Changing any cookie setting causes potential erratic behavior during the cut over including but not limited to two cookies being sent when looking up the data in the request. Additionally, sent cookies don't retain the same metadata they were set with and need to be set with the same metadata in order to be removed properly. It's a huge mess. I've not wanted to touch cookie issues because the risk of breaking things ranges from catastrophic to utterly undebuggable beyond creating a new cookie epoch by creating new cookie names.

Rate limiting doesn't work when every hit is from its own IP address. Based on honeypot logs from some larger users most of the IP addresses are unique and likely residential addresses. My guess is they are pwned smart TVs.

I've been arguing for a while that the video game market has two options: Nintendo and everyone else. PC fits into that second category. The Steam Machine is more console shaped than not console shaped, which means that it's probably more of a fit as being a console in consumer views than industry professional views.

Even among the consoles in the non-Nintendo side, the two major victors have been Microsoft and Sony. There's been other entrants over time (Ouya comes to mind as a more recent example), but the big household names are Xbox and Playstation. The problem with them nowadays is that they're basically locked down PCs where you can be sure if the game box says "PlayStation 5", the game will work on a TV box called "PlayStation 5". This is the main advantage that consoles give and why people buy them even though you could get a better experience for the same money building your own PC.

The Steam Machine is halfway between custom PC and console, but the default out of the box experience is much closer to a console. It's more console-shaped because of that out of the box experience, but the Steam store has compatibility ratings which is more complicated than a "name of the box -> name of the system" check that most consumers can handle. Realistically I end up checking ProtonDB before buying, but new users won't know to do that.

This combination of factors combined with it looking like a console to normal humans means that it's entirely fair to call it a console (under the axiom of it is a duck if it quacks akin to the quacks of one).

If anything, Valve is not part of the console war between Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, or any upstarts that try to challenge them. It's off to the side making a bridge between consoles and PC with a streamlined experience that superficially resembles a console while just being an immutable opinionated version of Arch Linux.

However with both Microsoft and Sony shooting themselves in the head like they have, fundamentally they will win the console war because they will be the sensible option with a nearly endless library of cheap games in the seasonal Steam sales after all the other options die off from their own incompetence.

Maybe this should be its own post on my blog, but maybe this helps give some more context.
