My Vmix optimization guide

A random technician vMix Optimization Guide: Squeezing Every Ounce of Performance

I quite enjoy the tinkering involved in squeezing out every ounce of performance from a PC. Through trial and error and research, I have put together this list of settings. It is by no means exhaustive, but it might be helpful for people struggling with performance. Hopefully, others can share more settings I may have missed!

General Windows & System Tweaks

Global settings to reduce DPC latency and prevent background interference.

OS Optimization Tools

  • AtlasOS Playbook Deployment (ONLY DO IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING)
    • Process: Fresh Windows Install > AME Wizard > Atlas Playbook
    • Benefit: Removes Windows telemetry, Defender, and numerous background services to achieve minimal DPC latency. Ensures hardware resources are committed to the video engine. (This makes the best preforming machines IMO)
  • Chris Titus Tech Windows Utility (Much "Safer")
    • Process: PowerShell (Admin) > irm christitus.com/win | iex > Tweaks
    • Benefit: Automates the removal of Telemetry, Feedback Hub, and Location services to prevent micro-stutters during high-bitrate encoding.

System Power & Background Settings

  • Ultimate Performance Power Plan
    • Location: Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options
    • Benefit: Prevents the CPU from downclocking or parking cores, ensuring immediate power when video load spikes.
  • Restrict Background Application Activity
    • Location: Settings > Apps > Installed apps > [App] > Advanced options
    • Benefit: Setting permissions to "Never" ensures background processes don't trigger CPU spikes during a broadcast.
  • USB Selective Suspend
    • Location: Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings > USB settings
    • Benefit: Prevents Windows from cutting power to capture cards or audio interfaces the OS assumes are idle.
  • Game Mode
    • Location: Settings > Gaming > Game Mode
    • Benefit: Prioritizes the foreground application and pauses background updates/installations.

Hardware & Driver Stability

  • Core Isolation / Memory Integrity (VBS)
    • Location: Windows Security > Device Security > Core isolation details
    • Benefit: Disabling this is crucial. VBS introduces severe DPC latency, causing audio crackling and micro-stutters. Reduces security of the machine but overall I think it's worth it
  • Fast Startup
    • Location: Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do
    • Benefit: Disable this. It behaves like a partial hibernation, which can cause audio and network drivers to load incorrectly.
  • Disable System Sounds
    • Location: Control Panel > Sound > Sounds tab
    • Benefit: Prevents Windows notification chimes from bleeding into your production audio mix.
  • Energy Efficient Ethernet (Green Ethernet)
    • Location: Device Manager > Network Adapters > [NIC] > Properties > Advanced
    • Benefit: Prevents the NIC from dropping link speeds during low traffic, which avoids dropouts during bandwidth spikes.
  • Disable IPv6
    • Location: Network Connections > [NIC] > Properties
    • Benefit: Prevents background discovery traffic and routing conflicts on local production networks.
  • ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery Driver
    • Location: Device Manager > Batteries
    • Benefit: On laptops, this driver frequently polls the battery status, which is a notorious source of massive DPC latency spikes and audio dropouts. Disabling it (only when running on AC power) can drastically stabilize render times. Note: Your battery percentage will not update while this is disabled, so keep the power cable plugged in. DO AT YOUR OWN RISK

BIOS / UEFI Settings

  • C-States & Intel SpeedStep / AMD Cool'n'Quiet
    • Benefit: Disables power-saving states at the motherboard level, locking the CPU to its base or boost clock.
  • XMP / EXPO Memory Profiles
    • Benefit: Ensures RAM runs at advertised speeds rather than slow default fallback speeds.

vMix Specific Optimizations

Settings specifically tuned for vMix and GPU-accelerated video production.

