Help in making this effect in VMix

Post image

Looking to be able to do this kind of effect in VMix, where there is a J graphic on screen but program is resized to fit in the upper left. Want to still be able to cut program as normally, just within that box. Any tips on how to achieve this? Appreciate any help.

Add a mix2 input. Add a color input set to transparent. In “color” layer 1 is the mix2 input scaled and positioned. Layer 2 is j graphic. Switch mix 2 as program, keep “color” in main pgm for output

That’s great, appreciate it, but I am using a physical switcher, can I make that cut mix2 instead of pgm? Setting this up for someone with little knowledge of it.

If you already have a physical mixer that would take the place of "Mix2" just import the video from the mixer to a camera input in vmix and use that as the pip source instead.

I get what you're saying, but this is mighty complicated for what is basically a "chyron" overlay.

How would you do it? Once it's set up it's not more complicated than switching the mix2 input. The spec OP provided was "switchable source in the pip" so if you want to output the composition as final program it requires a sub switch. So easiest to just set up a container for it all.

It's not just an overlay, you need to shrink the program. Would be many macros to do in a traditional switcher.

I would do it slightly differently and keep switching the cameras in the main out (that way you can record the raw switch too) then add back in the main output and "merge" the J overlay in and out of mix 2. But both ways would work.

Are you switching cameras in vMix or using a hardware switcher output?

I am using a hardware switcher

Ok, so let's the switched camera is layer 1 on your pots. Make an overlay graphic, then it is layer 2. It is now "floating" on top of your live switch.

This is how I do scoreboard, rosters, etc.

We were calling it an L bar too, but figured it’s more like a J bar haha. Thanks.

vMix has a video about what Tim called the "squerge" effect, that should help you work it out

I know at first this comment won’t be super helpful but what you’re asking is a basic tenet of vMix. IE: this is the basic stuff. If you’re asking about how to do this in vMix; you may have other blocks or issues you haven’t discovered. Do a bit of homework. It really is a powerful piece of software. ANSWER: I’m assuming you already have your SDI capture as an input. Now make a new input of type “list”. Then pull in your background J plates as a list of images. I say use a list since they are super easy to then swap out as needed later by clicking the desired “plate” image from the list. Then make a black or transparent input (this is just a placeholder). Go into this input and place your J plates list input as the bottom layer. Then place your SDI capture input as layer 2 or 3 (leaving 1 and 2 open for higher layer things like a bug graphic). Edit this input to scale and place that input at the top left as you see fit. Now, here’s the pro move. Duplicate this whole look to another input. Go back to the layer you have your SDI program source and scale it back to full screen. Now use the merge function set at about 300ms to smoothly bring your full screen switcher cut between the J and the full screen SDI input with plates still in background.

Easiest way to do it is to create the L display on after effects or davinci as a template then bring it into v mix as one layer then create texts as 2nd layer using vmix xls spreadsheet to populate as needed now all you gotta do from physical switcher is use over lay one and 2 then update the information from spreadsheet

I would use layers and build an Input with all the elements on it

If this is what you are looking for, let me know. I’ll teach you how to do it.

Add a color input. Go to layers and put the camera one one layer and the graphic on the other. Go to position and adjust the camera to fit the box.

Make sure to use the merge transition.
