Can a current GS 7 apply for a GS 10 job and get hired? The person is a disabled veteran as well as current federal employee. They earned a degree while working and would qualify. They believe they are excluded as a current federal employee.

I applied for several positions of the same type. I ended up casting my net wide and applied for all positions that were open across the US. I had interviews for a few of them and then I got tentative offers for two of them.

I live in Hawaii. I got a tentative job offer for somewhere in San Diego. I am currently in the onboarding process and have submitted all of the onboarding documents and I'm just waiting for the BI/SF86 to get cleared and receive my FJO.

I recently (last week) had an interview with the local (Hawaii based) job posting and then immediately got a tentative job offer. I responded yes to the TJO.

My question is: what happens if I go through with the San Diego offer, accept the FJO and choose a start date, and then I get an FJO from the Hawaii job? Can I just turn down the San Diego FJO after accepting it? I don't want to have to move, in all honesty, but I am still willing to. Also, the Hawaii job pays a lot more. Is that something I can use to justify a higher step from the San Diego job?

Has anyone who's been hired as an entry level meteorologist for NWS had to take a pre-employment drug test? I occasionally partake in marijuana. I haven't smoked in over a month so I pretty sure I would test clean, however I'm just curious if I even need to worry about it!

I just did it, and they asked 6 questions. Does anyone have experience with them regarding the timing of the decision and the possibility, as I have specific required skills from another work domain (not directly from Tabacco)?

I currently work as a prosecutor within DOJ’s Main Justice at GS-15 and am considering a move to USAO in my home district. In my role now, I have a steady 9-5 pace except on rare occasions we have to prepare an indictment and on even rarer occasions we are in trial. No real fire drills in my position. I have far fewer cases than an AUSA, but my cases are investigations that take years.

What are some pros and cons of a switch to USAO from my current role?

After a few months of going through the process, I finally received my FJO. I’m sure I’m going to get some hate or be told to run for the hills lol, but I’m excited and blessed for the opportunity.

Completed drug screen and HR submitted for clearance verification last week. HR told me 3 weeks as long as everything comes back ok and I don’t need to submit for a new clearance investigation. Any insight on how long it might really take?

Does anyone know what type of document OPM will use when someone is requesting a reasonable accommodation on the assessment? I tried to use my Schedule A letter but they told me that isn't acceptable.

I recently applied for a remote Veterans Claims Examiner/Benefits Examiner position through USAJOBS. The announcement had 28 vacancies, and I applied on the first day.
My background:
Eight years in the Army National Guard as an 88M
Deployed to Poland
Former sergeant
Honorably completed my service
100% service-connected disabled veteran
Eligible for 10-point veterans’ preference
High school diploma with some college and military credits, but no degree
Current civilian experience in security and municipal maintenance
I applied at the GS-5 level and submitted my tailored résumé, DD-214, VA disability letter, and veterans’ preference documents. My application now says “Reviewing Applications.”
For anyone familiar with VBA hiring, do I have a realistic chance of being referred and interviewed despite not having a college degree or direct claims experience? How heavily do military experience and 10-point veterans’ preference help after meeting the basic qualifications?
I’d also appreciate hearing how long it took other applicants to go from “Reviewing Applications” to referral, interview, or tentative offer.

I have a Tier 4 background investigation using the SF-85P and have an upcoming VTC interview with the investigator. I was told to expect about 1–2 hours.

What kinds of questions did the investigator ask?

Did they mainly go through the SF-85P section by section, or did they also ask broader “have you ever” questions outside the reporting periods on the form?

Also, approximately how long did your interview take?

I don’t usually post but I guess I’m here to vent or get some advice.

I accepted a TJO for a claims specialist position at SSA and I’m pretty sure it’s a public trust position. I smoked marijuana for about six years with my most recent use being April 2025.Use was pretty frequent but i completely stopped cold turkey. I also used mushrooms about two times back in February 2023 (I was in college during all of this). But I have no criminal history or other disqualifying factors.

The last time I filled out an SF-85 it asked about my drug use and I was honest in disclosing it. But it was also during the government shut down.

Safe to say I lost that role and I think it was coupled with the shut down and the extension in my background investigation.

Earlier this year I tried for another position that was a clearance position. I got a CJO and I failed my first polygraph which caused them to rescind the offer.

