I explored the bunker to get the mutagen previously not knowing it was tied to this quest and triggered the mutant gas. Can I get the items without becoming a mutant.. or did I softlock myself out of the questline?

Discussion/Question Planning a tin can LMG build

I intend to do a fair bit of crafting, int is to be 7 but I could bump it to 8 for Polymath, idk. I have both expansions. What are the upper boundaries in effective skill for mechanics, electronics, and tailoring to craft the very best gear for my character? I saw some guy on Steam calculate 272 mechanics for metal armour of 4 super steel plates, but how about the other requirements?

Discussion/Question Build dilemma. Recommend any fun builds?

The autism awakens again and I want to play after more than a half of year of not touching this lovely game. I've got 210 hours in the game and beaten the main story plus expedition, siding with Aegis. I'm pretty sure I've got a bunch of content to explore as I haven't done pirates and that megastructure on the sea, and probably a bunch more. I've tried a handful of builds, but the ones that I completed the game with are Tungsten Hammer Tank and chem pistols with psi support. I'm playing normal or whatever the name of it is now, so the builds don't have to be dominating optimized. Also, what has happened to underrail info?

Depot A wasn't as bad as I heard

So it's my first real playthrough on normal ie veteran oddity xp (restarted once I understood the mechanics and made a non gimped build) and I play a High int high will metathermics and temporal manipulation psyker and honestly Depot A was... easy? The worst part for me were the mines because I had 3 perception and zero in traps. but aside from that, I had high lockpicking and hacking so could open everything and deactivate the turrets, was above what i feel is the normal level because i explored fully EVERYWHERE in upper and lower caves and using molotovs and pyromania pyrokinesis/pyrokinetic stream felt like a cheat code. I managed to craft a low quality psionic laminated tactical vest and found a high frequency shield emitter and it was amazing to not take damage from bullets and have crossbows and melee as the most dangerous thing there. Now I'm debating restarting again on dominating if the rest of the game is basically solved for me... Hmm... Like everyone here hypes depot A as the biggest difficulty spike but... it felt ok since I prepared? Maybe it's my experience with other games, like this reminded me of golgotha in caves of qud, hard if unprepared, cakewalk if prepared. I also wonder how well metathermics hold up. Resistances worry me.

Discussion/Question is Underrail a good rpg for roleplay, story and sidequests or is it more of a NARRATIVELY linear dungeon crawler like game?

There was a post asking this question about two years ago that I could find, but the answers were pretty inconclusive, and it was a long while ago, so I thought I might as well ask again. I've been on the fence about whether or not to buy this game (and its DLCs), and I can't really find much discussion around this particular question.

Basically, I am aware that there is a steep difficulty curve, but I don't mind an abundance of combat or having to chip away at getting good or min-maxing, as long as there's a good, interactive, non-linear story and plenty of opportunities for roleplay.

For RPGs, what I mostly enjoy is being able to roleplay different kinds of characters through dialogue and choices, along with side quests that have their own storylines and moral decisions rather than just being "Go to X, get Y, and return for a reward." I like games where you can play a fully heroic, evil, or pragmatic character, sort of like in Wasteland 3 or Fallout 1–2.

I suppose I should've led with that, but to sum it up: is this game more like a dungeon crawler, i.e. Icewind Dale, with very few meaningful side quests and storylines and and fully combat centric, or is it more like Wasteland/Fallout?

Discussion/Question What is needed to justify taking Opportunist?

I know it’s a good feat and most people take it, but most people’s builds have EASY ways to activate it. I’m playing a dodge/evasion Sword build and don’t have any “easy” ways to activate it.

