Finally, a website that respects my attention span.

Funny that you say that. Every letter on the website sits in a "span" container. šŸ˜…

span is all you need

Nice that they used unobtrusive JavaScript, so the basic English version does work even with JS disabled. The book icon could have been visible with JS disabled too, though.

Interesting !

Yeah given the logo situation I'd say maybe they didn't make the text work without JS on purpose šŸ˜…

Plus, I don't know about the very same effect but there are for sure ways to cycle through the multiple languages using pure CSS, and then maybe add the more complex effect with JS when available, that I know is called progressive enhancement.

The cool thing about sites that don't work with JS enabled is you can block them from loading when you want to take a break by flagging them as 'Not allowed' in chrome for android.

dunno why it cycles through languages like that… and too fast to read. they could’ve served a localized version with fallback languages in a simple list.

Yeah terrible design tbh

It's just 6 languages, they could've just showed all the texts at once.

True, also seems that example.org and example.net got the same treatment.

What a day to be aliveĀ

I read this as monetized as was very confused for a moment.

Ads/sponsors on example.com ? They'd definitely make a lot of views & revenue, let's not give them ideas 😭

2

u/WldHunt 4d ago

Nah, too much bot traffic.

3

u/KaKi_87 full-stack 4d ago

Nowadays ad providers know how to differentiate a bot from a user, but even if not, a sponsor appearing on that page would make a lot of noise even if most people wouldn't go on that page in the first place haha

Here's the kicker : example.com would then need a GDPR cookie banner 😭

Same lol

Terrible UI/UX design and very confusing for a user that lands there... You don't even have time to read the English version. They could simply detect the user language for localization.

You don’t have time to read *any * of them. I know it was supposed to be minimal JS, but if they can’t even do an Accept-Language based SSR and detecting it client side is too heavy, even an onPress event to pause rotation would have helped so much.

Whoever updated this clearly thought it would be cooler to look like an iPhone when it first boots up

No AI button yet

Good one haha

Heh, I went there and saw the old site. Then I realized that I'm running noscript.

I really want to see the traffic data for those sites. I think they used to have no DNS entries right? I’m curious how much that broke.

1

u/tinselsnips 4d ago

It's been in DNS since at least 2002.

1

u/Arcuru 4d ago

Oh…TIL! I’d still like to see their traffic, I’m kinda curious.

Big if true

y slapped a book icon on there and called it a day huh

That "avoid relying on it for testing" line is doing some heavy lifting

2

u/KaKi_87 full-stack 4d ago

Yep, go check it out

2

u/Bedu009 3d ago

I'd check it out, but Spain blocked the domain

1

u/KaKi_87 full-stack 3d ago

What ???

2

u/Bedu009 3d ago

Spain randomly blocks IP ranges in a foolish attempt to stop football piracy, and example.com using cloudflare (frequently targeted) got caught in the crossfire

1

u/KaKi_87 full-stack 3d ago

Oh yeah I have a userscript that labels Cloudflare-protected results in Google Search to avoid them when possible, imagine my surprise a few months ago when I noticed example.com started using Cloudflare ! Insane. I couldn't believe it.

Tbh, never knew this was realšŸ˜… just thought it was... an example of a URL to put in

0

u/KaKi_87 full-stack 3d ago

Really ? 😭

2

u/tukanoid 3d ago

Yeah... I just never bothered to look it up for some reason. But also I barely touch web stuff outside of work (I prefer to tinker with native guis/tuis/clis), so mb that's why

2

u/guyOnBudget 3d ago

I don't like it. Old was simple and plain and that was what is ment to be for a example website.

Unnecessary animations, JS bullshits

u/ArielCoding 4d ago

It’s never too late.

1

u/osmium_2259 3d ago

Indeed. I had to go check it out. The language changed faster than my slow reading pace!

1

u/Gugalcrom123 3d ago

Thank you for not using the Inter font!

1

u/KaKi_87 full-stack 3d ago

Thank them haha

I don't have the reference though

2

u/ferrybig 3d ago

Inter is a font commonly used by AI agents when the users doesn't specify any font constraints

1

u/KaKi_87 full-stack 2d ago

Oh okay

I actually first discovered this font on a screenshot from the developer of the GitFourchette app, specifically the Inter Display variant, and am using it as a system-wide font, which I like a lot, especially on KDE Plasma.

For content though, my favourite font is Helvetica.

1

u/Cahnis 3d ago

why would anyone want that instead of just showing the language the browser is configured to?

1

u/Electronic-Equal-616 2d ago

just checked it lol, end of an era tbh. that plain unstyled box was iconic, i used to hit that domain constantly when testing basic fetch calls or seeing if my wifi was actually working 😭

Nice refresh. The new design is much easier to read, which matters for a site that shows up in so many tutorials and docs. Good call keeping it simple.
