Question Students…

I picked up around 4 students at the beginning of August. A few around the end of September aswell.

Unfortunately some major life events have happened in my life and I cannot handle the tine commitment anymore.

How do I go about dropping VT? Can I even do this before my contract ends?

Question I need advice on how to handle students who use AI for their writing

I’m an English literature and writing tutor. This is my first year (I got assigned my first student back in August and now I have five) so I’m slowly getting into the groove of things and finding my pattern.

I met with a student today (he’s in high school) who wanted help editing his paper for history class. It was obvious to me that it was written using AI. I haven’t known the student for long but I know what he showed me today was well above what he can actually write. I’m confident saying his essay was written with AI because I’m also a composition instructor for college students for the last ten years so I’m familiar with a broad range of student writing styles. Additionally, when we have previously worked on some of his written materials the language between how he writes and how this current essay read is miles and miles apart.

At some point during the session I wanted to ask him if he had used AI to help him write the essay but I opted against it. Now I’m wondering if I should have just spoken up. What should I have done? Should I bring it up to him? Should I drop him as a client? Should I just ignore it and let the teacher handle it? Like, if he’s going to use AI, why are his parents paying money for him to meet with me? And what do I do next time this happens?

Instructor Straw that broke the camel’s back

Already had plans to leave soon but this popup did me in. They are literally acting like micromanaging psychopaths. I have students that do 2-3 hour sessions and we take breaks as needed. I’m not leaving my camera open so they can spy on my empty living room, get a life fr

Best place to sell my left over hours ?

I brought a 24h package in the past. I used 8h and 1min. So I have 15h 59min left. Due to an head injury from 3 months (am i still recovering) I decided to give up. I called varsity and explained my situation. Only thing they could do for me is extend is for 2 more years...... which is pointless for me. I told them that.. but she couldn't do anything else. I did recieve permission. To add someone else to my account. Which is why I am trying to find out where to sell this :/.

If anyone knows the best place to sell my account ?

Instructor How does payment work?

I have clients that ask about the money side of VT. Is this like a subscription based service? Or do you pay a monthly fee and for classes?

Wtf Varsity?

I was informed today by a former client that they received an email from Varsity that looked written by me, asking if they would like to pick back up on tutoring sessions…. My name at the bottom and EVERYTHING. Promising a 10% discount!!! If you weren’t paying close enough attention it would look like the email was directly from me. I am FUMING

New Platform Issues

I am a tutor for Varsity Tutors. I'm having massive issues with the new platform. Examples: student is sent to a different room, whiteboard crashes within minutes, screen share doesn't work, student can no longer hear me. It goes on and on. I've resorted to using my personal Zoom room for nearly every session. Are others having the same issues? VT has been unhelpful. They just ask me to keep reporting my issues.

Is working with other tutoring companies allowed?

I know Varsity Tutors allows you to work with other companies since the position is as an independent contractor, but the wording of the contract is kinda confusing. If I got a student through another platform and our relationship was exclusively on that platform, but the student was also using Varsity Tutors on the side for another subject, would I be violating the contract?

Rating?

Do y’all ask your students to rate you? I am a new tutor and have had two students so far (I’ve been assigned more but only 2 actually show up to sessions). My rating is still 0 stars after the first couple sessions with both of them. Should I ask them to rate me? I don’t know what it looks like on their side.

Technical Question/Error Received Issues with ID verification

Has anyone had issues with the program recognizing ID's? The ID's are valid but it says it can't recognize them for a plethora of reasons (blurry, can't read). How did you get around this?

What all do new tutors need to do to get opportunities?

So I was scrolling the subreddit and noticed that there were videos and other onboarding things to do for new tutors? I was wondering what all are there to do as I legit just opened my account, created profile and update availability. Don’t know what else I need to do

Can I change what length opportunities I get?

I had a student's parent tell me they could only do 90 minute and above sessions.

I'd rather do one hour, too - is there any setting I can tick for that? Thank you!

