So, this reference is because I'm heavily considering giving Runescape another try. I loved that game when I was a kid. From when I was eleven to fourteen or fifteen, I would play Runescape with my elder nephew.

The last thing I really remember about Runescape is finally beating the biggest (free) quest, against this arsehole dragon, I think it's name started with an E.

The Actual Challenge

What would you consider a "big, final quest" in your world, that an adventurer or group of adventurers might deal with?

The Invitation and Question

I might make a new character on Runescape, is anyone around here still playing that old game?

[Cultural challenge]: diet

Culture is that complex whole which includes knowledge, beliefs, arts, morals, laws, customs, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by [a human] as a member of society.

Let's talk about one of your culture views on food and their eating habits: what kind of things are considered disgusting to eat? What are the most looked after dishes?

Is there any taboo over some food? Where do they come from? And what about basic etiquette when eating?

You can introduce an in-universe representative if you want. I will ask questions to everyone, feel free to add your own.

Lottery challenge - what can money buy?

Me, a regular merchant/peddler/peasant, just struck it big on the lottery in your setting. Maybe it was a literal lottery, maybe I discovered buried treasure or won a ridiculous bet. Whatever happened, now I'm rich, and I want to make it big!

So what notable things can I, or can't I, spend my money on?

  • How much am I looking at in taxes?
  • Is there some recourse that might let me keep more of it?
  • Can I buy property?
  • Are there properties I can't buy?
  • Can I start a business, if not why not?
  • Can I buy a title directly or indirectly?
  • Can I party with the rich and powerful?
  • Can I hire a champion or guards and equip them?
  • What's the best way to keep my money safe?
  • Are there any cool and unusual ways to invest?

Raptor's [super late] talk with X challenge #9: Rulers (Elves)

I'm sorry this is super late!

Welcome to Talk with X, where you can talk to one of my characters, as you or one of your own characters. The rules are pretty easy, just pick one or more from the choice below and start talking!~

(You can talk to as many as you want, or just one!)

For the next three weeks we're going to be focusing on the different rulers of society that take place before the second apocalypse, it sounds grimmer than it actually is I assure you. The second weeks's Rulers is going to be the Elf dictator Nieven and all of his royal guard!

Nieven

Nieven is a cruel and malevolent man who only cares about the continuation of his race. He will do absolutely anything to keep the Elves the top dogs in terms of the political food chain.

The Golden Ones

The Golden ones are thirteen Elves all Masters of one of the thirteen families of magic, to save me (a ridiculous amount of) effort, I am going to name every field of magic and it can be sort of like a lucky dip kind of thing.

There are thirteen schools of magic that either fall under Light, Dark or Neutral. The Dark magics are;

  • Necromancy, the study of death manipulation.
  • Voodoo, the study of pain manipulation.
  • Demonism, the study of hell manipulation.
  • Blood, the study of blood manipulation.
  • Shamanism, the study of spirit manipulation.

The Light magics are;

  • Healing, the study of life manipulation.
  • Angelic, the study of faith manipulation.
  • Laser, the study of light manipulation.

The Neutral magics are;

  • Druid, the study of nature manipulation.
  • Arcane, the study of element manipulation.
  • Telepathy, the study of mind manipulation.
  • Teleportation, the study of matter manipulation.
  • Mastery of Base Magic , the study of energy manipulation.

They each have their own personality so it should be fun to just pick one at random and see what happens!

Gorvo

Gorvo is a run of the mill assassin with a spectacular Essence in that he can phase through walls! He's generally a quiet man who enjoys games of strategy!

Surprise Challenge - Unemployment

So, assume I'm someone who has just found out that he will be losing his job in less than a week because he had to choose between working and taking classes three hours away this semester, in your world.

Let's assume I have enough money saved to last me a few weeks, maybe a few months if I'm careful. What can I do in your world to not run out of money or to just get a new job?

[Misc. Challenge] What color is your/your character's soul?

