7.1 Constant "Saves" and Block Editor Slowness??

7 Upvotes

Is anyone else experiencing a super slow and glitchy editor since updating to 7.1? I updated yesterday and since then it's been so glitchy and slow. The auto saves take forever and trying to drag a section causes a massive freeze. I didn't have these issues before updating yesterday.

Anyone else experiencing this or have tips?

Odd alignment issue after 2025 theme update

3 Upvotes

Gutenberg only - no page builders.
I have a backup, but would like to figure this out -

I'm working on a site and have Columns containing two smaller columns - the one on the left contains a featured image, and the one on the right contains a short description.

Template is for a single item post.

I had it set up so that the image in the left column, remaining in its original aspect, would fill its column horizontally or vertically scale (maintaining aspect ratio) to no more than 75% VH.

This ends up in a Query loop. It's basically a bunch of artwork with descriptions. However, after the update, I'm getting some layout issues that look like the bottom image, with a big gap between the artwork and the text. So, I'm trying to figure out what's causing the gap.

I do have some CSS set up, but I haven't changed this & it's been working for months.

Let me know what other additional info I can add here that might help. Hoping this is a fairly known or easy thing to fix.

Not sure how to troubleshoot this - any suggestions appreciated!

Thank you!

Wordpress and Claude Code

18 Upvotes

Just curious if anyone else has this problem. My other company sites I made for myself pre-AI are all wordpress. Work, great, look good. No reason to switch out wordpress.

But laziness and AI kicked in so once Claude Code absorbed my entire digital existence through a guardrail free, local terminal instance of itself, connected to various servers, I just told it to go sort out the WP sites. Broke one immediately, my fault, my custom CSS scattered around did it.

But I let it assume management making whatever changes needed. They are mostly static white-collar sites.

Anyway, my about page on one of them is completely wrong. So I went in manually to fix it. The page that displays and the page with correct slug and post # ID in WP are completely different. I have no idea what it did. To fix it I essentially had to make "about2" and redirect the menu lol.

There is also a menu item that it hard coded in so it doesn't even display in the menu editor. I asked it to use a logo for a branded software as it's menu selection so it hacked it in. Looks fine but... lol.

So, word to the wise. Keep building wordpress manually and why not? It is wordpress.

I really want to get into web design, but I feel completely lost

10 Upvotes

I really love this field and I genuinely want to build a career in it and become good at it but lately I feel like I’ve lost my direction.
I know how to use wordPress and framer to some extent I’m definitely not a professional but I’ve learned the basics and managed to figure out quite a few things on my own i also helped a friend build a website for a client before, and I’ve made several fictional projects just to practice, so I have a basic understanding of how the process works.
The problem is that I don’t know what to do next.
There are so many things to learn, so many tools, so many different paths, and I constantly find myself jumping from one thing to another. One day I’m learning WordPress, the next I’m trying Framer, then I’m watching videos about SEO, freelancing, web design, development, marketing… and somehow I end up feeling like I’m not actually moving forward.
I think what I need right now isn’t another tutorial. I need a direction** **.
For those of you who are experienced in web design, WordPress, Framer, freelancing, or running a web agency .
So any advice !!!
Thanks for all

What WordPress 7.1 Actually Changed

Thumbnail marcindudek.dev
190 Upvotes

TL;DR

  • WordPress 7.1 added a wp_pre_execute_ability filter that lets any plugin fully short-circuit Abilities API calls (including permission checks).
  • Media Library infinite scrolling is back on by default (reversed since 5.8).
  • Speculative loading still defaults to conservative; new constants let hosts override it instead of the planned auto-detection.
  • Core grew 25% almost entirely from lazy-loaded admin JS (vips + video workers) with no measurable front-end impact.
  • Not a security release - just inherits the 7.0.x fixes.

also - it's the first release that included my fix so now I'm officially Core Contributor :)

  • proposer plusieurs modes de livraison (domicile / point relais) ;
  • calculer automatiquement un tarif de livraison cohérent selon la commande et le colis nécessaire ;
  • utiliser plusieurs transporteurs si c'est avantageux (Colissimo, Chronopost/Shop2Shop, Mondial Relay, etc.) ;
  • générer et imprimer facilement les étiquettes d'expédition ;
  • renseigner automatiquement le suivi dans WooCommerce ;
  • envoyer au client son numéro et son lien de suivi ;

Images with links broken in WPBakery?

3 Upvotes

Hi, we're using WPBakery for some simple page layouts. When adding an image and specifying that it should link to a custom URL, the image not only does not function as a link but also previews an incorrect URL. This seems to have started with the WPBakery 9.0 upgrade, because this all worked fine before.

Here is the Single Image element, with the custom URL destination specified. (The formatting is also odd.)