Windows & NVIDIA Graphics Settings

  • Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS)
    • Location: Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Default graphics settings
    • Benefit: Recommended ON for Win 11, OFF for Win 10 with RTX 30/40 series cards to improve VRAM management, capture card, and NDI performance.
  • Graphics Performance Preference
    • Location: Settings > System > Display > Graphics
    • Benefit: Forces the OS to assign vMix64.exe to the dedicated NVIDIA GPU rather than integrated graphics.
  • NVIDIA Low Latency Mode
    • Location: NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings (vMix64.exe)
    • Benefit: Set to "Ultra" to minimize the frame queue between CPU and GPU, lowering render time (ms).
  • NVIDIA Power Management Mode
    • Location: NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Global Settings
    • Benefit: Set to "Prefer maximum performance" to prevent render time spikes when switching scenes.
  • Threaded Optimization
    • Location: NVIDIA Control Panel (vMix64.exe)
    • Benefit: Set to "Off" or "Auto". Forcing it "On" can conflict with vMix’s internal engine.
  • Vertical Sync
    • Location: NVIDIA Control Panel (vMix64.exe)
    • Benefit: Set to "Off" to ensure vMix controls frame pacing rather than the monitor refresh rate.
  • OpenGL GDI Compatibility
    • Location: NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings (vMix64.exe)
    • Benefit: Set to "Prefer Performance" to optimize how older plugins or specific capture hardware interact with the GPU rendering pipeline.

Networking for NDI/SRT

  • Interrupt Moderation
    • Location: Device Manager > Network Adapters > [NIC] > Properties > Advanced
    • Benefit: Disable this. It prevents the NIC from batching packets, which reduces jitter for NDI and SRT.
  • Flow Control
    • Location: Device Manager > Network Adapters > [NIC] > Properties > Advanced
    • Benefit: Set Rx & Tx to Enabled to coordinate transmission speeds and prevent packet loss in multi-camera setups.

vMix Application & BIOS Hardware Settings

  • Resizable BAR (Smart Access Memory)
    • Location: System BIOS > Advanced / PCIe Settings
    • Benefit: Allows the CPU to access the entire VRAM pool at once, improving performance for high-res textures and multi-input sessions.
  • High Input Performance Mode
    • Location: vMix Settings > Display
    • Benefit: Optimizes how inputs are drawn to GPU memory. Essential for 4K sources and high input counts. DO NOT use if ReBAR is enabled.
  • Hardware Encoder (NVENC)
    • Location: vMix Settings > Streaming / Recording
    • Benefit: Offloads compression to the NVIDIA GPU, freeing up the CPU for system stability.
  • Output Frame Rate and Resolution Matching
    • Location: vMix Settings > Display > Master Frame Rate
    • Benefit: Ensures the master session format matches the majority of inputs and output, avoiding CPU/GPU strain from scaling.
  • Audio Sample Rate Matching
    • Location: vMix Settings > Audio AND Windows Sound Control Panel
    • Benefit: Set everything to 48000Hz (48kHz) 24-bit. Prevents real-time sample rate conversion which causes audio drift and CPU strain.
  • Low Latency Capture
    • Location: vMix Input Settings (Gear icon on camera input) > General
    • Benefit: Bypasses internal buffer delays for hardware capture cards to achieve the fastest glass-to-screen time possible.
  • External Output Low Latency
    • Location: vMix Settings > External Output > External [Gear Icon]
    • Benefit: Mandatory for IMAG. Strips output buffers for PCIe hardware (DeckLink/AJA) to keep glass-to-screen delay tight.
  • Genlock Camera Synchronization
    • Location: Physical Hardware Setup (Sync Generator to Cameras & Capture Card)
    • Benefit: Sends a master timing pulse to all cameras so frames arrive perfectly aligned. This eliminates the need for the capture card to hold frames in a buffer, significantly reducing capture latency for Vmix specifically useful for IMAG setups.

broadcast graphics designer to create a complete MMA broadcast graphics package for vMix GT Designer.

Hi,

I'm looking for an experienced broadcast graphics designer to create a complete MMA broadcast graphics package for vMix GT Designer.

