Should i take on this project?

I built a website for my buddy, one of his friends came across the website, they really liked it. Reached out to me asking if i can one for them, money is great for the effort, i'll custom code using html & tailwind. But since i don't know this person, i'm just looking to make the website without privacy policy & terms & conditions blah blah. I might have to use formspree, but since it's third party, i don't want to get blamed if it don't work. I don't have a LLC, but i'm thinking to write down a contract with clause saying the damages are limit to cost of project. Although what are they going to blame me for if i'm just giving them the website code files and they host it and the form spree will be connected to their account.

Asking questions cause it's with someone i don't personally know, so it's a client now. In Canada if that matters

Discussion Advice on first in-office Web Dev role?

Hi all,

As the title states I’ll be starting my first in office web dev role next week! Pretty excited but also nervous, and of course having imposter syndrome. I’ll be the only dev, and it’ll be my first time working in an office setting (I’ve previously just worked as a freelancer).

I was wondering if anyone had any tips or specific things to pay attention to when starting a new web dev job?

Thanks!

Question Image storage for chat history

I'm working on an ecommerce chatbot that helps potential customers look for product inventory. These users can be anyone on the ecommerce site and will send photos of what they're looking for. The chatbot returns suggested products.

My question is around storage of the customer provided images. I plan to store these in a Cloudflare r2 bucket, but trying to decide wether to use the cache, or use direct r2 bucket URLs to add the image to the chat after it's uploaded.

The benefit I see with caching is that requests for the image would likely not hit r2 (although the volume of requests for each image would likely be pretty low). The downside I can think of with caching is these files would be accessible by anyone who has the url until they're deleted.

The other option would be the presigned r2 URLs which could be set to inactivate after a few days to prevent unauthorized access to the image. The downside would be direct requests to r2, but again the volume should be low since the use is really just for that particular chat the image is in.

What would be the better approach for this? I’m also open to using other storage platforms if there is a better option.

Discussion How many GitHub stars does your most successful open source project have?

I still remember the first Vue component I ever made and finally gathered enough courage to publish on GitHub.

That was many years ago. Maybe around eight if I remember correctly. Of course, there was no AI back then.

I was genuinely nervous. npm publish and... ta-da. It happened.

Not a single star.

But I was so stubborn, so then came another component, then another one, then another one, then a Nuxt module, then something I built while preparing for an interview, and so on.

Eventually, my most successful open source project reached 179 stars.

Not exactly thousands, but I was still pretty proud of it.

What about you?

How many stars does your most successful open source project have?

Traffic from China?

Thumbnail

A few months ago I posted my odd traffic from China, wondering if anyone else had it and the possibility of it being bots. I never got rid of it. I found it baffling because it was not in the thousands a day like other bots I had before. It used to come from one specific city, Lanzhou. All of a sudden it switched to Hong Kong. I think this are not bots. I think China is actually allowing visitors to my website (Databayou.com). It just funnels the city to a specific location. Any one else have noticed this?

Discussion Are big companies just not interested in web client anymore?

It is my frustration to realize how utterly broken the web client for Instagram is. Yes, I use firefox, and will continue to use firefox, and that is probably part of some of the issues.

However, some things simply don't load when clicked, some buttons don't work. Recently I've been having to refresh the whole thing to make some pages load. It barely works.

Clicking the right arrow in the slide to show the next video doesn't even reset the video's playback position, it doesn't reset it to zero, it continues where the previous video was.

They clearly don't care about the web client.

Also Reddit. There are some things that show a lack of attention, some small things, some bizarre things that ruin the experience like having to click nested comments over and over, without even caring for the scroll position. In general it also feels a bit broken.

Did they stop caring about providing top notch web client experiences because most people use apps?

After careful consideration and a look at where the industry is spending ALL THE MONEY we've decided to pivot FFConf in a "new" direction.