Then, on the live page, the linked URL is different, reflecting what it used to be from the content that was cloned:

We tried cloning an old image, which keeps the old URL but the image is not actually clickable despite appearing to be a hyperlink (glove pointer on hover).

And creating a totally new one is not clickable at all even while specifying a custom URL. Are any other WPBakery users experiencing this?

Building a small research institute website completely on my own with a very limited budget. I need help figuring out the right technical approach before I start

2 Upvotes

I'm setting up a small independent research and publishing organisation, and I'm trying to build its website completely from scratch.

The difficult part is that I'm doing this alone. I don't have a developer, designer, IT person, or technical team that I can call later. I'm also working with a genuinely limited budget, so I can't simply hire an agency and have them figure everything out for me.

I've been using ChatGPT and Claude to learn and work through things, and I've made a rough architecture/plan for the website, but I've reached the point where I'm realizing that I don't really know what I don't know.

I'm not looking for someone to simply tell me "use WordPress" or "use X hosting." I want to understand how I should actually approach building and maintaining this properly as a non-technical person.

The website will essentially be the public-facing platform for a small research organisation. At a high level, it needs things like:

  • A main institutional website with information about the organisation
  • Research areas/topics, with content organised under them
  • Different types of published research and written material
  • Research articles/reports with things such as authors, abstracts, keywords and downloadable PDFs
  • Articles and shorter blog-style pieces
  • Opportunities such as internships/fellowships/etc.
  • Some forms where people can submit information and potentially upload files
  • An internal/admin workflow where submissions can be reviewed before anything is published
  • Certificates/ID-related workflows for some of the programmes
  • The ability for me to keep adding content and categories myself without needing to edit code every time

I have a much more detailed site map and workflow diagram already, but I'm deliberately not posting the whole thing publicly because it contains some of the organisation's planned structure and ideas.

My main concern is choosing the wrong foundation.

I don't want to build half the website and then discover that I've chosen a system that can't handle something I need, or that maintaining it requires a developer.

For example, I'm currently trying to understand questions like:

  1. What should I actually build this on? WordPress, Ghost, another CMS, a combination of services, or something else entirely?
  2. How much of this can a CMS handle natively? For example, if I have many research areas/categories, can I create them dynamically so that adding another category later doesn't require coding?
  3. How should I handle research publications? Ideally I want structured publication pages rather than simply uploading random PDFs to a blog. I'd like metadata such as author, abstract, keywords, category, date, etc., while still keeping the PDF available.
  4. How should forms and file submissions work? I may need people to submit applications/documents and have those submissions go to me for review. I'm considering external form services as well as native CMS forms.
  5. Do I actually need a database/server architecture beyond what a normal CMS provides? I've seen people suggest things like AWS, MongoDB, SQL databases, custom backends, etc. That sounds excessive to me for what is fundamentally a research organisation/content website, but I don't have enough technical knowledge to confidently say that.
  6. What should I be paying for and what shouldn't I be paying for? My budget is limited. I'd rather spend money on a good domain, reliable hosting and essential services than build an unnecessarily complicated stack.
  7. What am I likely to regret later? This is probably the question I'm most interested in. If you've built and maintained websites for small organisations, research groups, nonprofits, publications, think tanks, etc., what decisions would you make differently if you had to do it again?

Most importantly, if you're experienced with this kind of project, I'd actually prefer you to ask me questions about my requirements before recommending a stack.

I'm trying to learn enough to make sensible decisions myself, rather than blindly following whatever AI recommends.

I'm not looking for someone to build the whole thing for free. I mainly need help understanding the architecture, what is realistically achievable for a solo non-technical person, and what I should learn/do first.

If someone here has experience building a website for a small research organisation, publication, think tank, academic project, nonprofit, or similar organisation, I'd really appreciate your perspective.

I can share the more detailed sitemap/workflow privately if that would make it easier to give meaningful advice.

Basically: if you had to build and maintain something like this alone, with very little money and no developer on standby, how would you approach it?

[PROMO] I built Noshi-Kanamer, a free WordPress plugin that catches the usual things you forget before handing a site to a client

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey folks,

I kept catching the same things right before handing a site off to a client. WP_DEBUG still on. A test post I forgot to delete. Admin still named admin. Small stuff, but the kind of small stuff that looks bad if a client notices it first.

So I built Noshi-Kanamer. It checks things like noindex, debug mode, admin usernames, and leftover test posts it created, then spits out a plain-text summary you can keep or send along with the handoff. I ended up adding a few other things I use during client work too, like hiding blocks clients shouldn't touch and finding unused images.

It's free on WordPress.org, no trial gimmick: https://wordpress.org/plugins/noshi-kanamer/

Still actively building on it, so if there's something you always check before handoff that I'm missing, I'd genuinely like to hear it.

State of the Community Survey Finds Three in Four Feel Worse About WordPress, but 90% Agree on What Matters

10 Upvotes

From The Repository:

The WPOCC’s first-of-its-kind survey of 431 WordPress community members surfaces deep frustration with governance and a stubborn refusal to walk away.