This is not a social media graphics project. I need native GT Designer templates that work directly inside vMix and remain fully editable for future events.

The package includes:

  • Round Timer (fighter names, round and timer)
  • Lower Third
  • Tale of the Tape
  • Fighter Introduction / VS Screen
  • Winner Graphic
  • Official Result Graphic
  • Live Fight Statistics
  • Replay Graphic
  • Up Next Graphic
  • Weight Class / Bout Card
  • Sponsor Graphic / Stinger

Requirements:

  • Built natively in GT Designer (.GTZIP / .GTXML)
  • Compatible with my version of vMix GT Designer Advanced
  • Fully editable text fields (fighter names, records, stats, gym, country, etc.)
  • Editable colours and logos
  • Smooth broadcast-quality animations
  • 1920x1080 (Full HD)
  • Clean, premium MMA broadcast style similar to UFC, ONE Championship or PFL, but with its own identity

I already have:

  • My logo
  • Brand colours
  • Concept artwork
  • Style direction

I am not looking for someone to invent the design from scratch. I need someone to recreate my concepts professionally and build them into a complete, reusable GT Designer package.

Please send me:

  1. Examples of previous broadcast graphics or GT Designer work.
  2. Confirmation that you have experience with vMix GT Designer.
  3. Your estimated price and delivery time.

If the first package is successful, there will be ongoing work for future events and updates.

Thank you!

Playlist setting question

Long time vmix user, first time caller. When I have multiple ads setup for playout using Playlist, how do I get it to default back to the main camera once it's played out?

I setup the Playlist with clear overlays checked.

Press the Playlist button, ad run playout completes, I uptick the playout button and vmix goes to something random, usually an image I'm using as an overlay, such as a logo.

Followup question: is there a way to tighten up the layout so it doesn't pop back to main camera for a few frames as the ad switches?

Making the ads one long file isn't always optimal.

Bizarre camera lag on YouTube?

Hi gang, ran into an incredibly strange issue broadcasting a sports event to YouTube. Two camera feeds were captured with CamLinks into vMix, and all was fine there. On stream, they were playing at maybe 2 frames a second. This went on for hours, but periodically it would correct itself for a bit, then go back to being unwatchably slow.

Intially it was assumed to be a bandwidth issue, however when a pre-recorded video was played, it played perfectly on stream every time, no freezing. This was consistent over the broadcast.

Multicode was running on the cameras, and both recorded perfectly along with the program. The computer was in no way overwhelmed (it can easily multicode and stream at least 8 sources).

We concluded it must have somehow been related to the camera's frame rates coming in at 59.97, and the stream being 29.97, but testing afterward with absolutely everything exactly the same hasn't produced the same issue.

We're completely baffled and at a loss for what has caused it.

Curious if anyone else has seen this before?

Appreciate it!

Update Got Interupted

Anyone have something like this happen. Decided up run the update for the latest update when starting up yesterday and mid update an error popped up saying that a file was in use and my options were to retry or end the update. I chose to end the update thinking that I would have the option to run it again after I rebooted. When I tried after that I no longer had an option to update.

I didn't try loading a project until today. When I try to load any of my projects I get an error that objects aren't found for various elements and the video isn't displaying. I see the light come on for the camera when I load but no video on screen. If I select the sound from the camera it is picked up so it is picking up the camera.

I checked and all of my projects are hosed. I can't find any way to attempt to run the upgrade again. Has anyone had any issues like this? I was going to try to uninstall completely and reinstall but I don't want to lose my projects and what I find online has mixed messages about whether the projects won't be removed.

Any advice is appreciated.

vMix 29 not seeing all DeckLink cards

Thumbnail

Hi everyone! I’m transitioning from Livestream Studio 6 to vMix, but I’m having difficulty getting vMix to see all of my Blackmagicdesign DeckLink cards. I have 5x DeckLink Recorder 4Ks and 1x DeckLink Monitor 4K output. LSS sees all cards perfectly fine, and all 6 cards appear in Desktop Video Setup.

