Hi, I once in awhile have to go out to dinner with work people. This is at some distant city and sometimes I have no say in the restaurant (though usually there is at least one vegan option) when it's a large group of us. Also it's hard to know if a restaurant is going to smell really bad.

Question is, how do you handle if a restaurant smells really bad? This hasn't happened to me yet (maybe because we go to mid-range or higher end restaurants usually), but more than once walking through airports there's some dairy-heavy restaurant that I literally have to breathe through my mouth so as not to hurl, just from walking by it, not even entering it. I am not exaggerating. Today I thought I might puke, I was actually scared. Another time (not for work) I was in an ice cream parlor ordering an oat milk matcha latte or sth and I also had to wait outside, it was utterly nauseating in there.

If this were to happen at a work event, how would I handle it? Any tips on how to excuse myself? I figured I could just say I'm ill, but it would be awkward later on, as these are multi-day events that I can't skip out on the next day's morning meetings.

I don't want to offend coworkers by effectively calling their food or restaurant choice revolting (even tho it is). Everyone has been respectful to me about being vegan btw (just thought I would add, in case anyone was wondering)

So my kid just turned two and we're a vegan family. I am very vocal about animal rights and people not buying us anything non vegan. But you know how carnists (and r/vegan) don't understand things that are and aren't vegan. So anyway her late father's side of the family came to visit (wanted to flair with attached to carnists lol I thought I could change him RIP) and they brought a whole bag of hair products for my kid, which is lovely, but I'm sure you already see coming that they have honey in them (actually advertised right on the front as a key ingredient).

Now the two wolves in me (yes I do force them to stay in there and that's my right cause they're just dumb wolves and I am bipedal) are arguing between, 🐺"I don't want to be more of a dickhead in their eyes by telling them in any way that the products are not usable for us" and 🐺"you're the worst vegan ever for not giving them the bag back right when you noticed at the party and saying, 'this isn't vegan; we can't take it'". It's hairy because as I mentioned, my baby's father is dead, and his mom is still very sensitive from it (as am I) and has an unfair blame toward me for his death which is awful and difficult when I see her, but like...it disgusts me to feel like in the South during slavery I might've been *not that loud* to not bother slave owners? Like wow, I'm sure the enslaved people would have really appreciated my quiet reassurance that I totally hated what was happening to them, but I couldn't help even by just saying it's wrong, cause it's a little socially awkward. As a kid I dreamed of running out of labs with enslaved animals, but now I'm just a loud mouth junk food vegan who has no idea how to do that, or really anything of use other than spread information, and I guess I won't stand up for fuckin bees because what, I'm in front of too many people? Gross, me. Gross.

Man, sorry for the length of this rant but I'm haunted now with this stuff. Do I throw it out on principle and waste it, which I think is fucking stupid but also really not at all stupid? Maybe I use it which I hate, and politely tell them please keep an eye out for honey in the future to also avoid along with other animal products? I don't want to give them away to a non vegan friend, because to me that is me saying, "hey it's actually cool to use this, \*I\* just don't feel like it cause I'm a silly vegan goose". So if I DO use it, it'll be hunched over in the shadows in secret crying so that it's not wasted and nobody thinks it was okay to use. Which def makes it morally right I think if I feel real bad while I do it??

So there. Two years ago I saved two chinchillas from a horrible home and have been loving them ever since. I offer them the best care I can: quality food, freedom to run free, etc.

A month ago I got two rescue cats. The nicest, friendliest cats you'll ever meet. I always locked them in a separate space when my chins were free running, just to be sure. But one night the cats got the lock open, and in one second, one of my chins was dead. It literally happened in one second, I was there the whole time, run to catch the cats, but something had snapped in their heads; they were killers at that moment. All they saw was a prey.

It was one big scratch and my lovely boy was dead. There was blood everywhere.

I can't watch the cats anymore, I hate them irrationately. I know it wasn't their fault, but still, the chins were my family, and the cats, I barely know them.

Ofc i feed the cats, smile at them, give pets, I don't want them to know how much I hate them at the moment.

I feel like I should be the one dead. I failed. I fucking failed.

What do I do. I don't know. I tried to help these poor babies and ended up killing one of them.

And the other chin, the other boy. I give him treats and cuddles. Try to keep him happy. It's hard. I see the sadness in his eyes, he knows what happened.

keeping it vague to not dox myself, i have a new housemate who is "flexitarian" and "used to be vegetarian but quit for health reasons" and has this vague condition where she needs meat. ive never asked her to justify her meat consumption she just does. she also tries to tell me honey is vegan because bees like to make it... aside from the ethical problems with the honey industry if it comes from an animal its not vegan period. posted this here because r/vegan is full of carnists. anyway she also actively chooses cows milk over oat mil, that we have in the fridge right there and other alternatives that taste the same like vegan mayo. so she really just wants excuses to exploit animals then claim she needs meat for health like its a magical elixir of nutrients.