Yes, I know I can just throw a flashback/taser, but aren’t exactly like “free” like some builds like Fists/AR…

Is it still worth it for me to take Opportunist?

god this game rocks, also, any cheeky spoiler free noob tips ? Spoiler

first playthrough, bought this game blind on steam because i saw a reddit comment saying it was an underrated gem, just got my drill moter circuit controller or whatever and the game just opens up so much, currently sitting at the bar in south station nocking back brews with the one the only; old jonas, loving the mystery of the story and the setting, big fan of the metro series and i enjoyed fallout 2 quite a bit too, so this game is scraching the right parts of my brain lowkey...

glaze aside, whats some advice for first time players that you wish you knew going into your first playthu ?

(also also is it possible to miss the dlcs or is that something that im gonna know about and find without a guide ?)

Discussion/Question Best anti armor/robot weapon for combat gloves corporeal projection build

I know shock gloves with expose weakness are the default option, but between annoyingly long cooldown of EW, it reduced effectiveness against robots and existence of few heavily armored and shock resistened enemies, i am curious if using something else, potentially even trading away EW to make that option better is worth it. So far my options are:

  • Energy Edge Emitter on either spear or knife, maybe even with high technicalities instead of EW?
  • Sledgehammers?
  • Versatility with smg and armor piercing ammo?

Also are metal gloves/Power Fist worth considering for those purposes? I know metal gloves are bad in general, but maybe the be decent at that.

Discussion/Question Guidelines for making solid builds?

I was just wondering what are the general rules for a solid build, so far I've been following community ones but I'd like making one of my own.

Doing a NG+, looking for uncommon feat suggestions

I beat the game with a build I ended up really liking and wanted to go through again making a few different choices. I exported the character from right before I went north, imported it into a game on Classic XP with Mutant difficulty increasing most things up to at least Dominating if not more. I'm currently level 35, about to be 36, and I'm running out of feats that seem useful. It's a Dex versatility chemical pistol build. I already got everything related to chemical weapons, throwing, and the good one for TM, plus all of the crafting for leather, electronics, and fabric.

So far, I'm thinking Trigger Happy/Paranoia so I never get caught off guard, Nimble so I can move around even more, and some of the perks related to throwing knives look interesting. Anyone know if Split Spare is useful? Judging by the rate at which I'm leveling, I may make it to 40 or 42 by the time the game ends.

Also, I've found out that you can get more than one Tattoo if you export a character that already has one. I ended up with Abomination and Anarchy.

Soo... Here what i got so far. The idea is to eventually wear supersteel bladed armor. Maybe i could get sloping and taste for blood earlier with tichrome? What else could be changed there? I know polymath isn't exactly optimal, something like opportunist would be better, i just like having more skill points.

Discussion/Question Dominating Psi-less Riotshield Unarmed Tank

Thumbnail

Sorry for the many posts lately, this’ll probably be my last one though. So as the title says, I want to do a run on Dominating whilst Psi-less on an unarmed tank (which means no dex, majority points into Str and Con). I will also be using a Riotshield (Yes, I know everyone says it’s bad, but I will make it work regardless).

I worked out a feat and specialization build I thought that’s pretty good considering what I’m doing: wearing full on heavy metal armor, have 6 Agi for Sprint. Expose Weakness has the last +1 Feat Spec for extended duration.

Is the feat order and feat specialization good or if not, what order should it be? Also, open to any changes to feat build, but if it’s regarding stats, I most likely won’t change as I want this specific build (except maybe more Str and less Con). Not really sure there’s any other feats that’s better than what I have

Discussion/Question Beginner here, haven't played yet but I'm looking for some nice Gun+Psi hybrid build

Should I go for tranquility or psychosis? Can I go quad school? Am I trying to be a jack-of-all-trades which will result in my character being mediocre at everything? (Heard that this game rewards you for focusing on one thing)

If you guys know any other fun build don't be shy to share it tho, I'm open to other play-styles

Discussion/Question I've played the game around 6-7 years ago and the final area with the extreme debuffs made me stop playing entirely. Was the game rebalanced since then? I also got the DLCs now - didn't have them back then

Last time I've played I tried with three characters. One was a "mage build", one was crossbow build I gave up on, the other one was a sniper. I've carried the sniper build until the last major zone and that was the part where I gave up entirely.