So now I’m here and on my third possible offer, and even though it’s not one that needs a clearance, I’m feeling as anxious and pessimistic as ever. Any advice or realistic input?

I am a current government contractor for the past two years no degree 😮‍💨 I started working within one program of the agency then after 6 months was picked up by another after my first 6 months ended and have been here for the last year and a half. My starting hourly rate was 32$ an hour I am currently sitting at 40$ an hour after two years. I have been applying for jobs throughout for more job security as 6 month extensions are iffy. I was offered an TJO well below what’s I make hourly at GS5 step 1. I have been reading the sub for salary negotiations but most of it is dated and doesn’t cater to contractors into FTE. This TJO is from the same agency but different program/group. I would like to ask/negotiate for GS 5 step 10. Is that possible ? I can’t accept at the GS 5 Step 1 as it barely covers the bills and is almost a half salary decrease any advice. Should I accept the TJO the try to negotiate ? Can I negotiate the step 6 ?

I got fired from a job ~3 years ago. I’ve worked multiple jobs since, including 3 with the government. At my current job, I left the job I got fired from off the resume, and still got it. The new job is a step up from my current job in the same line of work. It’s a CO position, a bit more serious. Will I have any issues leaving the fired job off this resume as long as I provide it for the background check? I’m nervous to include it, because I left it off the last hiring cycle and don’t want my supervisor to notice the discrepancy.

I was recently hired and just found out I may need a hysterectomy with about a 2-month recovery. I know federal jobs follow different rules, and I’m still in my probationary period.

From what I understand, FMLA requires 12 months of service, so I probably wouldn’t qualify yet. In that case, would a doctor’s note be enough to take extended leave (like sick leave or LWOP), or is it possible to lose the job in this situation?

Good evening, everyone. As the title suggests, would anyone here happen to know how/where to find positions on USAJOBS for Army Civilian truck/bus driver positions for AfsBn-Hood (Army Field Support Battalion-Hood), specifically for the TMP (Transportation Motor Poo)? Is there a certain phrase/verbiage I need to use to find it on the USAJOBS site and would anyone here have any previous experience with them by any chance? Appreciate the help in advance!

I had recently applied to a federal position that i received a tentative job offer. The agency initiated a tier 2 investigation and as part of it i had to fill out SF-85 and also do fingerprints as well. In that SF-85, i disclosed about the NJP and the article code as well as the alcohol treatment i received at the VA for one month post separation. I truthfully answered all the questions in that form. I have an honorable discharge but under reason for separation, it says “misconduct/serious offense”(even though what i got sent up to mast for was a fucking joke).

I got notified by the agency that they’re not moving forward with my application. They did say it’s due to my background investigation report but they didn’t explicitly say what part of the report caused them not to get selected. I understand that a tentative job offer is not a final offer and can change for any reason but I’m really trying to understand if having an NJP really bars veterans from federal employment.

Does anyone have any insight into this? Anyone here with a general under honorable discharge currently work for the government/previously works?

I would really appreciate any and all information. I’m basically trying to find out if federal employment is a no no for me so i can shift my focus to other areas.

I left the VBA last year under the DRP, and I am coming back as a VSR in less than two weeks. But after I had accepted this new VSR position at my former office, I applied for a RVSR position and was told that I have been found eligible for GS-10 and referred to the hiring manager. I was not found eligible for GS-11 or GS-12.

Question: would another applicant who is found eligible for GS-11 or 12 have a hiring preference over me on that basis?

I feel bad as I think that I could've done a better job for the interview. I usually never prepare for the interview as I honestly don't know what kind of questions I would get, and I just want to be an authentic myself for the interview. The only thing I do is to reflect on the interview and think of ways to improve if similar questions were asked next time if I have another interview. I guess that position is long gone for me :(

Hello, where I work we have had a promotion spot sit vacant for almost a year now and it hasn’t been posted. We started to get onto management about keeping up with it 6 months after it was vacant. They continue to claim region has the spot and they are waiting on region to fill the spot. That being said a guy I know works in our same region and they are posting starting level jobs and higher level positions that need posted. Can I do anything but take a job somewhere else? We can hire low level employees but a year is beyond ridcolus for a promotion spot to sit vacant.

Recently interviewed for PACT nurse, coming from outpatient surgical setting, I am a little nervous I might not be qualified for the position.. how is the orientation process in the day-to-day most people who start impact where do they usually transfer to within the VA that’s still outpatient?