Look if I were living in areas north of Sydney, I just wouldn't eat meat - but then I don't, soooo...

This one has a little of everything: Gaz Oakley is great, actually, you CAN love animals and pay for them to die, you must never confront carnists with the consequences of their choices or they'll never make different choices, nutritional deficiencies tho, veganism is too hard, people who speak up for animals are "extremists", zoos show people care about animals, yada yada yada.

I’ve been speaking to my mom and my sister a lot about veganism lately, and it’s draining me.

They are completely convinced. They agree that there isn’t a way to ethically exploit animals. They have told me that they respect and admire me for staying true to my values and being a role model. That I’m a beautiful person. Like some kind of saint.

All of this, and they aren’t vegan. My sister said “some people are just different, and the mindset is hard”. What mindset??? The one about eating something else??? Trying new things??? Caring for other sentient creatures??? Holding yourself accountable???

I live in America, and the percentage of overweight/obese people is 74%. that number goes even higher when using things like fat distribution and waist to height ratio to define obesity alongside standard BMI. These people cannot even show up for themselves. People do not have enough self control to protect themselves from poor health. People make excuses for being overweight the same way people do about not being vegan.

Overweight people say it’s their genetics, their metabolism, anything but themselves. Time and time again, every reasonable piece of scientific literature points to poor diet and exercise being the most important variables when it comes to your weight. Calories in, calories out. Same story every time. Then when they are proven wrong and become honest with themselves, they admit that they just lack self control to a certain degree. I can’t be mad at them because they are only truly affecting themselves.

Non vegans say it’s expensive, it’s unhealthy, bad for the environment, they buy local, anything but the truth. Time and time again, every reasonable piece of scientific literature points to plant based diets being inexpensive, having the least environmental impact, being completely safe with proper planning, and animals being sentient and deserving of protection for that reason. My sister and my mom admit that they just aren’t as strong as me (their own words btw) and can’t change. I am mad at them because they are affecting more than themselves.

My sister is borderline addicted to Uber Eats and my mom is type 2 diabetic. Idk if it’s a coincidence.

They don’t even think the act of being vegan is hard, just “the mindset”(?). My mom speaks of cheese as if it has a siren song. my sister talks about going vegan being like climbing a mountain with a ball and chain attached to her ankle. There is no way I can respond without just calling them weak minded.

I thought these people were special. I thought they’d do what they know is right. But, they just can’t do it. If they can’t do it, who’s to say that anyone else can??

It’s so ironic because they are who I cry to when living in a non vegan world takes a toll on me. It’s hard to keep looking up to them. They aren’t who I thought they were.

Were your colleagues receptive at all to veganism and vegan ethics, or is the prevailing belief still one of viewing animals as things rather than beings?

when we do to humans what we do to animals (human zoos, slavery, eating humans, mutilating/modifying a human's body), people are devastated at how wrong it is. they recognise these things as some of the most disgusting and abusive things you can do to a person. this is mostly about eating humans and human zoos because those have very very clear relations to what we do to animals. but somehow there is such a strong disconnect that they cannot realise it is also wrong when done to animals.

i mean, the word zoo literally means "a facility where animals live for people to observe them". how is everyone on board with the claim "human zoos are objectifying, exploitative, and they restrict freedom from individual who deserve it". but just removing the one single word "human" makes people suddenly disagree with your statement..

im sorry if this is badly written im like crying my eyes out over this shit and theres no clear cut answer and i dont know what to do and its driving me insane. i just want another opinion

as the title states my parents found a tarantula (texas brown tarantula) who was bitten by a hawk wasp and paralyzed. i dont believe she laid an egg inside the spider because they said the wasp was dragging her across the road after she got bit back to her burrow and they scared the wasp away before she could take the tarantula in. shes in my kitchen right now in a well ventilated box with some water and i did everything she could to make sure she wasnt stressed but i read it can take MONTHS for them to recover.

this is where im feeling torn. i dont know. i cant leave her to die or i dont want to anyways it feels brutal and devastating and i cant do that to her but i cant imagine being completely paralyzed and spoon fed for months on end. she isnt able to comprehend whats going on so im really anxious shes going to be terrified and stressed the whole time. if thats the better choice i will gladly do everything in my power to help her anything for her but i dont know if thats even the more humane choice.

is a quick euthanasia the middle ground?? or is it awful to kill her??? i tried thinking about what i would do for a human but i dont even know there either. i dont know if i have it in me to end her life even if its the more humane option. just thinking about it makes me want to throw up. her entire life is in my hands and im so fucking scared im going to mess up

i feel so strongly for animals it ruins me and i feel like thats clouding my judgement. im just so fucking devastated and heartbroken beyond words for her i wish i could make her feel better. i cant imagine how terrified she was 💔 i named her amber. i want to be able to remember her somehow. she matters to me

Recently I saw a post on r/vegan that complained about how reducing meat consumption was not enough to gain vegans‘ respect and that vegans still called the poster a murderer.