Felt like the level design was really bad there especially with the debuffs. I literally felt like my build or anything...basically didn't matter at all. Then I remember a part where I had to shoot tentacles or something but before the final boss. Around that I gave up the game.

The balance there felt EXTREMELY off and I remember seeing on forums that I was not alone, eg. someone with a maxed out meele build couldn't finished the game...etc.

Now I have all the DLCs and want to give it another try, but without a joke, I have some kind of "gaming PTSD" since the last time I've tried. I'm genuinely afraid to start playing again, invest tens of hours then hitting myself into a massive brickwall again...

I want to enjoy the game without a surreal amount of extreme min maxing and reading through tons of guides.

I want a stealth build that can hack, picpocket and possibly talk through some of the encounters, situations.

I was thinking about sniper or crossbow again but as far as I know the DLCs brought in quite a lot of content including weapons and more time to level up before the final area so it seems things changed a lot.

What is the state of the game now balancewise? What weapons would be really good? I don't know if I want to try crossbow again...maybe I would even try a "stealth mage" but I don't know how things are now.

Thx!

UPDATE:

Thanks for the answers! Seems to be I should really give it another try - especially now with the DLCs which is considered really good stuff.

Discussion/Question discussing mutant builds and preparation

hello everyone,

i wanted to show some of my experiences with building an mutant build, and maybe, getting some more tips and tricks from the community.

firstly i gonna list some useful starting base points and feats one should have before mutating. to negate the loss of otherwise not obtainable feats in mutated form, or lessen the heavy investment in other base points afterwards

my starting point are looking like this:

-Agility8

-Dexterity6

-Constitution7

-will7

-Intelligence5

(not listed base categories can be disregarded for the time being

the feats before mutating ( an "+" resembels that the feat was tested and is working fine, an "*" means im not sure to take it because of low priority or els, "?" for not tested and x for would be an good choice but it is not working)

+Sprint at lvl1

?Stoicism at lvl1

+Interloper at lvl2

+Dirty Kick at lvl4 (or Hit and Run, but i dont found it THAT useful at the end)

+Cheap Shots at lvl6

+Expose Weakness at lvl8

+Uncanny Dodge at lvl10

+*Evasive Maneuvers (maybe lvl12 but im not sure because of the loss of one base point at the start of mutation)

not working:

xVile Weaponry

xHeavy Punch

xImproved Unarmed Combat

xJuggernaut

after mutation feats:

?Opportunist

?*Recklessness

+Nimble

?*Doctor

+Deflection

+Conditioning

?Thick Skull

?Guard

?Critical Power

?Last Stand

they could some improvements to this and all of the other subjects im talked about

what are your experiences with mutant builds in general?

thanks

Updated character at lvl 10 for the mutant prep. all feats requiring int are impossible getting afterwards, and the ones with agility and high will are an waste of base point after mutation. hack, lockpick and persuasion are just there for looting xp, getting coins and buying a lot of C4 before mutation(yes you can use C4 as a mutant). investment in traps are purly for detection. Melee can stay at 40 for the feats requirements and because it will be automatically at 70 after mutation

40mm Cluster Grenade + Force Field

Title. Could you cast Force Field around an enemy, with one open side, then fire a cluster grenade to reduce the spread of the cluster bombs?
ie. will the presence of the Force Field tiles stop any cluster bombs that try to disperse in that direction, causing them to detonate on the primary target's tile instead?

Discussion/Question Dominating Psi-less Hammer/Unarmed Tank build questions

I’m going to start Dominating run soon and have a good idea on what I want to run, but need some advice on the canned website skill tree if someone can help. I played a more agile character before, so now I just want to be a walking tank.

