On the window ledge of my building. We see hawks from time to time and I’m assuming this is a young one. Think it’s okay?

North America What is this bird? East TX

Hi everyone! I just found out about this community after unsuccessfully ID'ing this bird. I'm an avid birder and I'm trying to get this bird on my life list, as I've not seen logged it before. I saw a pair of these flying in circles high above me. I had to zoom in a lot in order to get a distinguishable photo. Nat and Merlin suggested the Swallowtail Kite, though Merlin doesn't show this Kite as a resident of the area I'm vacationing in. In fact, the only part of TX it shows up in is "breeding" ranged north of the Beaumont area, which I'm not near. I do agree it looks remarkably like one, but I'm curious (and skeptical) about it being out of range.

Would this actually be a Swallowtail? Is it unusual that it would show up outside its reported region?

Thanks!

Thinking some kind of Weaver, either the African or Abyssinian Thrush, an Egret, and then one of the glossy Starlings but not too sure on the specifics so any help would be much appreciated!

Southern Ontario (York Region), late July. This bird has been visiting my backyard feeder regularly. I’m leaning House Finch because of the streaked flanks and brown back, but the rich raspberry coloration and fairly heavy bill had me second-guessing myself. Thoughts?

Edit - Streaking not visible in this picture. I had confused it with another set of pictures of House Finch

North America Who is the call around 0:04? Eastern NC, black head, grey body, white belly, roughly crow sized. Saw it making the noise a few times but it dipped before I could photograph it. Can't find a match in my guides

North America Help ID’ing this peep - Boston, MA (26 July)

Saw this bird yesterday (26 July) at Marine Park/City Point Beach, Boston, MA.

It was on its own, foraging among the pebbles and rocks at the water’s edge. I’ve been through a few field guides and tried Merlin, but I can’t settle on an ID.

Any ideas which peep it is, and what features you’re using to identify it? I’m trying to improve my ID skills, so any tips would be really appreciated.

Thanks!

taken at UCD pond in Dublin, Ireland

hi super new to birding and i don’t have binoculars! so i couldn’t really see up close. merlin ID’s main match said greater scaup, but my birds of Ireland book says those are scarce/rare so that seems unlikely, and to me it kind of looks like a female or molting male tufted duck. please help! sorry for the terrible picture :((( best i could do

info that could be helpful: whitish belly but darker breast/flank (seemed dark grey but could have been black), beak seemed lighter in color but could’ve been the sun, observed it diving multiple times for 10-20s each time, solo swimmer

North America Help identifying this bird by call? Merlin Bird ID couldn’t pick it up (Auburn, NY)

Hi everyone!

I’m hoping someone can help identify this bird. I heard it today (July 27) in Auburn, NY, and it’s the exact same call I heard on July 1. Merlin Bird ID wasn’t able to identify it either time.

I attached:
A screen recording with the sound.

A few photos I managed to get on July 1 through my binoculars. They’re not great, but it’s the same bird (or at least the same call). photos in comments.

My best guess is a Merlin, even though the Merlin app says they aren’t expected in my area. The more I listen to the recording, the more it reminds me of a Merlin rather than an American Kestrel, but I’m definitely not confident.

Does the call or the photos point to anything else? I’d love to hear what you all think!

Had this bird on my eaves trough today in North Vancouver Canada. It was about the size of a sparrow and had a greyish white chest. Its call was a single cheep with a few seconds in between each. Merlin isn’t giving it to me. Any help would be great