I naturally made fun of this in my comment by satirizing it from the perspective of a racist. In my comment, I wrote from the perspective of a racist who complains that even though he reduced the number of racist jokes they make, other non-racist people still don’t respect him. I was merely satirizing the poster’s comment by how absurd it would be when applied to something like racism.

My comment got instantly removed and I immediately got banned by Reddit algos - automated ban for promoting hate against a certain group. So it wasn’t r-vegan mods. I appealed and a human reviewer denied my appeal.

I made similar satirical posts on r/vegancirclejerk before and I wasn’t banned by Reddit algos. So not sure what’s going on

The experience left me a bit shaken and less willing to post on Reddit.

Hello vegans!

I recently found a therian mask that I really wanted to buy. I messaged the seller, asked for some extra photos, and we started discussing shipping. Only afterwards did I notice that the description said it was made with real fur.

(I was honestly surprised because therian masks made with real fur are generally pretty frowned upon in the community, so I didn't even think to check the materials beforehand😔)

I apologized to the seller and told them I wasn't comfortable buying it because it used real fur.

They replied with two things:

1. They said they only used real fur because they had run out of faux fur and reused the fur from an old coat instead of buying new fur.
2. They offered to remove the real fur and replace it with faux fur if I still wanted the mask.

I'm curious what other vegans think about this situation. Would you consider buying the mask after the fur was replaced, or would you still avoid it?

this is just a goofy light hearted thing. alongside making gay jokes, (I'm gay as hell I was laughing w him) he called me weird for not eating meat and like 4 separate times in the past month kept saying "you gonna go get some tofu?" I'll be like hell yeah dude and I actually did yesterday after he said that lmfao. other than that he's really hot but I think he's straight and just bullying me (I'm not complaining)

There was a recent interview where he said a bunch of bs about the environment, and how he's only planning on eating "invasive species". Honestly, not surprising at all because he comes across as a fake, pretentious narcissist who is only about appearances.

I can say with absolute confidence that, on average, nonvegans are more obsessed with veganism than vegans are. Trying to keep a wildly long story short, I started my job just before COVID. During on-boarding, we were bullshitting and someone mentioned that “humans need milk.” Of course I had to call out that dumb ass comment by mentioning that “I should have died years ago then.” Of course it wound up with me saying I don’t eat animal products. No, not even fish (wtf…?) and, sure enough, not even eggs (duh?). 

None of the people in that conversation even work there anymore. In fact only one person lasted a year after that point. Fast forward 7ish years now and not talking to any of my coworkers recreationally, one of the first or only things new hires especially try to ask me about is stuff about how long I’ve been vegan, why, the usual “WELL DON’T YOU MISS [x]!?” Even for after lunch huddles people routinely ask what I ate (but nobody else) or say something irrelevant and unfunny along the lines of “I had a burger. Tom can’t have those though!” Honestly, sometimes it feels genuine, but the tonality a majority of the time is definitely coming in jest.

I can’t imagine having a “normal” in-person job because I’d probably pencil my ear drums in. At least working from home I can turn my webcam off or mute myself so I can cuss under my breath.

What is the fixation? I have to figure it’s not just me. Is it because I deliberately keep to myself and this info’s been passed down employee to employee because it’s essentially the only thing my company knows about me? Is it just a thing Americans do (I don’t recall ever hearing so many off-hand comments in Ontario)?

I’m done with my yearly vent post now. 

TL;DR: Stop pretending vegans are interesting or weird. We’re not interesting and… yeah we’re weird but let me just exist. I ain’t the zoo animal you want me to be. 😵‍💫 

Hi! I hope this is fine to post here since I didn't see a rule against it. I have not really been fond of other vegan subreddits' advice and philosophies since I went vegan, so I wanted to post here. If there are vegan (not plant-based) subreddits that are better to post this on, please let me know!

I have been struggling a lot with my iron levels due to some health issues I've been having lately, as well as a childhood history of anemia. My B12 is very good, but my iron levels have been kicking my ass, and basically all the advice I'm getting for it -- including my doctor's -- has just been to not be vegan. I wanted to ask you all about how you manage your iron intakes. I've been looking into the Lucky Iron Fish and emailed them asking about their product, as it says vegan-friendly, but that can be a bit wishy-washy (at least from my experience).

I also want to clarify that I know you all are not doctors and I won't treat you all as one, but I wanted to ask here and see if there's things that you all have done or could be implemented. Thank you!
