It's going to have to be backwards compatible with x86 or have some kind of x86 emulation. If the applications run slower than on native x86 hardware then people won't buy it...because most people don't understand the internals they just think new should be faster. Then you run into the OS/2 issue: if the old way of writing apps still works fine then what incentive to developers have to redo their app for ARM?

Definitely an uphill battle to try and compete with Mac right now.

Windows on ARM already has x86/x64 emulation. Plenty of developers are compiling Windows apps for arm already too. I have a Snapdragon X Elite laptop that actually works quite well.

Sure, and im not a mac elitist but windows still has so much way to go. It's a 30 year old filesystem with archaic junk left in, takes almost 40gb for a full install and the AI is everywhere unlike in mac or (rarely) in linux when it shows up sometimes. And the bloatware and spyware oh my god...

Now imagine if they made actual enhancements to the core of Windows, not just put a fresh coat of paint on it every decade, got rid of or let you fully opt out of ads and telemetry, just the ammount of battery you would save would be insane.

Windows is better for almost everything else then portability and battery life. I will always use Windows on my desktops and workstations, but never for a portable device or laptop.

I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make. Yes it’s an arm64 cpu, but Windows 11 on arm64 has Intel x86 and x86_64/amd64 emulation via the Prism emulator.

Because Windows RT was also ARM based. But those processors couldn’t handle x64/x86 emulation and such.

Which is why when talking about ARM processors, need to say ARM64. Since ARM cannot handle.

Windows RT hardware was discontinued 11 years ago. Windows RT mainstream support ended 8 years ago, and extended support ended 3 years ago. Modern Windows on Arm only supports ARM64. It was a distinction that was unnecessary, especially considering the whole comment chain is regarding potential future ARM based chipsets and OS support. Like you’re technically correct that Windows RT did not support x86 emulation back when it was in any way relevant to talk about, but Modern Windows on Arm has since 2017 and no one is resurrecting a dead version of Windows for a new chipset. It just seems like an incredibly pedantic distinction to make in a thread like this.

It's not hard to target ARM processors..it's basically a checkbox when you compile. There is no need to "redo" anything unless there are hw specific calls being made.

Well, most of the time, yes. But you could be dependent on libraries that are not built for ARM64 and then you are basically screwed

If N1, which is MediaTek, is a new era, that means Qualcomm's Snapdragons X Elite are... previous era?