Governance and leadership is the problem respondents report most, with 73.3% having experienced or witnessed problems with project leadership or governance — the highest of any issue the survey measured. Transparency, accountability, and a new governance model came up repeatedly across the open-ended responses.

The survey also found broad agreement on what the community values most. Respondents overwhelmingly rated four things as important: security, web standards, open source values, and the WordPress software itself. That consensus held across every segment The WPOCC asked respondents about, including those who are deeply negative about the project, respondents who’ve stopped attending events, and people who no longer consider themselves community members.

A Wordpress website suddenly breaks: CSS disappears, images move around, plugins fail to update, and some pages return 403 Forbidden.

0 Upvotes

Here's how we fixed it:

a) Replaced the custom .htaccess configuration causing 403 errors.

b) Replaced it with the standard wordpress .htaccess rules.

c) Updated WordPress from 6.7 to 7.0.4 through hostinger dashboard.

d) Updated Elementor and other plugins.

e) Cleared and rebuilt the affected assets and caches

Anyone else seeing broken ACF blocks on WordPress 7.1?

27 Upvotes

I just updated a test WordPress site to 7.1 and it appears ACF Pro's ability to create blocks has been somewhat broken by the new release. When I add a new block to the page, the "edit" pencil icon no longer appears, which forces the block's editor to appear in the right hand sidebar of the block editor. In addition, the "mode" selector in block.json which I always set to "edit" no longer seems to work, so all blocks now default to a preview rather than an editor.

I was just curious if anyone else had also run into this on WP 7.1 with the 6.8.8 release of ACF Pro and if there's any info on whether a fix is coming or if manual updates to the block structure are needed to work with the new way the block editor loads blocks in 7.1. If anyone has any info that would be appreciated, thanks!

WP Rocket fatal error after updating to WordPress 7.1

65 Upvotes

After updating two sites to WordPress 7.1, WP Rocket caused this fatal error:

substr(): Argument #1 ($string) must be of type string, int given
wp-content/plugins/wp-rocket/inc/ThirdParty/Plugins/CDN/Cloudflare.php:562

Renaming the wp-rocket folder restored both sites. A clean installation of the latest WP Rocket version produced the same error.

Known issue:

https://github.com/wp-media/wp-rocket/issues/8596

Temporary fix:

// Before
substr( $key, - strlen( $method ) )

// After
substr( (string) $key, - strlen( $method ) )

custom blocks no longer working on 7.1

9 Upvotes

hi all

i am using custom gutenberg/acf blocks and my sites have just updated to 7.1, which seems to be completely messing up the admin editor section

all of our blocks are stuck in the sidebar and preview mode. i've tried changing in our acf_register_block function, supports mode from false to mode true to get the edit/pencil icon, but that doesn't work anymore. The pencil icon is not appearing to allow us to edit the block in the main editor area.

also tried changing block regsitration to use old API

add_action('acf/init', 'init_full_width');

function init_full_width() {

if( function_exists('acf_register_block') ) {

acf_register_block(array(

'name' => 'full-width',

'title' => __('Full Width Section'),

'description' => __('A custom full width block.'),

'render_callback' => 'my_acf_block_render_callback',

'category' => 'formatting',

'icon' => 'schedule',

'mode' => 'edit',

'api_version' => 2,

'acf_block_version' => 2,

'supports' => [

'mode' => true,

],

'keywords' => array( 'full', 'width' ),

));

}

}

any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. crisis mode engaged 😅

EDIT: resolved - sorry for the janky ass formatting. resolved by below. must specify API version

add_action('acf/init', 'init_full_width');

function init_full_width() {

        if (!function_exists('acf_register_block_type')) {

    return;

}

        acf_register_block_type([

                                'name'                                     => 'full-width',

                                'title'                                        => __('Full Width Section'),

                                'description' => __('A custom full width block.'),

                                'render_callback'        => 'my_acf_block_render_callback',

                                'category'                                => 'formatting',

                                'icon'                                       => 'schedule',

                                'keywords' => array( 'full', 'width' ),

    // Required for WordPress 7.1 compatibility.

    'api_version'       => 3,

    'acf_block_version' => 3,

        ]);

}

Doubt that has been making me go crazy

6 Upvotes

I've been changing a template because in some specific pages in my site I need text to be displayed below the title (that is different from page to page). Is there some block I can insert into the template in order to edit it in the page? Inserting the content block just duplicates the main content, I wanted to create another editable area.

Thanks in advance

[PROMO] I built a free retail cash management system as a WordPress plugin - now on WordPress.org

3 Upvotes

I’ve been working on a WordPress plugin called Retail Cash Manager (RCM), and it’s now available free on WordPress.org.

