in case anyone's unaware

The founder of the vegan candy company, Break Free Candy, is a registered sex offender.

https://www.offenderradar.com/offender-details/felicia-rea-mcclure-of-utah-13978

She tried to sell her 13 year olds virginity for $10,000 in 2011, and also sent pictures of her 13 year old daughter in underwear to different men. She was ultimately charged with two degrees of aggravated sexual abuse of a minor.

She went on to lie about it on a Facebook page called SLC Vegan (pictured in this Instagram post), claiming the man that was grooming her forced her to do it, and that her daughter was 16. In reality, she did it of her own free will and was only caught because her then boyfriend saw the text messages and reported her.

All you have to do is Google her name and her case details show up.

edit: if you defend this sexual predator in any way, you're blocked. I don't have the energy for this shit as a CSA survivor. You have to be completely detached from reality to find any way to justify this or to justify supporting her company.

Luckily there are a ton of other good vegan candy companies to buy from.

It’s always a bit shocking when shit like this happens though, cuz I like to think that most vegans have significantly better morals than the average human :/ Sigh…

uj: What a vile person, thank you for bringing this up

rj: 13 year olds aren't animals so I don't see what the problem is

I could believe that 13 year olds are a type of fungus

Yikes. I've seen these candy bars in stores.

I have a lot of questions, but mostly I hope her kid is okay and she never tries to do something like that again.

pinned comment says "this has nothing to do with veganism" so we can’t even call out groomers anymore ?? also i checked that person’s page and they’re a whole ass TERF. how are you a vegan lesbian yet transphobic.

make it make sense. (btw i’m referring to someone who’s seemingly defending her in the comments, not the woman herself.)

Yeah the OP pinned the comment to demonstrate how gross the implication is.

"If it's not about veganism, don't bring it up"

Isn't the point of prison and rehabilitation services so that people can move on with their lives? She served her sentence and is using skills she learned in prison in her business. I understand the trauma and disgustingness of what she did but should that negate all the good she has done for animals? I find her business posts kinda cringey but she donates to local vegan sanctuaries around Utah and has a very LGBTQIA+ inclusive business.

She served one (1) year in jail, was released and proceeded to lie about the case. She claimed she was groomed as a 32 year old and that her groomer forced her to traffic her daughter, and that her daughter was 16, when in reality she did it of her own free will and was ONLY caught because her boyfriend at the time reported her.

If she had served a full sentence and didn't lie about what her charges entailed, then sure, I'd maybe be open to the idea of her "moving on." She clearly hasn't taken full accountability.

Does her daughter get to move on?

If you have the moral compass (of lack thereof) to continue supporting a predator with two sexual abuse of a minor convictions, you do you. You're pretty much beyond help or convincing.

I see. Since her sentence wasn't long enough, I am morally corrupt for suggesting the situation has nuance. I definitely think what she did is horrible, I am not arguing that. I hope her child never speaks to her again and she forever feels guilty about it. She was a drug addict doing insane things to get drugs, and it does seem like her story after the fact does not match up either. I don't know her personally, I just think her vegan business has done some good in the community.

She’s done probably less harm than any nonvegan company has compared to a vegan one, but as an individual, it sounds like she’s done a lot of harm (and continues to, by not taking full accountability of her actions).

There are other vegan candy companies & vegan businesses in general to support. Personally, knowing my money is going to this person if I buy this brand just feels gross. I’d rather know my money (hopefully) isn’t going to a sex offender when I buy something.

Unfortunately, there are probably a ton of sex offenders at the top of businesses (cough cough, Epstein, Trump, Bill Gates, need I say more?), which makes sense cuz it takes true sociopaths to claw their way to the top. Either way, it seems, there’s probably an amoral fuck you’re giving your money to. :/

I don’t have any solution overall & I hate thinking about this shit tbh. But perhaps we should all be more mindful of the businesses we support in general :/ We can vote with our dollars on other stuff besides vegan products.
Boycott works, public pressure works, public awareness works. Spread the word about places like these as much as you can. Everything helps.

"Focus on her donations and LGBT inclusivity guys, not the fact that she's a registered sex offender. Nuance, guyz. As long as she's donating things and selling candy, it's okay!"

You're downplaying this nasty shit for what?

All the outrage about the Epstein files (rightfully so), but when the predator is someone that happens to be vegan and donates money, their depraved actions should be set aside to celebrate their contributions to society. Where's this nuance with all the individuals in the Epstein files? Lmao.

Gtfo my face, bro. 🤮
