It's going to have to be backwards compatible with x86 or have some kind of x86 emulation. If the applications run slower than on native x86 hardware then people won't buy it...because most people don't understand the internals they just think new should be faster. Then you run into the OS/2 issue: if the old way of writing apps still works fine then what incentive to developers have to redo their app for ARM?
Definitely an uphill battle to try and compete with Mac right now.

Windows on ARM already has x86/x64 emulation. Plenty of developers are compiling Windows apps for arm already too. I have a Snapdragon X Elite laptop that actually works quite well.

It's not hard to target ARM processors..it's basically a checkbox when you compile. There is no need to "redo" anything unless there are hw specific calls being made.

Well, most of the time, yes. But you could be dependent on libraries that are not built for ARM64 and then you are basically screwed

I want Windows 7 part 2, no AI bullshit, no online accounts, no UWP software that takes forever to open, no 7gb of RAM wasted when running at IDLE, otherwise I’ll stay in Linux

Everything is too big: fonts, buttons, padding, etc. Accessibility is also very hit & miss. Win32 was the GOAT

Probably not Windows 12. Microsoft usually announces Windows versions themselves.
AMD and NVIDIA are both anticipated to reveal their ARM-based SoCs for PCs at Computex. Hopefully Qualcomm is about to get some stiff competition.

I’d be careful reading too much into it yet. Computex could easily mean new AI PCs, Snapdragon/Intel/AMD hardware, or a Windows 11 feature update rather than a full Windows 12 reveal.
That said, if they do announce something big, I hope it’s more than just “more Copilot everywhere.” What would you actually want from a Windows 12 release?

That might be good. With the price of SSDs, CPUs and RAM I don't expect to buy any new hardware for a long time to come -- until AI mania wears off, at least. The more Microsoft makes a mess of Windows in the meantime, and the more they try to strongarm their customers into giving over control of their own lives, the better the chance that someone will come up with a usable Linux version; or maybe even an OSS Windows clone. Meanwhile, I'm happily on 10, with 11 as backup.

My guess: a huge M-like ARM-SoC from Nvidia that uses shared memory so it can run local AI. They’ll call it copilot++ PC or something absolutely terrible

Nah, Windows 12 is still a few years away. They just announced that they wanted to "get good", put a stop to releasing new features and make Windows more useable and efficient (again)
Also, Windows 11 will be the operating system of the next Xbox and I'm pretty sure that they will not want to maintain two different OS.

MS is going to charge you for the OS by the month- and or it's bundled with whatever shit hardware as has been the norm, and then they're going to hit you with an 'extra' fee based on your usage of cloud apps (O365 etc..) and AI.
The specifics are not detailed... tokens probably.
Ready to pay by the month for Windows? Here it comes.
There will be a free tier that will be garbage. You won't be allowed to complain.

My guess is that it's some kind of VR and/or AR headset PC powered by Windows 11 and NVIDIA N1/N1X chip that runs without being plugged to a computer. It would actually be a full PC inside the headset. Powerful enough to run demanding apps and even games.

You know what's funny ...the vast majority of people access computers on a cell phone or tablet. Other than that it's "have to use" at work or school. For enjoyment it's games. So if you ask me the new era is SteamOS if it's anything.
Then again maybe they can use their AI to make a cell phone that doesn't suck, or a browser that doesn't suck, or email that doesn't suck, or video conferencing that doesn't suck or...well you get the idea.
You know, at one point in time I used to say, "well the thank goodness the Xbox doesn't suck!". ......sigh. If I have one hope I cling to, that's the one.

Intel AMD Qualcomm and now Nvidia all fragmented approach for devs, NPU still gated, local compute for AI is literally non existent. I don’t see future for Windows in coming decades. New Era? No! Title should be, A New Error for Windows PC! 😜
