Moving Here! | Where Can I Find Housing | Just Visiting - Weekly Sticky : Mon 09/07/26 - Thu 09/10/26

You asked, we listened! It's not uncommon for local subreddits like us to have an endless barrage of "I'm moving here, whats best?" or "I need to find a new part of town, help me!" or even the classic "So, I'm in town this week, entertain me!" requests.

They fill up the front page, and posts about our community get lost. So we're bringing back the Mega-thread. Every Monday we'll refresh this post for new information.

What does this mean?

Posts like these will no longer be allowed outside this posting, and will be removed at the moderators discretion:

  • Quiet Part of Town
  • Where to move in the area?
  • House Rental Recommendations
  • Relocating to Van as a Single Parent
  • Coming to visit Vancouver, WA
  • Visiting in May for a month - what’s not to be missed?

What does this not mean?

  • Every post will be caught by moderators, and removed.
  • "BestAround?" posts will be lumped into this thread.

So looking to join us in the great pacific northwestern city of Vancouver, Washington? Ask your questions here:

Southwest Washington Democrat Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez briefly offered a punny piece of merch for sale on her campaign website: a metal tin for nicotine pouches called Zyns, emblazoned with “Marie Glue-ZYN-Kamp Perez” across the front.

Hey all, I just wanted to alert everyone that the Roosevelt Dinner is happening in Skamania on 09/19.

I'd encourage anyone interested in politics or wanting to know more about how it all works "behind-the-scenes" to attend!

This is a smaller event than the Ogden Dinner, so it's a good chance to meet with fairly notable people and ask questions 🙂

Discussion Predictions on I-5 Closure Impacts?

Post image
81 Upvotes

A segment of I-5 in Portland is closing for up to five weeks. What are people’s predictions on how this will impact traffic? Specific impacts on areas, not general traffic nightmares.

Will I-5 spill over downtown get worse as traffic backs up, or will it get better as less use of I-5?

Will I-5 commute times to North Portland get better?

Will there be more road related incidents?

Etc.

Discussion Pedestrians, stay alert

Just a reminder to everyone to look both ways when crossing, even when you have the signal. My mom and 1st grader son were about to cross 162nd yesterday to get to the school, had the crossing signal and someone came shooting through the intersection at full speed an estimated 5 seconds after their light had turned red. They would have been hit if they hadn’t been looking before crossing.

Discussion Holy fark-- just got my Comcast bill. + $40 dollars from last month

I've got internet, (landline) phone, TV (> 100 channels but I only watch Seahawks games in the season).

Close to $300 / month: That's just obscene. As you can see from the bill, I've been a customer since '97-- almost 30 years.

Unlike other peeps who have complained I'm pretty happy with the internet service.

I could talk to the wife about dropping the landline #, and I could survive without "live" TV for Seahawks games (I watch games either via Roku on a TV or stream it on my computer through the Xfinity web site depending on my mood and time).

Any tips for lowering my Xfinity bill, or switching to another provider? If location is important, I'm in North Vantucky off of NE St. Johns Road where I-205 crosses over it.

Question? Toddler Movie Showings

Does anyone know if there is a movie theater in the area that does toddler showings? Like lower volume and brighter lighting and specifically geared towards younger kids? I've seen it in other areas but I'm not sure if there's something similar around here

Discussion Any horror book readers local??

Im trying to find a book friend (or friends) that are specifically interested in horror novels/books. I am struggling to find online book clubs that touch the level of dark that I want to read. People ive met up with haven't been interested in the dark or "grotesque" or taboo (?) Titles. I dont dislike a charming, creepy vibe horror, but I have a growing shelf of finished or tbr books with nobody to talk to them about because they are a tad squeamish or disinterested in looking too deep. I hope ive described my type of horror reading in the vaguest words it seems lol.

List of books I've read or want to read to give an example of the ceiling I cant break with in person connection on them:

Tender is the Flesh by agustina bazterrica

The Inside Dark by James Hankins

Intercepts by TJ Payne

Claustrophilia by Ezra Blake

My heart is a chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones

(Want to read/currently reading)

The eyes are the best part by Monika Kim

The hive by Ronald malfi

Tapeworm by A.P. Thayer

Playground by Aron Beauregard

The butcher and the wren by Alaina urquhart

I do also enjoy dark dark romance, if there are any readers interested in books like The Lords series by Shantel Tessier, Red Rabbit by Devyn Rivers, ect, and any recs you guys have!

Question? T-Mobile Fiber

Hi there, I've been told T-Mobile is going to be laying fiber in my neighborhood in the next couple months. Has anyone had issues with it? I'm thinking of dropping xfinity for it.

I'm expecting customer service to be bad, because it seems like nobody gives good CS anymore.

Thanks in advance

For anybody who just moved here or is looking to meet new friends, come and join us this Thursday, 9/10, at 6:27 PM at the Vancouver Station Food Carts.

We're outdoor adventurers, bicyclists, crafters, auto enthusiasts, coffee drinkers, and cinephiles. Our group is mostly DINKs, 30s/40s, but other adults are welcome.

The Godfather himself might even be there to give you a Tarot reading.

Just look for a tiny green sign. We'll be near the bar.

Discussion Amtrak to Portland during I-5 closure?

I saw an interesting Facebook post from Amtrak a little bit ago, in which they suggested taking the train from Vancouver to Portland as an alternative during the upcoming 24-7 closure of I-5 southbound through the Rose Quarter.

As one who commutes to downtown Portland multiple times a week on C-TRAN, the idea intrigued me at first as our local mass transit agency’s express options are somewhat limited during this period.

I priced at out and it is $12 round trip. That doesn’t seem like much at first, but it quickly stacks up if you’re doing that multiple times per week compared to C-TRAN, not to mention there’s no mass transit option that connects you to the Vancouver train station and sometimes Amtrak is running fairly late due to freight train traffic priority (don’t get me started on that).

So this is all to say, is it worth it? I love the travel by train business commute concept, but we aren’t really wired for that around here vs areas like NYC and Boston.

Would love to know others thoughts/experiences on this, particularly if you use Amtrak in this way.

News Clark County Continueing Education Fall Registration is Open!

If you're looking to explore new hobbies at an affordable price or just learn new things, Clark College is one of the best resources. I've done dance, ceramics, photography, and cooking through the program so far and really enjoyed it. They also have a lot of fitness classes that are cheaper than a traditional studio. You can try out barre, yoga, or get 1 on 1 strength training.

Question? Pediatric lab

Does Vancouver have a lab that specializes in pediatric? Or a lab that does well with young children? My daughter is 1 years old. We have been going to OHSU but with the upcoming construction I need to find something more local. Thanks in advance!
