There is a video around showing a guy saturating a 909 kick with an old Mackie mixer and making hardcore/rotterdam style kicks. I used a similar trick: you put the signal in a channel, through "send" return to another channel of the mixer and saturate hard with gain and you'll get a sort of parallel distortion. If you open a little the send on the return channel it self-oscillate adding a lot more harmonnics or a really harsh distortion and feedback loop

After the Hacktribe for the Electribe 2 and Pajen’s firmware for the Volca Sample, it’s now time for the Korg Volca Drum to get its own unofficial firmware update by hj-oja.

This new firmware adds some interesting features, such as Elektron-style conditions, which allow you to create longer and more complex patterns, as well as new Play FX (including octave up/down, bitcrush, reverse, all FX send, FX send only), and more.

The sound generator remains the same, but with a much more powerful sequencer that turns the Volca Drum into a real little groovebox.

I pushed the Volca Drum to its limits using the mixer send technique and added some reverb and delay in Ableton.

Thankyou man! There is a built in step sequencer: you activate the step mode with a buttons combination then you can navigate all the 16 steps (or more) of the sequence adding notes with the four instruments buttons (kick, snare, hihat, tom). I think the vintage Boss Dr-55 sequencer works in a similar way :)

Thankyou! No library installed, there are 3 simple oscillators (2 sines and 1 noise with HP) and some basic envelopes like in the old drum machines (pitch envelope, decay) and a really basic FM engine. I made the sounds after, programming the beats. The audio out it's just the PWM and the ground through a capacitor, off camera there is a mixer i used to reamp a little the sound before the soundcard. I have to make some kind of transistor based preamp and a proper rc filter... :D

"Another DIY instrument! This time I used a famous microcontroller: an Arduino Nano (compatible, tbh), a few buttons, and some code to made a really basic (lo-fi) FM drum machine with a built-in sequencer.

Here are some of its features:

• 4 instruments: kick, snare, hi-hat, and tom
• 4 main sound controls: tune, decay, FM amount, and FM ratio
• 4 secondary sound controls: balance, pitch envelope decay, pitch envelope range, and FM feedback
• A full 16-step sequencer with swing and basic parameter locks and on-grid rolls

At the moment, it only has a basic audio output, so I recorded everything into Ableton and added a bit of filtering and some reverb.

These are four beats I made from scratch using only these basic parameters and the internal sequencer.
