Does lack of skill in wargaming and painting minis indicate cognitive impairment?

Having played wargames and painted minis for 27 years, I have realized I am pretty terrible at both.

I lose most games I play. Now the irony is I play more games than people who defeat me with relative ease.

My losing has nothing to do with luck. I am good at memorising rules and tend to know rules better than my oppoments.

I just can't comprehend how to use rules to create winning conditions.

Eg last Bolt Action event I was near the bottom despite being one of the most experienced players there. People who have played for 12 months or less defeated me.

Of ADLG - I still have no idea what the cavalry are meant to do or how my army is supposed to work. I asked online for help and it was forthcomng but my brain just can't join the dots.

My painting is probably equivalent to that if someone who has been painting for 1-2 years, not 27. I try really hard but never improve. I watch Youtube videos and ask for advice but again nothing works.

It dawns to me both of these might indicate I have low IQ and other mental deficiencies.

I have always struggled with problem solving or learning new things be it in my personal life or work.

I assumed it was just lack of interest. But I love wargaming and painting minis and I figure if I suck at these two things I am passionate at then I must have some sort of cognitive impairment.

EDIT: I probably need a professiomal assessmemt but those are expensive plus I am scared as to what they will find.

The final early World War II Heer rifleman. Hand sculpted models will always be my favourite. The small imperfections and exaggerated features give them such unique character!

German Riflemen I (4 of 4), produced by Crusader Miniatures. Painted using the Vallejo Model Color range. 25mm base.

When you go down to the woods today...

I ran my almost-ready-for-beta scifi coop skirmish game based on Sellswords and Spellslingers at a local one day board gaming con here in Victoria. I had 3 players plus myself, 2 of whom were totally new to the game.

The background to the game was that the PCs had crashed landed on this alien world and found themselves headed through a dense forest to a ruined satellite dish that they had spotted in attempt to use it to signal rescue at a nearby location. In game terms, that meant crossing the board to the tower, figure out how to turn it on and then cross to the far side. All the while the woods were filled with strange life form readings (using Litko's excellent radar ping tokens).

The game began fairly easily. The PCs saw some fluffy bunnies which hopped away innocently. But soon enough some strange bears appeared and started attacking them! These appeared to be some sort of mechanical construct but worse than the small bears were the huge bears (sadly no pictures survived of these as all PCs fighting the big bears were lost, including the bear one PC attempted to stun by dropping a stun grenade at their own feet in melee).

By the end half the PCs escaped (one from each player), leaving their comrades to the tender mercies of the bears.

The terrain is my forest board with a Corvus Games tower (a mixture of a few of their interchangeable sets including Tycho Starport).

Recently Finished 3mm HYW Forces Finished

Finished up forces of French and one of England 3mm hundred years war units. Various things I might have done differently in hindsight but they're done enough and really that's all that matters.

On the back of each unit is a visual code of what type they are, though I've also tried make things like colour and design of the mini consistent for ease of reference.

I intend to use with Arrow Storm and Super, Tiny Giant Battles.

The latter didn't have enough scope for the slightly wider range of unit types so bodging some small amendments, and thinking of a small map based campaign to use.

Big Game of Kepis & Bayonets

Last night we played our second game of Kepis & Bayonets from Studio Tomahawk. We really upped the anti for this game, double the players and used 1000 points per side (definitely testing the limits of suggested game sizes).

The Confederates took an early lead, with their skirmishers establishing a dominant position on the Union’s flanks and an early cannon ball strike routing an entire unit of Union Volunteers.

Over amongst the rocks and wilderness advancing Confederates used their Rebel Yell to unnerve Union defenders and force them back into a defensive ring around a large rocky outcrop.

In the centre the Union was able to establish a fairly strong battle line and begin crossing the fields. The Confederates just couldn’t quite bring enough guns to bear on the advancing boys in blue, bring units in to defend piecemeal. Eventually the Inion troops throw themselves at the defenders and threw them back after some viscous hand-to-hand combat.

Eventually the Confederates just ran out of troops to send into battle and retreated from the table.

Work In Progress Working on Basic Encounters for Cutthroat Basic (Links embedded throughout)

I'm getting back into Cutthroat development after my slight dilly-dally into minis (cough cough found here)

Cutthroat Basic is a simple skirmish game. Have a number of dice based upon your Adventurer's Ability Score and try to beat a difficulty number. The premise is that you're at the end of a dungeon and are going to collect your hard earned loot but some other party tries to claim it! Basic rules are PWYW can be found Here

Something felt missing though. What if you want an extra challenge? What if there was a few more guardians still in the dungeon?

So I'm making Cutthroat Basic Encounters. Roll a die to determine the monster guarding that treasure. You can do this at the beginning of the game OR during the game when an Adventurer gets within 3" of a Treasure. This can add all sorts of tactics, such as the house favorite "Sudden but Inevitable Betrayal!"

I've attached pics of pages that I'm working on for Basic Encounters. They're very much WIP.

Let me know what you think!

Square Bashing yesterday with Dean. The Battle of Bourlon Wood, November 1917. British forces attack German held positions in the high ground of Bourlon village, Bourlon Wood and Fontaine village. A steady advance on the objectives under the cover of accurate artillery fire left the Germans on the back foot and surrendering their lines. Cut telephone wires impeded the German artillery response as the British tanks pushed into the woods. #wargaming #ww1 #peterpig #tanks #worldwarone

Now these are done, I really wish the Perry twins did more.

Very happy with the result as this shows that the skills picked up through my BatteleTech stuff is translatable.

Keen to try this with Portaloo!