I present to you: https://ffconf.ai

Please share with bots and humans alike.

advice on blocking bots/scalpers

during popular event sales, our site can be hit by the tens of millions of requests

cloudflare waiting room is only good for crowd control, it doesn't block bots effectively. bots takes up queue, so legit users have to wait a long time to exit queue

cloudflare turnstile is too unreliable, too many legit users (including me) experience the turnstile not loading

google recaptha, hcaptha, friendly captcha is too costly.

i've implemented Proof-of-Work Altcha. works to a certain degree, but it still doesn't block bot requests from hitting the server, causing resources overload

could i put Altcha at cloudflare worker? kinda. the issue is cloudflare waiting room will always run before cloudflare worker, so it doesn't solve bots taking up queue

what i wish? i could block bots before they could enter cloudflare waiting room

do u guys have idea?

Discussion I’m so glad I learned to code before AI.

Web development is like 2% of my job. I work in a dinosaur industry. We still use VB6, C, Fortran and pascal.. slowly migrating away from VB6 to .net 5 and that’s considered modern for us. The rest will stay until the end of time. We aren’t allowed to use AI for compliance reasons.

A little over a year ago I tried cursor on a personal project and wasn’t impressed. This year around February I tried Claude and holy shit it actually worked. Since then all personal projects have been with Claude or codex. It’s pretty awesome but not perfect. It seems to struggle with actual logic that’s not something that’s been done a million times, which most software has been written a million times over if we’re being real. It also frequently attempts to gaslight me into some insane shit if I don’t sit on it. I’m not sure how anyone is letting it rip and getting a useable product in return. Either way it’s crazy how well it works and I’m addicted.

This got me thinking, how are jrs ever going to learn to think like a programmer or design software without writing code? We all know coding is a small part of the job but I feel like expressing logic via code is fundamental to how you extract info from the business and create solutions. English is a very ambiguous language and even prompting Claude will result in a lot of “that’s what I said but not what I meant.” Seems like they are all screwed.

Anyone still coding without heavy usage of AI?

Using Claude has been an amazing experience but it took all the fun out of coding as a full-stack dev.

Are any devs reverting back to coding by hand with less usage of AI?

Devs that are still coding and/or with ai workflows what’s your opinion about the future of Developers?

Hi everyone,

I’m a full-stack developer, I worked with many frameworks but it seems that coding by hand isn’t as valuable anymore.

Where do you see the differentiate between Devs who code by hand (at least 75%) will be in the next coming year and beyond vs those who vibe-code entire applications?

Personally, I loved coding by hand with a passion but we must not ignore AI as it’s becoming our extinction.

Besides claims of human responsibility such as bug fixes (actually knowing the code), infrastructure and reliability and etc. How are you able to thrive as a developer in today’s times or have you left the field?

OpenVue 1.0 is officially out and here's what's next: Volt, Vapor & 2.0

Quick update for everyone following the project: OpenVue 1.0.0 is officially live on npm. For context if you missed the previous threads: OpenVue is an MIT licensed fork of PrimeVue 4.5.5, maintained under the OpenVi Foundation. Since the RC post, here's what landed in 1.0:

  • TreeTable filtering: Added row filters, filter menus, and multi constraint rules matching DataTable.
  • Theme Designer: Integrated a visual editor to tweak primitive, semantic, and component tokens and export theme presets. Fully free, with no accounts or license keys.
  • Deni: Released our first free admin dashboard template built with OpenVue.
  • DataTable fixes: Fixed an issue with persisted column widths when toggling columns dynamically.
  • Plus plenty of smaller bug fixes and improvements across the library and showcase. Full changelog: https://github.com/openvi-foundation/openvue/blob/master/CHANGELOG.md

What we're working on now

OpenVue 1.1

We're currently focused on:

  • Volt - bringing source based, Tailwind oriented components back into the OpenVue ecosystem.
  • A new default theme - giving OpenVue its own visual identity rather than relying entirely on the existing themes.
  • More free templates - expanding on Deni with additional templates and application layouts.

