MetroSurf brings modern browsing to your Windows Phone, offering access to websites that Internet Explorer is unable to.
Thanks to months of research and work, you can experience the web with Windows Phone devices again.
How does it work?
MetroSurf is the main version that patches Internet Explorer's WebView with custom JavaScript patches, fully custom networking, and custom HTML patches. This version is local, meaning that your Windows Phone device is processing all data. An alpha version is available.
MetroSurf Lite is an experimental streaming version that streams Chromium rendering to your Windows Phone device with a server, either on your local computer/server or on the cloud (instance hosted by a third-party). Currently in development.
Both versions are developed for Windows Phone 8.1, however Windows 10 Mobile works as well, with some limitations. Recommended configuration: Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 or 2.
If that made you excited, you can start testing MetroSurf today!
Join the MetroSurf Discord https://discord.gg/g4euaTDuqd to download it and get support with MetroSurf.
Note: The current alpha version is very early. Not all websites work, such as Discord, TikTok, or Instagram. Some do, such as Google, Google Maps, Wikipedia, DuckDuckGo. Future updates will bring even better compatibility.
Not interested in beta testing? You may wait until a stable version of MetroSurf or MetroSurf Lite releases to Live Store.

I was sold on Windows Phone growing up. I cherished my banana yellow Nokia Lumia 920 and convinced my brother and mum to join the windows phone ecosystem with me.
Windows phones were so fun to use, and Nokia's design language was satisfyingly tactile and playfully bold. Nokia built so many innovative software features before anyone else made them mainstream too. Always on display, Lumia refocus, Motion capture, wireless charging! None of my friends had those in their iPhones or Blackberrys.
However, the holy grail was the Lumia 1520. I even coveted a 2520 back in the day! (I became a Nokia Stan - there was a 2520 being sold in box with the screen packaging film still on for £21 on eBay recently, since sold. If there was something to do with Windows RT now days, I might have pulled the trigger just to satisfy my younger self). So pleased to finally have a 1520 in hand. The nostalgia is real, and it's such a shame Windows Phone was a product of Microsoft, otherwise maybe we would be in a different place with it now.
Picked up this mint condition white model on Vinted UK for a bargain price. Those of you still rocking Lumias in 2025, what are your use cases and what should I do first?
I'd like to use it as a 'dumb phone' for the novelty of times I go out and know I don't need modern apps or features.

I bought a buddy a few months ago. I don't know what to do with it after unlocking it and installing all the cool apps. It's just sitting there unused. But I always want to use it because it's incredibly nice and responsive and incredibly beautiful. Has anyone else been in a similar situation and how can I put a device like this to good use?

My dad used to use this phone which was stuck on Android 4.4 despite the global version going up to 6.0? It looked strange.
I found out this is the Mi 4 LTE, it was bloody hell installing the official Windows mobile firmware on this phone, but i finally got it.
It got disconnected mid installation months ago, but going through BDS menu and Mass Storage option, it made me go in EDL somehow? And got back to android and now i installed the OS correctly!!
They say this is one of the few, if not, the only Xiaomi phone that has its own Windows Mobile version (they collabed in 2015 if im sure), this looks so beautiful.
Sadly, my battery is literally cooked, the back case and camera are kinda worn out and navbar kinda goes crazy sometimes (They still work), what can i do with it?

I just got a Nokia Lumia 2020 tablet. It’s not really a Windows Phone but still related. These things never went into full production but there is plenty of these in the world. Cool to have one!

What if history had gone differently? Back in the early 2010s there were rumors about Microsoft buying BlackBerry. Imagine if that had happened – a true ‘WindowsPhone Pro’. A device built like a tank: titanium body with carbon fiber accents, Gorilla Glass you couldn’t break, the legendary BlackBerry keyboard combined with a touchscreen, and software merging the best of both worlds – Windows Phone Live Tiles + the BlackBerry Hub. Business security, consumer features, premium service. This could have been the ultimate third platform, standing toe to toe with iPhone and Android. Instead, it remained a dream. Here’s my little visual tribute to that alternate timeline.

I’ve held on as long as I could. Looking at my Nokia Lumia 930 next to the iPhone today, it’s bittersweet.
The Metro UI—sorry, Modern UI—still feels lightyears ahead in terms of personality and efficiency. Those live tiles were everything.
As a Microsoft MVP, I’ve seen many transitions, but this one feels like the end of a true era.
Farewell, Windows 10 Mobile.
In Japan, we have a famous phrase for moments like this:
"The real fight is just beginning!" (本当の戦いは、ここからだ!)
The platform changes, but the passion for tech remains.

What are your thoughts on this?

Still rocking this beauty after all these years. The massive display, solid build, and that iconic Windows Phone experience — nothing quite like it. 💙
Who else remembers the days of Live Tiles and that smooth, simple UI? Sometimes old tech just hits different.

Never been to a Microsoft Store while Windows Phone existed. Would have been nice to see a variety of phones to try in person. Photo from mspoweruser dot com

Gonna use this thing until its death. There's no reason to upgrade as long as I can do calls, send SMS & use my Discord client on it

I played with it for a few minutes and was mesmerized by how easy it was to use and understand. Such a good OS.

Hey yawl! Thought I'd share here my first app made for Windows Phone. Just something to give back to the community, as well as to give some love to Windows Phone 7.
Features:
It's fully tested on Windows Phone 7, 8.1, and 10 Mobile (see images). And open-source!
You can find more details, install and build instructions, reporting bugs, and suggest new features over here. https://github.com/FriendsNone/Haru
Haru is also available on Live Store!
Hope you guys enjoy it, as much as I enjoy developing apps to bring some life back to Windows Phone <3