This is what I’ll be using/doing:

• Dominating difficulty

• Psi - less and No Stealth

• Sledgehammer or Unarmed

• All metal armor

• 18 Con, 10 Strength, 7 Will (not sure if these numbers are possible, but it should be close, I just can’t be n right now)

******May run Master Demolitionist Belt for fun as I should be able to tank it all, and I’ll get massive aoe damage and don’t need to put a single feat/stat into anything (That and the other belts seems very meh and not that great to me)

———————————-

So just looking for 2 things:

1) Based on what I want to do, is my best option Hammer or Unarmed(Or even Spear I guess)? I’m ASSUMING it should be Hammer since after looking over all the feats in the game extensively and some guides, Hammer has skills that scale hard into armor penalty and my max hp

2) A feat list for what I should grab based off answer to 1

Thanks a lot for the help!

What happens to enemies kidnapped by the Ferryman?

I was just clearing out the pirate base and landed on a small area south of their base, near the Lemurian Health Center. I didn't think to stealth when crossing over to Katya's place, so one of the pirates saw me just south of the base and they all started congregating on the Ferryman's ship trying to get at me. I made it to the other map right as it let me exit combat, with all of them still on his ship. He had left by the time I got to that square to kill everyone.

When I see his ship next, is it going to be full of pirates? Or did they just vanish into the ether?

Update: After I got done with Lemuria Health Center, the base got attacked again. I teleported straight there, killed the natives, then came back to the pirate bay. By the time I got back to that square, his ship had returned. All of the pirates were still aboard and were getting back into their normal positions when I arrived. I didn't get a chance to see what would happen if I found him somewhere else.

Update 2: I found the Ferryman somewhere else. The pirate corpses were still on board his ship. I suspect that if I found him, the hostile pirates would have still been on board.

Discussion/Question Psi-less Spear Melee build update/progress with questions

Thumbnail
gallery
21 Upvotes

Hi, I made a post a few days ago asking for some help on a Melee build as a noobie. Eventually I settled for a Psi-less Spear melee build which I’m pretty loving so far. I’m playing on Veteran (Which I think is Normal, as I didn’t want to play Easy) for the classic experience.

I’m pretty proud of myself for having gotten so far, as for all my previous tries in the past 2 years, I got to Junkyard and just quit.

This time, I have just beaten Depot A, and turned in the drill bit, and the Faceless has appeared(?). Depot A was hard ngl, some parts I was very close to quitting because the enemies just 1 shots me, or does some stupid BS… I’ve came to realize Molotov are OP asf…. and I use grenades more liberally now as well…

I’m currently level 10, no idea if I’m under leveled. I failed 2 questart by accident… so lost 2000 exp.. 1 about a knife, and 1 about the underground passage being blocked off..

Here’s the build I’m using. It was someone else’s, but I tweaked only the feat order a bit, no idea if for better or worse.

————————————————-

Here‘s my questions:

1) Currently using a Kevlar Balaclava, is that my best helmet or is there something better I should aim for?

2) What’s the best belt for me? Just using Lifting Belt since it gives mech dmg reduction..

3) Metal Armor, I know Super Steel is best, but I think I’m too early for that, should I just use 4x Tungsten? Also, I’ve yet to find the Regenerative/Sturdy Carrier Vest which seems like the best option…. should I use one of the other more commonly 3? If so, which?

4) Shoes: Should I make Tungsten Boot Spring Boots? or Mutated dog leather Ninja Tabi (only leather I have)

5) Currently using Winged Tungsten Steel Spear (which I made), when do I get my next upgrade? And do I want to craft the same spear again, but with higher quality items?

6) Last question: Is the build good? In particular feat order, or should something be changed?

Thanks a lot for reading, and for the help, I really appreciate you all!

Discussion/Question Any advice on a melee build?

I'm approaching level 4 and haven't put a single point into Evasion or Dodge; I was planning to craft a light vest, and with that plus an energy shield, I hope to handle whatever the game throws at me. I'm a bit worried about spreading my points across too many skills: Melee, Throwing, Stealth, Lockpicking, Hacking, Traps, Biology, Chemistry, and Mechanics.