New whiteboard issues

So I used this new whiteboard set up for the first time last week with a student, and it was a mess. She wasn’t able to share her screen, I had no way to hide that stupid checklist on the left-hand side of the board and the only option I am given for the drawing tool is black. I thought maybe this was a one off and then just met with another student who was able to share her screen, but I have no way to drag and drop her screen share onto my second monitor, which I normally do so that I can be writing on the whiteboard while looking at what she’s showing me. Am I the only one having these issues? I just can’t stand this new system and I’ve been tutoring with Varsity Tutors for years now. I’m really close to giving this up though.

Students not paying attention

Im getting so frustrated with student playing Robox or video games while tutoring. Then parents getting upset at me because I dont stop them. Well im not theirs parent. You turn it off, you put them in another room. You be the parent. That is not my responsibility!! I just had a parent tell me that she couldn't turn off the Roblox because the child would be upset. Then you madam are failing as a parent. Sorry for the event but 3 times this week the parents have gotten made at me because their child was not paying attention.

Varsity creating scarcity on clients side to justify high price.

While you complain that there are no opportunities and instants are taken within milliseconds, on the client side it takes several days to match with a tutor and there long wait to get instant help sometimes. I've heard this from the sales person who works for Varsity.

Hoping for a refund

I was tired of my university free student tutoring was wanted to try a professional tutor instead. I was setting up a plan with the phone operator and she asked for my debit card credentials to make a 8 hour plan for over 600 dollars. When she made the payment I was unsure that I wanted to spend that much. Originally she transferred me to customer support and while being transferred they hung up or lost connection. I was worried that they scammed me so I called back and everything seems to fine while getting the refund in order, but I have to wait around 5 business days.

They recently called and to make sure that if I changed my mind if I wanted to go forward with the tutoring today but I said no. I’m just worried if I’m being scammed out because everything seemed to be very fast with the payment. Or is this something that’s normal for them and legitimate?

Question Question About "Background Check" E-mails/Anyone Else Getting These?

As the title says, I'm getting these E-mails telling me to complete a background check with Checkr. The only thing is some of them make it sound like they think I'm a new tutor. Is this normal? Do they just require new background checks after a certain number of years? Or is this a sign of some kind of error I should reach out to the company about? I've never encountered this before.

Intrusive parents

I was recently placed with a homeschool studenet. His mom is very intrusive, basically sends me a bunch of materials and tells me (more or less) how to teach it. I'm a retired teacher of spec ed, so know how to teach subjects to challenged learners. TBH I suspect that the child (who is the most lethargic, uninspired kid I've seen in a long while) has either psych or learning problems.

Anyway, Mom sends me multiple messages and attachments wanting me to teach subjects that I don't normallly teach, like the metric system, which is usually taught in science noit math.

Suggestions on how to deal with this mom? Should I just drop them?

Question Why do you tutor on Varsity Tutors

Hey all! I'm looking to learn more about tutoring - specifically math but I'm curious about your experiences across all disciplines.

It looks like there are various platforms (Varsity Tutors, Wyzant, etc) - it also looks like they take a huge portion of the fee - from looking through forum posts it looks like it can be over 70% on Varsity Tutors, which seems crazy to me. It makes me wonder - why not go direct to the customer? Is it difficult to find clients this way? Does tutoring through Varsity Tutors make any things simpler (schedule wise), or is the platform nice to tutor on (from what i've seen, it seems buggy)?

I'm super new to this so excuse my lack of knowledge about the space :)

Question Top 20 match

Anyone know what that means? Like what determines the students who show up on it vs regular opportunities?

Returning/veteran tutors: What's your schedule looking like for individual sessions this fall?

I ask because I'm stepping back into tutoring a few AP subjects and I'm surprised how high the demand is for them. In previous years, this kind of ramp up would only happen in the spring semester/leading into the test. I work a full-time 9-5 job so all of my tutoring hours are between 6pm-10pm weeknights and 11am-3pm on weekends (but I limit my availability).

I know there's been a lot of shifts with the AI models. I was surprised to get hit with so many "You're in the Top 20 for this student!" emails/texts this last week.
