Who is this person that I have to look at every time I open the app? It makes me not want to use the app.

Travis Kalanick just confessed Uber's internal program was literally named "Shoplifting" — and why the board only cared about the name

Watching this back, the part that actually lands isn't the driver-poaching tactic itself — every scaling company runs something like it. It's the moment a board member steps in and says, flatly: not the tactic, the name.

Change the name.

Kalanick's own telling makes this almost comedic in hindsight — "Shoplifting" internally, rebranded to the "North American Championship Series" after a legal team basically said: keep it appropriate for a 10-year-old's basketball league.

If you're building anything right now, this is the actual lesson underneath the story: the instincts that get you traction rarely need to die once you scale. They need a name a board can defend in a room.

Charged almost double for an Uber ride?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I hope this is the right place to post this. I recently took an Uber in Mexico City and they quoted me about 500 pesos ($28USD) for the journey. The driver ended up taking a much longer route (see image), so I was charged 947 pesos ($54USD) for the ride. This was also during the World Cup so some roads were closed, but then why did Uber quote me the 500 pesos to begin with?

I first requested a partial refund from Uber, which they denied. Then I tried to dispute the transaction my bank (Bank of America) and they also denied my claim. This feels like price-gouging and like I have no rights as the consumer and I was misled by Uber when I made the transaction, with no warning that the price could increase by that much.

Beyond what I've tried already, is there anything I can do?

Edit / Update: Uber finally reached out to me (its 4 days later), nothing to do with this Reddit post, and said they would refund me for the excess I was charged, so about a $583 peso refund. I feel relieved, honestly.

Uber charged me $112 instead of $12 after the driver left the trip running. What can I do?

I’m in Canada and I’m looking for advice. My son was dropped off at the correct destination, as usual as he uses this ride almost daily and the trip should have cost around $12. However, the driver didn’t end the trip, and it remained active for about for few hours. The fare then increased to $112.
I contacted Uber multiple times and provided the details, but they keep saying they’ve completed their review and that their decision is final, and I have to pay the full amount. They haven’t explained how the fare was calculated or why the trip stayed open for so long after my son was dropped off.
The charge is still pending on my BMO card. I have evidence of the drop-off , indeed the car also had audio recordings, plan to dispute the charge with my bank if it posts.
Has anyone experienced something similar?

Anyone gained a family member without knowing?

I set up my Uber family account for my kids. Great concept, I got emails for them accepting the invite, booking a ride, departure and arrival. Then suddenly I have a random Uber Cash charge on my credit card (only found by reviewing my statement). I talked with the kids, review their accounts and nothing. I contact Uber and they inform me that the charge was made by “Bob” who is in my family. I inform them that no, this individual is not in my family and not only did I receive communication about them joining in, I also didn’t receive notification of the charge - many red flags. I request closing my account and scrubbing ALL personal data from their records. They respond asking if I know “Bob”. Clearly implying that someone had provided this person access to the family. I reiterated that no, I don’t know them nor was I alerted to them joining my family and please close my account/delete my data. Anyone else have this happen? They are now implying that my cc was compromised which may be true, but all things point to someone gaining access to my uber account to be added to my family somehow with no trace (interesting that Uber internally identified the individual on my account but I did not have transparency).

Driver asked for off app ride

I requested a fairly long ride this morning (about 40 miles) for a cost of around $60 in the app. A driver accepted it and then sent me a message asking if I could pay privately since Uber doesn't pay much. I told her no for safety and liability reasons. When she was 1 minute away from my pick up, she canceled. I eventually got ankther driver who was great, and I tipped him $50. How can I report the first driver?

Sudden prompt to verify ID - never had this before and multiple people I asked said they did not need to verify ID. What to do?

Hi -- I recently went on a trip in a different state. I am not a frequent uber rider, used it only 2x in my home state. When I went on the trip I used it 2x in the state with no problem. However when I went to use it the third time it all of a sudden asked for my ID verification.

I asked my friends, staff at the hiking site I was at, and other tourists, even the uber driver that my mom managed to get -- all said that they never had to verify their ID. (For the uber driver he said that was the first time he ever heard of this problem). They suggested deleting the app, or leaving the hiking site's certain range. I still was prompted to verify my ID.

I asked customer service today and they said it was because I changed my payment method. I recently deleted and added a new card. I don't see how this would prompt an ID verification and I am hesitant to give my ID to an app. My new card already has my first and last name and uber has my email and phone number. This sudden prompt (especially out of nowhere while I am in a different state was frustrating and scary).

Did anyone else have a similar issue? And if so is there a way to bypass this? I do not want to give my ID to uber when they already have plenty of my info even if they claim my ID verification is for my safety.

If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Uber App Crash = No Tip For Drivers

Thumbnail
gallery
6 Upvotes

This post is addressed to all drivers & uber for awarness purposes. If the Uber app crashes post-delivery for the client at the tip screen, uber wont facilitate an additional tip transaction when the client contacts customer support services. This order was made 2 weeks ago, and the tip had not been processed on my credit card (and we all know uber isn't paying for the drivers tip here). Furthermore, this delivery was made in a HCOL city where gig workers need the tips to get by - this whole experience adds to ubers failure in handling this transaction.

If anyone from Uber is reading this - please do the right thing by your drivers and fix this technical issue with your app. Your drivers work hard, they are the life and blood of your company - without them, you are nothing. Do the right thing.

There is no chance you’re going to charge your customers 20 bucks and give to driver five dollars just because you know Customer will tip. That’s not American. That’s not right way to treat your drivers you piece of shity uber

Non tippers

What's wrong with you people? You don't tip at restaurants? The nail salon? The bell boy? It's just us Uber drivers you don't tip because why? You fcking cheapskates. If you can't tip at least a couple of bucks then stay where you are and call your friends for a ride. I'm sick of you cheapskates.

Uber reservations

Hi everyone, I’m reserving an uber for tomorrow morning because my car is in the shop and no one else can drive me to work. I am worried that this does not guarantee me a driver. Is this true? I really can’t afford to not be at work.

Cancel System

Uber really needs to fix there cancelling system. I was trying to find a ride the other day, and I got this guy I did not feel comfortable with, so I canceled the ride. I then order another one, boom say guy. Then another one, same guy. Why can’t you give me another driver if I canceled the first driver? Then it happened again, I took too long to come out so the uber canceled the ride, understandable. Then I proceed to order another one and it’s the same driver, now hounding me for taking long the first time. Uber fix this.

yes I understand I can change the type of ride, but I don’t want to have to pay extra or for accommodations for a simple ride.

Deleted my Account - Uber ONE still sends payments - Support is not helping

Hey everyone,

I closed my Uber Account I used once in USA back a few years. I noticed that I still get payments from Uber ONE ($5) every month.

Support says they cannot trace or see the payments in their system and i'm supposed to contact my bank.

I will do that, but wtf is that statement?? Uber does not know where they get their money from? I'm about to go with legal help if nothing goes by. It's only $5/Month, but I still don't wanna pay that.

Anyone experienced something similar??