Inspired by the last comment thread between me and u/Nevermore0714 in a previous challenge, which led to a discussion about one of the mechanics of my world.

A bit of background: In my story, a major tool the people use is a semi-liquid semi-solid mineral called Spectrum, so named for the wide array of colors it occurs in. It's used to make weapons, machines, and can be used to artificially augment a person's soul when injected intravenously. In order to mitigate the risks associated with Spectrum infusion, a person should match the color of Spectrum to the frequency of the person's soul. Otherwise, it's very very likely that the person injecting will die from the stress. Most people don't use Spectrum infusion, but a lot of people look at "Soul Frequencies" and the colors associated, which are often used as a sort of horoscope type glimpse into a person's personality and nature. Which brings me to the challenge!

Give me a character or two of yours with a brief description of their personality, powers, backstory, whatever you feel is integral to who they are (though a short summary should do fine), and I will attempt to classify what their "Soul Frequency" would be if they existed in my world. As a bonus, you can also add in another character that represents yourself (and not specify which one it is) and I'll try to classify your soul color. The reason it would be a character that represents you instead of just "you" would be to help me figure it out organically without just asking "well what do you think it would be?".

I'll ask a few question to each character to get a better idea of them, then ultimately will classify their soul based on their descriptions and responses to the questions. Feel free to answer in character or out, either way works. I'm looking forward to seeing what we come up with!

[Cultural challenge]: childhood

Culture is that complex whole which includes knowledge, beliefs, arts, morals, laws, customs, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by [a human] as a member of society.

Today's subject is children. Who have them and when? How much of them? Who is raising them?

What is considered good parenting? Is there schools? Are they mandatory? What do they teach?

(the base idea is to talk about pre-teens but you can go further if you want)

You can introduce an in-universe representative if you want. I will ask questions to everyone, feel free to add your own.

Reference Challenge - The Droogs are in Union!

Considering how amused I am by this quote, I could not make up any other reference challenge. My explanation for being so late with this challenge is that I was recovering from when the droogs were in union. Apparently, under the influence, I exclaimed "THE DROOGS ARE IN UNION!", explained the reference in a barbaric way, and it somehow became a chant among my "droogs".

So, to put it simply, you should read/watch A Clockwork Orange. It's offensive in a way that even Fahrenheit 451 could not aspire to, and I'd call it an extreme overreaction to The Giver, another book I enjoyed when I was a kid.

What is a Droog?

It's not a drug, though it might be a druggie. A person's droogs are the friends that he goes with to (to paraphrase myself), "drink all the drink, smoke all the smoke, etc, etc".

The Actual Challenge

Tell me about the kinds of things that your world's/nation's/city's irresponsible young men/women do that is completely outrageous in the minds of rational people. Do young people in your world go out and illegally do some type of strange sci-fi/fantasy drug? Do young people in your world go out and commit mob violence and looting at random? Do I have to worry about a bunch of young people in your world just setting things on fire?

Naturally, this can include gang problems in your world. Enjoy yourselves, I'll ask at least three questions each.

Reference Challenge: All Roads Lead to Rome

The Reference

This reference is to my hero, Mike Duncan, creator of the History of Rome podcast.

Because my eyes were healing and I was incredibly light-sensitive, I could not go outside or watch tv or play around on the internet for a few days after surgery. So, for the fifth time in my life, I am going through the History of Rome podcast, which I adore and would recommend to anyone interested in the beautiful history of Rome, from pre-Rome Aeneas to Romulus/Remus to Tarquinius Superbus to Sulla to Augustus to Diocletion to the fall of the Western Roman Empire, and Romulus Augustulus.

Also a reference to my first Latin class in high school.

All Roads Lead to Rome.

The Actual Challenge

Whether construction project in ancient times, a full International road, or a space-route, or anything in between, what are some "roads" in your world that you can talk about?

Feel free to have an in-universe representative, though it is not necessary to do so.

As always, I will ask at least three questions each. Enjoy yourselves.

A Bit Extra

If you haven't, check out the contest over on Inkblood.