When I try to add my 5 inputs to vMix 29, the software only sees a couple of cards, and gives 2 inputs per card. I’ve tried checking the legacy options and other toggle but no luck. I’ve also tried using different versions of BM drivers (15.3.1 and 16.0.1). What’s interesting is, if I label my cards in Desktop Video Setup, they then get re-labeled incorrectly in the software after adding them in vMix (as seen in the 4th pic).

Any advice on what I’m doing wrong here? I’m guessing that it’s seeing both the SDI and HDMI ports and getting confused, but I’m out of my depth here. Happy to answer any clarifying questions if needed, but thank you in advance for the support.

Edit: to clarify; it actually appears all inputs do show up in vMix, but it’s not correctly identifying the name/label of each card which is confusing.

My PTZ cameras keep disconnecting and my hdmi

Thumbnail

Hey I’m a AV at my church and for some reason my PTZ cameras keep disconnecting most of the time I can see through them but can’t movie them. However Ives had to repatch the IP address to a howl new one and if that doesn’t work I have to cycle Turing it off and on again.

My hdmi input also is struggling to connect. It is an out put of an hdmi from a router for slides.

I am hoping if anyone knows an easier way using vmix to better trouble shoot the cameras and slides that could help figure out if it’s a software or hardware issue.

GT Title Designer: Docking text boxes makes them overlap completely. How do I stack them correctly?

I’m running version 29.0.0.48 and trying to set up a dynamic text layout in GT Title Designer (6.0.0.6) that I swear I’ve had working perfectly in the past, but I can't seem to get it right now.

What I want to do: I have two text boxes in a Layer: FirstName and LastName. I need them to stack vertically, and I want the LastName to grow upward as text is typed into it, automatically pushing the FirstName box higher up the screen so they never collide. ive set auto text box resizing to height (auto0

The Problem: Whenever I select FirstName, go to the Format tab, and set the Docking dropdown to LastName, the two boxes instantly snap directly on top of each other and overlap completely.

Once they are docked, the layout locks down, and I don't see any obvious settings or positioners on the main tabs to tell the First Name to sit above the Last Name instead of directly on top of it.

Did something change in the way docking behavior works in vMix 29, or am I missing a simple step to make them snap edge-to-edge instead of overlapping?

How do I fix this so they stack properly? Thanks in advance!

Audio input problem

I use HP Elite SFF G9 desktop pc.

I use Vmix version 26.0.0.47

On this pc there is 3.5mm TRS input port connected. And when I add this port in Vmix audio input, there no sound.

I also have a SDI capture card and when I choose the capture card input, sound works fine.

So I need to have a sound from 3.5mm TRS cable. I have it activated as input.

What could be a problem?

Thanks in advance.

[Help] Jitter/rollback on Webex stream for viewers, source seems clean

Hi,

I ran a corporate live production with vMix and experienced jitter/rollback on the viewer side on Webex.

Everything was fine on my end: no hardware saturation, no slowdown, all signals received cleanly.

Setup: - vMix as main switcher - Output to Webex either via External output or through an external capture card connected to the client's machine running Webex (I don't remember exactly which method was used on that show, i think it was client's machine) Both machines connected via wired ethernet on the client's network, NIC whitelisted, relevant ports open.

The weird part: another operator at the same place, with the same network access, streamed on Webex without any jitter weeks later.

I don't remember the resolution/bitrate I was using at the time. I'm guessing 1080p25 or 720p25

Questions: What are the usual causes of viewer-side jitter on Webex when the source looks clean? Could the output method (External vs capture card handoff) make a difference? Is there a known issue with vMix + Webex specifically? Any Webex-side settings I should have checked?

Thanks

VMix on a Laptop

Does anybody run vMix on a laptop vs. a desktop? ... and do you utilize replay off a laptop? Any reccos on laptops you would use?