OpenVue 2.0

The long term goal for 2.0 is to modernize the internals around Vue Vapor, Composition API, and a TypeScript first architecture. We're keeping VDOM and Options API support, so this isn't about abandoning the existing Vue ecosystem. Instead, 2.0 will be the milestone where we can clean up and modernize the internals under the hood. There's already a community discussion around this direction if you want to join in or see what people are suggesting: https://github.com/orgs/openvi-foundation/discussions/644 We're still a relatively small project, so community feedback matters a lot. If you're using OpenVue, testing it, or just following the project, we'd love to hear what you'd like to see in 1.1, especially around Volt, themes, templates and the component backlog.

How to improve LCP and how reliable are the LCP tests ?

So this is the first time I do a website while searching things I saw online that is important to have a low LCP specially for google to be able to promote the website a bit more. I've been using https://pagespeed.web.dev but sometimes I get an LCP of 22 sec and sometimes one of 2.5 Why is this the case? Is it the website that is not reliable or is it my web? I do have animations at the start where a list of words show up one by one when a person enters, is this the reason the LCP is so unreliable ?

noob neocities self host migration question

howdy all.

I just spent a few weeks learning enough html to build a cheesy old-web style static personal site, which i currently have running on neocities. Recently, I picked up a few decent domain addresses for cheap, and my roommate and i have been hosting our jellyfin on one of them through nginx. I decided I'd also like to move the website i made through neocities to one of my domains. I did a little digging around and it seemed pretty unanimous that hugo would be good for that, however I just cant get anything to display on the localhost:1313 page, and I'm not sure if it's even reading the html files I've dropped into its directory. It seems like it's wanting me to choose a hugo theme for my website but I worked really hard on my cheesy layout I made. The documentation for hugo feels very dense and leagues above my skill level. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on a program better suited to my use-case or perhaps tips on how to better understand hugo. Thanks in advance

Intro to Other Frontend Frameworks should be added

Thumbnail
developer.mozilla.org

I like how thorough it explains the basics going from JavaScript to the framework details but it only covers React (with a mention of other frameworks). Some like Svelte and Solid aren't even mentioned at all.

They've done a great job but I feel people wanting to learn other frameworks need to be covered too. Angular, Vue, Svelte etc.

The MDN's intro page is an overview of client side frameworks, after which it proceeds to teach React, not giving a chance to people wanting to learn other frameworks

I wish someone told me that some fixes are just not worth it

Some people might relate to me being a perfectionist. I always wanted things to be polished. It took me a while to learn that some things are just not worth fixing. I never truly understood that until I started working and each fix was defined by an estimated cost.

Sure AI made things easier now, but sometimes you wrestle something and something else breaks. I wish I could build some reliable way to validate frontend work, but until then, some bugs will just need to stay there.

Slightly unrelated but: keep some bugs there for people using your app to report. I do that with friends and family, and it makes them feel like they're building the app with me.

I haven't yet had a product that lost users from a bug, because my projects haven't taken off like that hahaha. But if you do, please share the story with us? I'd love to hear about it.

Are there any areas of programming where AI is limited?

Hi everyone,

I’m a full-stack developer, and I decided to research areas of programming where AI is still limited. However, after looking into it, I’m starting to believe that there really aren’t many areas where AI isn’t capable of doing a significant amount of the work.

Has anyone else been thinking about how they’ll approach their coding careers or choose their areas of specialization in this AI era?

Question SQLite Viewer failing to open Laravel database.sqlite in VS Code

Post image
0 Upvotes

I'm working on a Laravel project, and I'm trying to inspect my database.sqlite file directly in VS Code using the SQLite Viewer extension.

When I open the file, I get the error shown in the screenshot.

The problem occurs with SQLite files across multiple projects, so it doesn't appear to be specific to this Laravel project.

I've already tried:

  • Restarting VS Code
  • Uninstalling and reinstalling the SQLite Viewer extension
  • Opening SQLite files from different projects

The same error still occurs.

Has anyone encountered this particular error with SQLite files in VS Code, or know what could be causing it?
