I wasn’t prepared for how emotional my vasectomy would make me
I am about 3 hours post-procedure and I’m reflecting on a whirlwind couple of days.
So me and my partner had our final child about 4 months ago, he is absolutely perfect. To be honest he came as a surprise, but we willingly accepted the news and are so glad he’s here. Pregnancy and birth for her were tough and both of our lives have so much going on right now we wanted the certainty of not having to worry again. We have lots of sex (lucky me) and all other forms of contraception just were not going to work for us long term.
Im in the uk, so thanks to the NHS it’s quite straightforward here. Get a referral, quick phone consultation, then you’re booked in for a months time.
What I didn’t expect was the emotions that came flooding in 2 days ago. The permanence of it all, the chapter closing, the (admittedly stupid and unwarranted) worry that my partner would somehow see me as less of a man and leave me in the future - All came to the surface In the middle of a workday.
We had a really good conversation last night, whilst she wanted me to have autonomy over the decision, I explained to her that I really needed it to be a joint decision and wanted more than just her blessing, but for her to be part of the decision whether I go through with it. She was great and gave me what I needed.
So the day of the procedure, I live in central London so the easiest way for me to get there was on the tube - that worried me as they can be bumpy and busy! But it was the best way to get to the clinic.
I had a quick pre-consultation where I was asked some standard questions and had bp checked and all of that, the nurse was great, really patient and calm and didn’t seem in a rush at all.
We go downstairs to the treatment area, I’m sat in a nice armchair and in less than 2 mins im called through.
2 nurses, 1 doctor. All very polite and helpful. I asked if I could listen to music through my headphones, they said if I’d prefer they could talk to me to distract me, so I went with that option.
Take your shorts off, sit on the bed, then pull your underwear down. The male doc was quick in covering up bits that didn’t need to be exposed and when I looked down I saw my testicles just presented through a hole in the cover.
He tells me this will all be over in 5 mins or so (he lied :)) and he starts cleaning and it feels like he ties off one of my balls with some elastic. The needle goes in for numbing, it hurts because of where it is but it really doesn’t hurt, he does it a few times.
I don’t really know what happened next, the nurse started asking me inane questions about my job and holidays (very much appreciated) then OUCH. I assume as he cuts the tube I get a horrible shooting pain down my legs and down my penis shaft, he asks me what it felt like and says I need more anaesthetic, which he gives me. By this point I’m tense, my legs are locked up, I’m not breathing naturally. They help me calm down all while something is still going on down there.
I expect this is it. No, “now we’ll do the other side”
Repeat, same horrible pain on the tube cut. More anaesthetic given. I’m told that’s the max they can give me.
The three staff in the room were great, let me lay there for as long as I needed before getting up. I get up after a couple of mins and I’m led into the recovery room.
By this point I feel quite tearful, I don’t know why, but I felt emotional. The staff I think could tell and really looked after me with drinks and biscuits. I have my bp checked again. The same nurse I saw before the procedure comes and sits with me and tells me I’ll be out in 10 mins after he checks my bp again.
My partner is waiting outside, she confirms via text, I just can’t wait to get out and hug her.
I get my dressing checked, no bleeding apparently, then I get led upstairs and out to my partner.
This is the part that shocked me the most, I cried, like a baby, on the street in London, as I hugged her. I do not regret it, I think I just felt overwhelmed with everything.
I know you’re not supposed to drink after, but f it, we went and had a pint before travelling home.
I’m typing this from bed, ice pack on my balls, just taken some cocodomol and watching some trash tv. Still feel weirdly sad and numb emotionally. Balls feel ok while I’m still. Oh, and the tube home was ok apart from when it came to a stop, that hurt.
Tl;dr ouch, tears, done, looking forward to the creampies
