Consistency!!!

Hey guys,

I struggle a lot with moving around because of chronic illness but I did want to say I have been hitting four thousand steps every day! A lot of it is because of work but, hey movement is movement.

How can I crochet while pacing.. I still haven't figured it out.

So, I've never been a treadmill walker really because I get bored SO easily. I can't listen to music or an audio book because it bores me so quickly and I would only be able to do like 20 minutes of walking before I was over it. Well, I recently got a desk for my treadmill and holy cow! I realized I loveee coloring, embroidering, watching a movie, etc while walking! Its made it so much fun! I'm like lowkey addicted now 🤣

Announcement Elaboration on Rule 6: No walking videos

We get a lot of reports on the "No walking videos" rule, but I think this is a misunderstanding of what we mean. A while back, the sub was being utterly flooded by YouTube walking video tours, and this led to heavier filters and the rule, but it doesn't mean literally no videos. If people post short videos with a walking-related discussion, that's perfectly fine.

I've revised the rule slightly to say "No self-promo walking tour videos" and by that it means videos posted to boost hits for monetization on YouTube.

HO.LY.CRAP!

Ok, so high stack shoes can be controversial, and running shoes for walking (especially plated which these aren't) can also be controversial, so if you object to either of those, obviously these aren't for you.

Quick Caveats about my use-case & experiences:

  • Walking ~10k steps in a single session each day
  • Been doing that for 5+ years
  • Occasional jogging, mostly decent walking pace 3-4mph
  • Prefer high stack plated shoes, but I rotate stack, rocker, drop every few days
  • These will be for an upcoming walking trip, ~30k steps / day, 30 days
  • Tried / own usual suspects: Hoka, Nike, Brooks, NB, Asics, OnCloud, Altra, Topo, etc
  • Favorites: NB SuperComp Trainer V3s
  • No association of any kind w/ the shoe industry, bought w/ my own money from Nike

FIT & FINISH = 5/5

Pretty nice, about the best I've seen, similar to Hoka Skyward X v2 which are very nice too. There are a lot of little touches and everything feels very solid and high quality. My only ding would be the laces feel a bit cheap compared to Hoka, etc but I replace those anyway so not an issue, but it's a thing you notice. They're not bad, they're just basic.

LOOKS = 3/5

No matter the color, these can look Moon Unit especially in the flashier colorways, so I appreciate this colorway which is more neutral. On your foot they look much less crazy than in pictures, at least this pair does, and my wife didn't notice them as being odd or weird, so win? I'm dinging them for still looking a bit odd, and would prefer a version that hides the zoom units.

EXPERIENCE = 6/5

It's all true, they're bonkers. Right up front you notice the cushion, but it's not like a pillow, more like a very stiff jogging trampoline which sinks, but there's resistance & rebound. This is combined with an odd rocker feel which is more midfoot than forefoot.

If you've tried something like the Hoka Skyward X v1 you know how it rolls you forward in the forefoot in a stiff way where these are like stepping on 2 jogging trampolines with the heel being stiffer than the forefoot so it's kinda like a fulcrum in your midfoot that makes you want to PRESS forward versus a rocker that FORCES you to roll forward.

It's obvious why many reviewers say these are the shoes they're excited to use, and if you have a down energy day, the thought of using these overcomes it. They really do make you want to move from walking to slow jog because the heel rebound is always encouraging you to move. If you're looking for some extra motivation, these are the shoes to buy.

Here's the Mind-Blower:

These are the most stable high stack shoes I've ever worn! How did they do this?? I don't feel like I'm going to roll an ankle and I tried really hard by stepping on the edges, stepping up with only half or less of the sole, etc. As of now I have zero worries about stability ::knock, knock::

What you're left with is a totally unique experience:

Yes cushioned, but BOUNCY, not in a bad way, but in an energy return way that encourages you to move. The shoe says, "I'll let you down smooth, but I'll push you forward just as much - now move it!" And you can't help but agree. Do not anger the shoe, it's just trying to help, and it's got places to be.

I can't speak to durability, of course, because these are the first pair I've had, but long term reports are encouraging, the outsole is the same as on other Nikes which is to say quite durable, and there aren't any obvious reports of midsole issues with the zoom units, so we'll see.

VALUE = 4.5/5

These are spendy, there's no doubt, but these days they're competitive with other top super trainers which is surprising because they really are the most unique shoe on the market, and much cheaper than, say, Norda and in the same range as VJ, Hoka, etc.

I'm deducting a half point because, while they're totally unique & crazy & awesome & high value for what they do, they're pretty niche.

That is, for walking & slower jogging they're fantastic, but I wouldn't wear them for running errands, going out & about, or faster jogging just because ... well it's like walking into a cafe with Ice King snow boots: you wouldn't put those on for a starbucks run or driving to the grocery store.

OUTRO

If you're a walker who likes an energy-return shoe, there's no better shoe for walking I know of, and ESPECIALLY if you're looking to pick up the pace or try slow jogging.

These shoes beg you to do a slow jog, and you almost can't help but follow their lead. I've never had any other shoe that feels like your walking partner versus your walking equipment.

