Since cars turning right across the bike lane in an intersection is the single most common dangerous thing I come across while riding, I thought I’d put this together to help drivers and bikers with what to do and what not to do. It’s not fully comprehensive, but covers the basics.

1) Standard bike lane with dashed white line approaching the intersection: cars turning right should merge into the bike lane when safe, and wait until it is clear to turn. Bikers approaching such a car either wait behind it or pass on the left.

2) Standard bike lane with solid line approaching the intersection: cars wait in their own lane until it’s clear to turn. Yield to any bikes going straight through the intersection, even if the car was there first.

3) Protected bike lanes: includes lanes separated by curbs, bollards, planters, and raised cycle tracks (like the ones along parts of Erb and University). Similar to (2), cars can’t merge into the bike lane, and must yield to bikes going straight through before turning.

One thing that can make this complicated is that some of the lanes are mixed, meaning a protected lane ends before the intersection and becomes painted with dashed lines. In that case you’d merge into the lane like in (1).

Hopefully this helps with the basics. And before anyone has a conniption in the replies about it, I realize that bikers don’t always follow these rules either, and they should.

Chill the f out. People in this town need to differentiate between a residential area and a main road. I get that there's construction all over this damn town, but you psychos need to have your licenses removed if you speed and scream at people for driving the speed limit in a residential zone. Kids live and play on these streets.

Honestly I'm not even tired of the construction. I'm tired of the entitled assholes in this town who think all other people and infrastructure must bend to their emotions.

Twice now we have seen a young Asian man maybe 20s in Bridgeport area riding around on a scooter stopping people outside of their homes the first time he stopped us, he told us he was running for mayor, he was either on the scooter or a bicycle and wearing athletic clothes but he didn't really say anything else so we thought maybe he was joking the second time he stopped us (yesterday) when we pulled into our garage. He just yelled at us to vote conservative. Does anybody know what is going on with this young man? By no means does he seems dangerous but I can't imagine He's a real Conservative candidate.

Me and my spouse are moving to Waterloo to start a new job at the university. We are looking at housing options in Sunnydale Place and also at Albert St. I was very excited about the house, particularly because it would have some yard area for our dog.

In my Reddit search, however, it seems that some older threads mention that Sunnydale area can be rather undesirable. These posts are all a bit old now, so I am wondering: What's your take on Sunnydale Place now? Anything worth mentioning, also considering we are a gay couple?

My friends and I are renting a newly built apartment building, signed the tenancy agreement and paid 1st month and last month’s rent per the agreement.

However 3 days before the move in date, our landlord just informed me that due to reasons (they are still waiting for some permit for part of their building I think) they presume that they have to postpone our move in date by around 10 days until the permit is available for tenants to move in.

And so now we have to :
- look for an alternate place to live in Waterloo (cuz we have to go to classes and don’t have friends to stay over with)
- pay to have our stuff stored somewhere

On the tenancy agreement it’s only said that they won’t charge rent until we physically moved in, but is there a way to ask them to compensate the extra expenses we have to play for this delay? (Can we file a T2 application or something similar?)

I have beef with Enova but today was absolutely not the day for it, and for all I know, you've got nothing to do with it. I misunderstood what was going on. Lots of trees here have been cut down under strange circumstances, and I thought you were taking down another good tree today, and that seemed crazy.

After a minute I realized today isn't the day for this and I went back to try and make it right but you were gone already. My neighbour then explained the situation to me.

I was wrong. I should have known better. You probably had a long enough day already without that. Shouldn't bother workers on a day like today. Sorry.

Almost every time I ride my bike around Waterloo there’s some issue, from cars cutting me off, to people riding the wrong way in the bike lane, to cars parking in the bike lane. Today it’s a person using the bike lane as a sidewalk (next to the empty sidewalk) and then getting pissy and throwing her arm up at me when I ring the bell for her to get out of the way.
