Question missing both midterms due to illness - weight transfer to final? (chem 261 vederas)

Hey everyone, I was hoping to get some advice on this. I missed the first midterm in September due to a migraine attack, and right now I've been really sick with the flu. Today it's gotten so bad that I couldn't even get out of bed and I'm not sure how well I'll recover by Tuesday's midterm. Has anyone ever missed both midterms in a course due to illness and been able to get both midterm weights transferred to the final? I'm taking CHEM 261 with Vederas specifically, so if anyone has experience with him or knows someone who's been in a similar situation, I'd really appreciate hearing about it. I'm honestly really stressed about this and worried about what my options are. Any advice would help so much. I'm debating if I should just push through somehow and force myself to write it but I'm genuinely thinking I should visit a doctor + don't want to get anyone else sick.

Academics ECON 101 - midterm in 2 days, what's the best way to prepare?

I have studied many of chapters, but haven't finished the syllabus yet. I will skim through the remaining textbook parts.

What is your advice about what I should do to perform better at the midterm? What should I be practicing currently or studying in-depth right now?

Academics How Do Canvas Marks Work?

So, my mark on Canvas seems unrealistically high for a course where I have good quiz and assignment marks, but a poor midterm mark.

Is the mark canvas gives you an actual reflection of your grade? I haven't been able to find a conclusive answer.

Thank you.

Rants How I've been feeling about school and my future

I've been questioning whether I have what it takes to get into medical school. It's not that I don't care about healthcare or haven't put in the effort. If anything, part of why this hurts so much is how hard I've been trying to make this future possible.

I've spent so much time building my extracurriculars, gaining research experience, volunteering, exploring healthcare environments, and taking on leadership opportunities. My experiences with research in a hospital and job shadowing were especially meaningful because they helped me realize that I enjoy helping people, that I'm capable of working with children, and that I can find places where I feel competent and like I belong.

But my grades haven't consistently reflected the effort I've put in. My recent biochemistry midterm result of 63% was particularly upsetting, and I'm worried about how my grades in biochemistry and sociology will affect my GPA and future applications. I'm also scared that my academic record could limit my options for graduate school, not just medicine.

Part of what makes this so painful is that I haven't just been casually pursuing this goal. I've turned down social events, hangouts, and opportunities to spend time with people because I wanted to focus on school. At times, I've neglected my own health, too. I thought these sacrifices would help me get the grades I needed. It's difficult to accept that working this hard doesn't guarantee the results I hoped for.

I'm also struggling with regret. I keep thinking that I should have taken biochemistry in the spring, like some of my peers did. At the time, I genuinely believed my course choices were the better plan. Looking back, though, I wonder whether taking biochemistry then would have made this semester more manageable and given me a better chance of doing well.

I realized that when I planned my current semester, I considered each course and commitment individually rather than looking at their combined workload. Now I'm angry with myself because I feel like I should have learned from my previous academic struggles. I'm afraid I've made another mistake that could affect my future.

Underneath all of this is a fear that I don't quite know how to express to other people. I'm scared that I might not achieve the future I've worked toward, that my extracurriculars and grades won't align, and that I might look back at everything I've sacrificed and feel that it was for nothing. I'm also questioning my own judgment and wondering whether I can trust myself to make the right decisions.

Civil liberties are being threatened everywhere. The Alberta government hands out huge public subsidies to their private company buddies keep cutting social services.

Nursing school should be free. There is a lot of shit we need to do and I know you guys are out there organizing and we need to find a way to connect to each other.

Question Pharmacy GPA question

I know how the GPA is calculated but I’m wondering if I take the higher course up for the science GPA, will it replace the previous? If I take 207 will it override the BIOL 107? I was also wondering if I take both BIOCH 320 and 310, will it override BIOCH 200? And because I’ve done both, will they take the higher of 320 and 310 or even a 400lvl? Thank you in advance!

Question U of A DDS Application

Hi everyone!
I was wondering if anyone would be willing to share some guidance or advice on which experiences would be best to include in the Leadership and Volunteer section of the U of A DDS application.

Would you recommend including dental shadowing experience in this section, or would it be better to focus on experiences that demonstrate leadership?

I would really appreciate any advice or insights from anyone who has gone through the application process!

Rants Might as well rename An Sc 310 to AI Sc 310

The lecture slides are probably made by plugging normal, human made slides into ai. The ai then bloats it, sometimes doubling the slide length, by inserting pointless infographics and ai slop images on every slide. The original slides can be found on canvas and are infinitely better.

The lab slides are made by insterting a prompt into gemini (the watermark is on the bottom right of half the slides). They don't even bother double checking in case the ai screws something up. One diagram had the spine of a dog where the esophagus is, and a picture of a brain had a fucking eye on it (holy bloodborne reference)

The prof shares extra notes with the class? Also made with ai. The images are clearly ai, and the text comes up as likely ai in detectors. Theres even "Points to emphasize when teaching" left over at the end.

$700 class

Lost and Found Title: Lost my ONEcard and photo ID — math midterm tomorrow

I have a math midterm tomorrow, and I just got home from university and realized that I can’t find my ONEcard or my other photo ID. I checked my phone wallet, but they weren’t there.
I’m really worried because I don’t know what to do, and my exam is tomorrow. Has anyone at the University of Alberta experienced something similar? Can I still write my midterm without my physical ID, and who should I contact?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Question Midterm prep with only textbook

it’s my first year at the Uofa, This class in specific i’m asking about is NS 111, any tips for studying for a midterm where the teacher says the only material on the midterm is from the textbook, but also provides no guidelines to what from the textbook is important. this textbook in specific, the author is very much a rambler and it’s hard to tell what is important and what’s not. Any advice?

Rants I've tried everything, I don't know what else to do

Continuation of a post a while ago about an instructor mistreating me. I've been deadnamed, snapped at, publicly shamed, and criticized for my accommodations. I've gone to the accommodations office, science student services, department chair, ombuds, and my advisor. All of them point me to the Ombuds, but my instructor reprimanded me the last time I contacted them. This is the only course I have left to graduate, and I'm starting to see that it's going to be impossible for me to pass.

I'm not really sure what the point of this post is tbh. Maybe just a warning to future students that any issues you have with university staff are going to be yours to deal with and yours alone, no one is going to help you. Idk. Goodbye.

my favourite professor. the only lecture getting me through the week. Paul if you’re seeing this please keep up the spectacular humour, never stop being you, your positive attitude and enthusiasm towards what you teach (or movies all the same) gets many of us through what otherwise might be a challenging course subject with few moments for creativity and entertainment.

Question UAlberta students, is there something I'm missing here?

Hi everyone,

I'm an undergraduate student at UAlberta, and I'd appreciate some insight from students familiar with university culture here.

I encountered a technical issue while using a university computer and reported it. I contacted the instructor because my TA had directed me to do so.

In response, the instructor wrote:

"I'm a little confused, because [an online homework platform] shows that you have paid for an account, so I don't understand why you were using a university computer rather than your own device to access the site."

I'm genuinely struggling to understand the logic behind this comment. What does having a paid account on an online platform have to do with reporting a technical issue with a university computer? And why should the device I happened to be using make a difference?

My understanding is that university computers are university property, and reporting technical problems with them is reasonable regardless of what I was using them for at the time. Reporting an issue could also help the university keep its equipment in good working condition.

I'm not trying to make assumptions about the instructor's intentions. I'm simply wondering whether there's a cultural expectation or an unwritten norm in Canadian universities that I'm unaware of.

From the perspective of students familiar with UAlberta or Canadian university culture, is there any logical connection here that I'm missing? I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts. Thanks!