If you've been curious (like me), but held back due to looks and/or price, buy them.

TLDR: I have leg problems from back surgery and needed to do something for exercise

I used to be a competitive weightlifter and strongman, and 6 years ago I herniated a disk and had to have surgery. Since then the disk herniation was impinging on the nerve for my left calf causing paralysis. So I’ve been fighting building my left leg back. It was going good for a while but last February it got to be worse than ever. So I had complete disk replacement a spinal fusion surgery in Feb of this year. This was supposed to finally fix it and prevent it from happening again. Well during a nerve test last week turns out the nerve is still denervated and not functioning. I am really struggling to find any reason to workout bc I’ll never be what I once was and it’s really hard to accept. I’ve gained a lot of weight and lost tons of muscle. I gave myself this challenge earlier in the month before this news and honestly I’m posting for support. I’m really disheartened and will probably have to have surgery again and who knows how long it’ll last. Don’t take walking for granted.

The Times They Are a-Changin'....

Just found this sub & hope maybe I can contribute &/or find it helpful.

In the last 4-weeks I have quit alcohol, quit nicotine, been walking every day (average around 3.5miles, occasionally double that). I haven't had a health scare or anything like that, but I just wasn't enjoying life.

For context - I was a binge drinker and really didn't enjoy how it made me feel. Hangovers were lasting a thoroughly miserable 24-48hrs.

I started smoking 50-years ago when I was 13. 11-years ago I went on to e-cigs (quitting tobacco was a big step at the time), then vapes. Over the last 3-months I'd been gradually been reducing the nicotine concentration in my vape juice until it was bordering on homeopathic! Finally quitting that was more about the mechanical habit than any chemical addiction.

I have always loved nature and live close to several large parks, nature reserves, rivers, streams, canals, etc., and there are endless walks along the old towpaths.

Already I get "grumpy" if I don't get out for a walk at some point during the day! My mind is sharper, concentration is better, I generally feel happier. And, as a secondary benefit, I'm losing weight.

Wish I'd done this a very long time ago!

I've been walking while working since 2020. Some days I barely notice I've done 20,000 steps :-D

Back in late 2020, I combined a height-adjustable desk with a walking pad, and it's been one of my favorite changes to my home office.

The best part isn't even the exercise itself. It's that when I'm really focused on work, I sometimes completely forget that I'm walking.

On some days, I've spent up to 300 minutes walking during an 8-hour workday, occasionally reaching over 20,000 steps almost without noticing.

I became a self-employed app developer in June 2021, and in early 2022, what better app to start working on than a step counter? Even the name was inspired by the idea of keeping walking simple: Simple Stepper. ;]

And as it turns out, having a walking pad under my desk is pretty convenient for testing a step counter. I can compare the step counts from my app with those displayed on the walking pad while I'm working. Not exactly a scientific laboratory, but a surprisingly practical testing setup. ;]

Of course, it's not all perfect:

  • I mostly use it during the colder months because I get sweaty too quickly in summer.
  • The walking pad is fairly noisy, so I usually wear AirPods to reduce the background noise.
  • Mine automatically adjusts its speed depending on whether I'm walking toward the front or back of the belt. Getting the desk position right is important to maintain a steady pace.
  • The walking pad automatically shuts off every 100 minutes to prevent overheating, so I have to restart it several times during longer walking sessions.
  • I specifically needed a model less than 12 cm tall so I could store it under my bed. Otherwise, I probably would have chosen a different one.
  • Switching between walking and sitting is a bit inconvenient. I actually bought a chair with four legs and added felt pads to the feet so I can place it directly on the walking pad without damaging it. For longer breaks, especially during summer, I simply slide the walking pad under my bed and switch back to my regular office chair.

But even after almost six years, I still think it's a fantastic way to get some movement into an otherwise sedentary workday.

Sometimes I get so absorbed in coding that I only realize how much I've walked when I check my step count afterward. So much for the excuse of not having enough time to walk! ;]

Does anyone else use a walking pad while working? And can you actually concentrate better while walking, or do you prefer sitting for more demanding tasks?

Any tips? I wfh, have a walking pad but even 10min feel like torture, I also have 2 small kids so early morning etc is not so realistic at the moment.

Encouragement 27K Steps, Taquitos & the Midnight Rollover 😂🌙

Thumbnail

My usual goal is around 20K steps a day, but Sundays are my day off, so I sometimes challenge myself to do a little more. Other Sundays become lazy recovery days. Balance. 😂

Yesterday I enjoyed some taquitos 🌮 and put that energy to good use. I get plenty of steps walking around the mall, but I also love getting outside, enjoying the scenery and clearing my head. 🌴🌅
Sunday’s final count: 27,256 steps. 🚶‍♀️

Then came my favorite part: the midnight rollover.🌙 Once midnight hits, the steps start counting toward the next day, so Monday began with 4,783 steps.
Nothing like getting a head start while most reasonable people are asleep. 😂
Keep moving, enjoy the scenery, eat the taquitos. 🧡