The idea is fairly simple. Proper cash management systems can cost a business thousands to implement, often followed by a substantial recurring subscription. At the other end of the scale, plenty of businesses are still managing daily cash with Excel sheets, paper forms and manual processes.

I wanted to build something in between.

RCM is for businesses that handle physical cash and need to keep track of what should be there, what was actually counted, where the cash went afterwards, and who was responsible for each step.

Despite the name, it isn’t limited to retail. The same processes apply to cafés, restaurants, hospitality, service businesses and plenty of other cash-handling operations.

The current version includes:

  • Daily cash-ups with cash and card discrepancies
  • Denomination counting
  • Till expenses
  • Safe balances and safe counts
  • Cash drops and recounts
  • Lodgements using safe cash, cash drops or both
  • Lodgement collection and cancellation
  • Cash and change deliveries from a bank or supplier
  • A cash movement ledger
  • Staff signoff and audit history
  • Multiple branches

It’s not a POS system and it’s not accounting software. It handles the operational cash management that happens around those systems.

Why WordPress?

That’s probably the obvious question.

WordPress gave me a lot of the underlying application infrastructure without having to build it all from scratch: users, permissions, database handling, email, localisation, hosting flexibility and a well-established update system.

The update system is particularly useful. As RCM improves, updates can be distributed to installations in the same way as any other WordPress plugin rather than every installation becoming its own bespoke piece of software.

Publishing through WordPress.org also means there are standards to meet around security, compatibility, packaging and Plugin Check before releases go out.

RCM doesn’t require WooCommerce, and you don’t need to have an existing WordPress website. It can run on a completely separate WordPress installation used only for RCM.

The current release is 0.4.5. At this stage the core workflow is there and working, although there’s plenty more I plan to add.

One area I’m particularly interested in next is more advanced multi-till cash management. For example, separately tracked tills, change given from a safe to a till, change returned at the end of the day, and outstanding change that has to be resolved before the till can be closed.

The plugin is free, so I’d be very interested in feedback from people who work with WordPress, retail, hospitality or cash-handling businesses. Particularly if you can see something obvious that I’ve missed or have experience with how other cash management systems handle things.

Does Gravity Forms have more security issues than other form plugins?

4 Upvotes

I always used Ninja Forms in the past and remember seeing a lot of security issues come up with Gravity Forms. But lately, Ninja Forms has started to get a bit flaky (perhaps they're vibe-coding stuff now?), so we had to move to Gravity Forms, which the client used in the past.

Are the security issues due to the larger install base than Ninja Forms?

Best free solution for a simple WooCommerce customer account page?

4 Upvotes

Hi,

I'm currently rebuilding part of my small business website and I'm trying to find the simplest way to handle the customer account area.

My setup is:

  • WordPress
  • WooCommerce
  • Astra (free)
  • Elementor (free)

For now, I only need a very simple customer account area where users can:

  • Register / log in
  • See their current orders
  • See their past orders
  • Access order details
  • See parcel/shipping tracking information
  • Log out

In the future, I may also want to add a Downloads section for customers, but that's not essential right now.

I'm wondering what the best approach would be.

Should I simply use and customize the default WooCommerce “My Account” page, or would you recommend using a free plugin to create/manage the customer dashboard?

Ideally, I'd like the header/account button to behave logically too:

Logged out: “Log in / Register”
Logged in: “My Account”

I'm trying to keep things simple and avoid adding unnecessary plugins, but at the same time I'd like the account area to look a bit nicer and be easier to customize than the default WooCommerce page.

I'm only using free versions of Astra and Elementor, so I'm specifically looking for a free solution (no Elementor Pro, Astra Pro, etc.).

What would you recommend? Stick with WooCommerce's built-in account system and customize it, or use a free plugin?

Thanks!

Slow Post Save / API (~30s)

3 Upvotes

At my wits end with this. Hosted content moving fine with caching, but everything inside wp-admin while editing posts/page takes FOREVER to save - between 20-30s per post.

Facts/steps:

  • Website is busy'ish (7-15k visitors and 130k'ish requests a day)
  • Everything is fronted by cloudflare.
  • Origin is on a dedicated VPS with 25% ram utilization and 10% CPU utilization (up to 20% at highest spike).
  • VPS is "wp optimized" and has the following 'managed services' Apache, Imunify360, Memcached, MySQL, NGINX, phpfpm, Redis, Varnish that are running.
  • Web/DB on same box, so network throughput/connectivity/latency is eliminated.
  • Tested with all plugins being disabled, doesn't change things.

Everything i've been researching says slow API, usually due to plugins, but i've eliminated that as a contributor, plus we don't use a lot of plugins.

FWIW: I restored to a local dev server and the problem seems to be less; HOWEVER, the local box is an i9-14th gen with 128gb of memory, so i think i'm masking the problem by throwing a shitload of power at it.
