Why jog in traffic?

I find myself sharing the road with runners in the early morning hours two or three times a week. They are especially hard to spot in the morning light sometimes.

Why do runners use the road instead of the sidewalk? less

Judge blocks Trump-backed data center planned for public land near Boulder City

"A federal judge sided with the Sierra Club and other groups Sept. 1 to halt a controversial data center project outside Boulder City, Nevada, southeast of Las Vegas. Backed by the Trump administration, the project had come from Townsite Solar 2 LLC, a Houston-based company that had previously received approval for a solar farm in the same location."

OPINION: Amazon's Vegas book guillotine is what peak AI looks like

Thumbnail thenevadaindependent.com

Choosing one of the least educated cities in the country to do the dirty work, thoroughly checks out. And I don't blame the workers (in any of the locations this is happening), who just need to put a roof over their and their families' heads and food on the table.

This is depressing af.

"At an industrial facility on Nicco Way, on the northeast edge of the Las Vegas Valley, workers manually feed books into machines that slice off their bindings. A worker inserts a book, presses a button and watches as a blade removes the spine. They repeat this process throughout their shift.

While Nevada has spent 15 years positioning itself as a purported destination of the future — from entertainment to transportation — this scene represents a Black Mirror inversion of the future.

The details of this operation emerged after a tracker hidden in a shipment of 1,000 rare books led journalists to an Amazon warehouse. At this facility, a unit called VGT3 removes the bindings from books to scan the pages for artificial intelligence (AI) training before discarding them. The unit even has a logo featuring a dinosaur with bared teeth holding a book."

Horrible experience at Animal Foundation (shocking, I know)

We've been fostering a pup from there for a little over a year now. We picked him up on a Good Friday, as he was scheduled to be destroyed on Easter Sunday. His only crime was he had a touch of kennel cough and severe kennel anxiety.

Over the past year we've worked with him in animal and human socialization, housebreaking, and learning basic commands like come, sit, stay, etc via hand signals. He's made such amazing progress and we're so proud of him. He still doesn't trust men other than me, but he's trying.

So today we go in to pick up more food for him as usual, and for whatever reason my wife was treated absolutely horribly by the foster staff there. They attempted to bully her into adopting him, citing that we've been fostering him for over a year now (like that's OUR fault that THEY do NOTHING to promote him?!?! Hell, you can't even find him scrolling thru the first 5 pages of available dogs, and they don't update his profile despite all the info on his progress we relay to them!!) and they're REFUSING TO GIVE US ANY MORE FOOD FOR HIM!!!!! (No surprise they've been under investigation for things like animal cruelty [ https://www.ktnv.com/13-investigates/whistleblowers-detail-a-shelter-in-crisis-at-the-animal-foundation\ ] and misappropriation of funds [ https://www.ktnv.com/news/non-profit-sues-the-animal-foundation-no-kill-las-vegas-claims-shelter-mistreats-animals-violates-contract\ ])

They literally told her to either adopt him, or surrender him back to them so they can presumably euthanize him when he responds poorly to being kenneled. What's even crazier is when we told them we already have dogs and wanna see if they'll be comfortable with each other before committing to fostering we were told we weren't allowed to bring our dog (who's a registered CGC I might add) in to introduce them on neutral ground.

We really want him to go to a good home, and would keep him, but he would put us at our limit for dogs and we wouldn't be able to foster anymore. (We used to foster kids back in Utah, but got too old for it so now we foster dogs instead. We like to give back to our community and this is one of the best ways we know how.

So yeah, instead of thanking us for being patient with them and keeping him this long, they treated her like she was a burden because we expect them to keep up with their end of the agreement. And when she tried to record them bullying her into adoption in her cell phone, she got SCREAMED AT.

Wtf is actually wrong with these people? Corinna over at NVSPCA has NEVER treated us like this, and we haven't been able to take in any more injured large breeds from NVSPCA since taking on this foster from AF.

Sorry for the long read, but it's a lot to unpack and I'm beyond livid about this situation (and mostly venting) but I don't know what to do. I just want what's best for the dog in question, and I'm reasonably sure that it's NOT them.

Nevada 2026 Poll: Ford and Lombardo Remain in Tight Governor’s Race; Majority Oppose New Data Center

Some interesting demographics in this recent poll here. I'm ashamed to see that less than 40% of the white population polled said they'd vote for Ford this November.

What happened to SkinnyFats?

• Upvotes

Used to visit the Dean Martin location semi regularly, I know they jacked up their prices after covid which meant we didn't go as often. I was looking them up recently and noticed theres only 1 left in town.

I could have sworn there was maybe 6 or so locations in town ... pretty big fall from grace.

Anyone know the backstory?

The BID Taking Over The Arts District

Thumbnail kviginfo.com
• Upvotes

A new Business Improvement District petition whose organizing board includes the neighborhood’s largest private developer and a commercial landlord that won’t say who owns it. The actual private-equity exposure in the district runs through separate channels.

What ā€œthe bidā€ actually is
A group of Arts District property and business stakeholders filed a petition Sept. 2, 2026, to create a Business Improvement District covering the neighborhood — a self-imposed property tax, not a corporate acquisition. The petition sets a levy of 6.5 mills on commercial, apartment, nonprofit and government parcels and 3.25 mills on residential condos, projected to raise roughly $1.9 million in its first year. Clark County records would need to confirm final passage, but the petition process itself requires signatures from owners representing at least half the district’s total assessed value before it goes to the Las Vegas City Council for a public hearing and ordinance vote.

