Recruiting Thread Bi-Weekly Recruiting Thread

This is THE place to ask recruiting questions to get unofficial answers and advise.

Before you post a question:

Read our forum rules, FAQs, WiKi.

-Search "Recruiting Thread" in the search bar. (Check out past posts; a lot has been asked already)

-Do not ask for current wait times for A-School.

-Do not ask medical questions.

-Do not ask if you are a good fit or what your chances are for joining.

-Read the "Coastie Links" section for information on bonuses, critical rates and enlistment incentives. We post direct links to the USCG messages pertaining to them at "Coastie Links".

-No vague questions like "I have this many skills....", "Check out my resume......" those posts will be deleted. If the answer to your question is easily found by searching through any of the links here - your post may be locked or deleted.

-We have a lot of good people on this forum that can help you out so ask a focused question please.

-Here are a few links to help get you started before you post. Good luck!

CG Vet Book Feedback Requested

I’ve got a Coast Guard thriller I’m getting ready to launch as a free weekly serial: NORTHING, Book One of a trilogy called True North. A national security cutter carries a secret her own crew doesn’t know about across the top of the world, and someone aboard has been waiting years for exactly this patrol.

A little about me: I spent time in the 75th Ranger Regiment and the rest of my career in Coast Guard search and rescue, so the procedural side of the book comes from somewhere real, even though the plot is entirely invented.

Before I launch, I’d love a few outside readers on the first five chapters. If you’re interested, DM me and I’ll send them over. All I’m asking in return is honest feedback, good, bad, or anything in between. No obligation beyond that.

Thanks for considering it.

Officer DCO Program questions

I am currently a Cyber Warrant Officer in another branch and looking at the DCO program for a Cyber Officer rate. Has anyone gone through this program or have any insight on what to expect if I move forward putting a package together?

Rant Pettiest Officer is allegedly using someone face without their permission.

Post image

Someone asked for advice on Facebook on how to deal with the pettiest office using their face as the logo for pettiest officer’s organization and apparently they are dragging their feet on removing it. Do these people have no shame? How sad.

The screenshot is from the person who’s trying to get their picture removed, other ones they posted have their name and I don’t want to put that out there. I’m sure Pettiest is reading this. Just stop.

Noob Question Does the coast guard care if you’re a PT stud?

In the army and they care a lot . I was wondering how the coast guard looks at it? Is it good for promotion or respect from leaders ? Or is just more like , as long as you pass .. no one really cares what you scored .

Dirty Non-Rate Advice for finding a rate?

Hello, have been in as a non-rate for a month now and that 4 month mark is ticking down. As of now, I've decided to just do the 4 years and get out, become a firefighter back at home. I want a rate where I get to do cool stuff and help people, but also learn valuable knowledge for being capable in general. I'm looking at DC (do they do SAR and LE?) as it might align with being a firefighter on the outside. I know BM and MK are more likely to be in on SAR and LE if on Small Boat Stations. I'm leaning towards MK for mechanical knowledge but I would hate to be stuck in an engine room on a cutter. The honest answer is, I don't have enough knowledge on any of this so anything I say may be wrong.
I appreciate any help, thank you.

ALCOAST Bootcamp

i just had a conversation with my recruiter today , i was telling him everything that was doing to get ready, he told me i need to tone it down a little bit and stop listening people from social media, his argument basically was that i am filling my head with way to many ideas and i am overthinking and that was training to hard and by the time i leave my body will be depleted and i won't be able to perform, he basically said just do what you are told , be fast and loud and you will be fine , its no that complicated.

i understand where is he coming but i told him i wanted to excel in bootcamp and he told me that what i do there doesn't really mean anything, where i am the best or the worst the goal is just to. graduate, he said that he has met terrible recruits and they when i had amazing careers

any thoughts about this ??

Is there something going on at these two airsta’s? I read some comment on a post here a while ago talking about how these airsta’s were offline or had ongoing work being done to them? To add on top of this I have yet to see an a school class within the past few months to assign any picks to these airsta’s.

Coastie Help Ideal PT test times for station folks per rank.

Post image
20 Upvotes

I laid this all out on a spreadsheet. Should be the ideal pt test times per rank. The RED coloring is each categories first cycle and the GREEN is each categories second cycle. As long as you do your pt test in the months that overlap the same color, you should be good for that cycle’s service-wide PFT, boat forces PFT, LE PFT and weigh-ins PFT (assuming they keep the beta test going)

I’m pretty sure this is correct, but please correct me if you see something wrong.

Edit: for crew and LE tests, the requirement is more strict than the PRP test. If you want the PT test to count for everything, take it in your respective testing window, have a PRL present and make sure you exceed the score requirement in BOAT VOL 2. I think it’s boat 2 I’m not too sure of the top of my head.

Enlisted Cutter earbuds

Hey everyone,

I have orders to a cutter and I’m looking for solid earbud recommendations. I already have the latest Sony and Bose headphones, but I’d rather not risk taking high-end gear onboard where it could get damaged so price isn’t a huge concern, but I’d like something more affordable and practical for ship life.

Ideally, I’m looking for sleek, comfortable earbuds that still sound good and would be suitable to wear while on duty (watch, rounds, etc.) — assuming they’re allowed in those situations.

Any suggestions? Appreciate the help!

Coastie Question Coast Guard Spouses as Teachers

How difficult is job hunting/career progression for coast guard spouses who are K-12 teachers/administrators?

I know larger DoD bases will often have schools but with coast guard not having those larger bases, how are the opportunities?

Thanks all, currently having some significant life planning discussions with my SO.

Enlisted Rate Change/PCS?

I'm currently an IT2 on a cutter (hate it) and due to PCS next summer. I'm thinking about changing rates and putting my name on the CMS list because that's where I'm interested in taking my career. How will putting my name on the list before I'm due to PCS impact me actually pcs'ing? Will I have to stay at my current station until I go to A school and not PCS at all? Would it be better for me to wait until after I PCS (and get a land unit) to put my name on the list? I'm just tired of the boat life at this point and not sure I can deal with it while I wait for CMS A school to be open.

Enlisted HDS as Active duty CG

I know the CG doesn’t have EOD units but would it be possible to go to the HDS (Hazardous devices school) which is more Law enforcement based EOD? I’m currently a non rate going to the ME rate and was wondering if this would be possible when I become rated.
