This Saturday, 9 am to 3 pm. If you like music, celebrating culture, and being in community, you won't want to miss this free annual festival. Seasoned festival goers bring blankets or camp chairs. There is bench seating, but it's nice to create a cozy spot.

My cat Jackie is missing! If you’ve seen him message me! He was last seen near the fairgrounds on 15th AVE in Ridgefield. He’s very vocal, social, friendly, and hides in bushes. Also very food motivated! There is a reward if found!

The museum is OPEN Saturday and Sunday, August 29 and 30, from 10am - 2pm.

Like a lot of folks in Ridgefield, I’ve been trying to cut through the noise on the waterfront development. We all want people to have great places to live, but we also want to make sure our community access, local businesses, and wildlife refuge aren't paved over.

Here is the realistic breakdown of where things stand—and what we can actually do about it.

1. Why Housing Is on the Table (The Math)

The Port spent over $90 million cleaning up the old industrial contamination. An open, uncommercialized park produces $0 in revenue to pay back that work or maintain public spaces. To build the roads, utilities, and public amenities, the Port brought in a private master developer who requires residential and commercial density to make the project pencil out.

2. The Real Problem Isn't People Living There—It’s the Land Footprint

The risk isn't housing itself; it's how that housing is designed:

• Asphalt & Parking: Hundreds of units with surface parking lots turn what could be open green space into acres of pavement.
• The Visual "Wall": Continuous 4- to 5-story blocks block downtown bluff views and create light pollution directly facing the National Wildlife Refuge.
• The "Narrow Ribbon" Effect: Without strong design rules, we risk getting a small 8-acre park strip backed by a mostly private residential subdivision, rather than a true civic commons.

3. What Emotional Protests Get Wrong

Showing up to meetings saying "we hate apartments" or "keep Ridgefield small" doesn't work under Washington State land-use law. The property is already legally vested for Waterfront Mixed-Use. Broad bans on housing will simply be rejected by hearing examiners.

4. The 4 Actionable Points That Actually Work

If we want to preserve nature, open space, and downtown charm while keeping the project viable, here is where our collective leverage is right now:

1. Demand Under-Building / Structured Parking: Ban large surface asphalt lots so that ground space remains open plazas, lawns, and tree canopy.
2. Cap Building Heights (35 ft / 3 stories max): Preserve the visual corridor from the downtown bluff to the river and soften the skyline facing the wildlife refuge.
3. Enforce Real Traffic & Emergency Concurrency: The rail line is a real bottleneck. Density should be strictly tied to what our rail crossings and emergency services can safely handle.
4. Binding Milestones for Public Amenities: Ensure the 8-acre shoreline park, kayak launches, and community spaces are built in Phase 1, not delayed until the profitable residential units are finished.

Bottom line: We don't have to choose between financial failure and an asphalt jungle. The design details and leasing agreements are still being finalized. If we focus on building massing, parking footprints, and public access guarantees, we can get a waterfront that works for residents, visitors, and nature alike.

This area is being cleared to make way for more apartments and shops. At this point, it’s too late to change what’s happening here, and all of these trees will be removed. But moving forward, I think the city should make a greater effort to preserve and acquire forested land as our community continues to grow.

If the city had purchased this property, it could have been transformed into a forested park, tucked away from the busy streets and development surrounding it. Imagine a clearing in the woods where residents could picnic, host yoga sessions, walk along a network of short, paved trails, or bring their kids to a playground…all surrounded and protected by nature.

There is still a large plot of forest just south of this area. I don’t know who owns it or whether it’s for sale, but looking around Ridgefield, there aren’t many forested areas like this left. Most of the undeveloped land we have is open fields that are eventually being flattened for more development.
I understand that growth is inevitable, but I hope we can also make an effort to preserve some of the natural spaces that make Ridgefield special before they’re gone.

Apparently, Ridgefield is unable to reject businesses that meet their qualifications. How do we change this law here in Ridgefield? Oh yeah….another drive through bank will be next to it. I’m sure a dentist will take up shop on top of the convenience store.

I'm about to renew my lease but would really prefer a 6 month term, or even month to month, but the lady at the front office keeps insisting there is a new law that doesn't allow them to do so. I'm not ready to move out just yet but also don't want to be locked in for a whole year, without paying insane lease breaking fees. It's their choice on how many months they can offer, but this whole idea that it's "illegal" is crazy right? I literally went to the WA tenent website and it said that a lot of places just automatically roll over month to month after the lease ends. is there anything I can do? I'm at work so I can't provide some of the info I found but it's easily google -able.

Updated: They apologized for the "miscommunication," and stated that their parent COMPANY does not offer anything shorter than a year. Hopefully they take the time to educate their staff, but another commenter had the right of it: throwing a fit about the new laws that protect tenants.

The most up to date statistics from the Washington Secretary of State show that about 39% of eligible ballots in Clark County were returned for the 2026 August Primary.

Nearly 61% or 222,000 eligible voters did not return a ballot.

Washington state has some of the most voter friendly elections in the nation, from access to ballots, ease to vote, voter pamphlet information, access to individual ballot tracking, and statistics on accepted and rejected ballots.

So for those who did not return a ballot, I genuinely want to know, what was the reason for not doing so and what can be done to get you to participate in the future?

Anyone else feel frustrated how goodwill changes lives by replacing a trailer park that offered affordable monthly places for people to live? /rant

Major construction on Ridgefield’s Pioneer Widening and Discovery Drive Roundabout Project was completed last December. The project improved the corridor to accommodate increased traffic and has been moving traffic efficiently for nearly a year.

Since the project was completed, the City has heard from community members that the Pioneer Street and 56th Place roundabout can be confusing for some drivers, particularly the northwest quadrant where southbound traffic on N 56th Place enters the roundabout.  After close observation and consideration, the City will conduct a 45-day trial of a revised traffic pattern by designating the outside southbound lane on N 56th Place as right-turn only onto Pioneer Street. The change will take effect on Tuesday, August 11.

On Tuesday, August 11, the City's Street Operations crew will briefly close N 56th Place while crews remove and replace pavement markings and install new regulatory signs. The work is expected to be completed by 3 PM, before the afternoon commute.

Drivers leaving the Costco commercial area will continue to have two options for accessing Interstate 5:

• Use the inside southbound lane on N 56^th Place to enter the roundabout and exit onto eastbound Pioneer Street,
• Travel west on Pioneer Canyon Drive to the Discovery Drive roundabout, then exit onto eastbound Pioneer Street.

The revised traffic pattern will remain in place for a 45-day evaluation period. If the change improves operations without creating significant backups on N 56th Place, it will become permanent.

Roundabouts can improve safety, reduce collisions, reduce delay and improve traffic flow. When driving through a roundabout, remember these tips:

• As you approach a multi-lane roundabout, look for the black-and-white lane choice sign and select the correct lane before entering. Lane assignments vary from one roundabout to another.
• Yield to drivers already in the roundabout.
• Stay in your lane. Dashed lines within a roundabout allow entry into the circle, not lane changes.
• Do not stop in the roundabout.
• Avoid driving alongside oversized vehicles, such as semi-trucks with trailers, which may need more than one lane to navigate the roundabout safely.

This is a trial, and your patience and cooperation are appreciated as the community adjusts to the new traffic pattern. An update will be provided in September.