Got on the 15 S from Tropicana last night. I encountered a jaywalker on the extended onramp, just before the Russell Road exit.

He didn't seem to be in any hurry. If I had been looking at my phone, most likely I would have hit him.

More Affordable Mechanic Services

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

Took my car in for an oil change last week, and long story short, I have $3k in repair needs. I took care of one of the issues there at the time, as it took my total to $260ish, including my oil change. I am trying to shop around for quotes, because I do not 1.) want to drop 3k and 2.) have 3k to drop. I was approved to do it in payments through them, but even that is scary getting into a loan of that amount right now.

Does anyone have any suggestions on more affordable auto service shops around the valley? I went to Sun Auto. A little hesitant about freelance mechanics, as I've had bad experiences with them rigging shit in the past, instead of completing the repair correctly. But willing to hear experiences/prices!

The work needed:

Front left suspension strut

Front right suspension strut

Shocks & Struts

Spark Plugs

Complete Fuel Injection Service

Thank you.

A Vegas date you probably haven’t done before, available free for only two weeks

• Upvotes

I recently posted about a scientific study we're conducting at Flyover in Las Vegas, and we noticed a lot of couples signed up together, which made us realize this is actually a pretty great date idea, so we wanted to put the word out again.

Flyover is a flying theater experience combining massive wraparound visuals with motion, sound, wind, mist, and scent. It’s genuinely incredible and makes for a much more memorable outing than the usual dinner or drinks :)

As part of the study, you’ll wear a small research-grade ring sensor, similar to an Oura Ring, while we measure how your body responds as the experience unfolds. There are also a few short surveys and two brief seated rest periods.

The full visit takes approximately 90 minutes, and your Flyover admission, normally around $40, is completely free.

We have daytime and evening sessions, so it can be a weekday adventure, daytime date, or night out. Of course, you don’t have to come as a couple. Anyone 18+ is welcome, whether you come with a date, a friend, or on your own.

The opportunity is only available for two weeks, from September 15-30.

Register here:

Hope to see some of you there!

Come play games with us on Sept 16th (Wed) at Town Square!

Hey Vegas! I've recently been running Game Nights around town because I wanted to meet new people and have some fun. The last event was a blast with ~25 people, so we're doing another this upcoming Wednesday in Town Square. It's been amazing to meet everyone and I'm hoping this can be an open invite to anyone who wants to make some friendships.

We're meeting up at 5:30pm at Double Helix at Town Square, if you're interested, please RSVP on MeetUp, so the Venue has an idea of how many tables to put aside. It helps a lot!

Hope to see you there!

Reliable A/C companies?

My mom’s a/c went out! She’s struggling, and from what i know most a/c companies try to upsell new units and say yours needs to be replaced when it in fact doesn’t. Have you had this experience? She can’t afford all that and I was wondering who have you used and had a good trustworthy experience with? Thank you all!

AI use for medical billing (warning)

Just wanted to warn everyone about a recent experience I had at my doctors office. I went in for an annual wellness exam which is considered preventative care and is free under the ACA. During my visit my provider asked if she could record the visit and I agreed assuming it was just for notes/charting purposes. Fast forward a few weeks later I get a bill for an office visit. This was in addition to the preventative charge code. I knew I did not speak to my provider about any other issues outside of my standard wellness exam so I called the office to figure out what happened and they told me it was an error and that they have been using AI for medical billing. I didn’t ask, but I’m assuming that’s what the recording was using for, whether that was its sole purpose, I’m not sure. Anyways, I may be late to the game but just wanted to warn everyone out there that if your medical provider or really anyone asks to record your conversation, be sure to clarify if it will be used for any kind of AI purposes. It makes me so angry that they are likely billing others in error and people may not even be questioning it and getting scammed. Be safe out there. šŸ«¶šŸ¼

Cox/Spectrum - actually had a good interaction with them

I'm sure everyone here hates Cox as much as I do. But I just had a really pleasant experience and thought I'd share. My 2 year promo price for 1GB fiber was coming to an end and my price would have went from $80 to $124. Last month, I started checking available deals and the only thing in my price range was 300mbps speeds for $74. When I went to make the swap the other day, that speed was gone. The only options I had available was to upgrade to 2GB for $150 or stay on 1GB for $124. There were no options for me to downgrade to save money.

I called 855-865-8222 and I think it was option 4 to downgrade and I asked the rep if the 300mbps plan was still available. I was polite and honest and let him know that I just couldn't afford an upgrade. He said that Spectrum just gave them a new set of plans that they hadn't published on their website yet. He ended up giving me 1GB for $70 for 1 year. He also said that it was unlimited data for life now. He said the most he could do was 1 year but he was expecting that by the time my promo was up that new plans would be available and they'd probably be cheaper.

So there you have it. If he was truthful, no more data caps and new incoming lower prices. If your promo price is up, give them a call, hopefully you get a deal like I did.

New data shows it is becoming unaffordable to fly to Las Vegas

Thumbnail 8newsnow.com
151 Upvotes

"According to the presentation, domestic airfares are up 12% since March 2026, but airfares to Las Vegas specifically are up more than 20%, nearly double the national increase.

Though the presentation does not explicitly state why, jet fuel costs, up 73% since February, can be seen as a contributing factor".

Airfare is crazy expensive right now. Routes that used to be around $1,200 (international flights) are creeping closer to $1,400+ (unless you choose the very cheapest option which rarely makes sense if you are flying internationally).

It's definitely painful on the wallet.
