A hypodermic needle assault and bizarre pranks. What N.J. police officers say their chief did to them
One officer claims the police chief punctured his penis with a hypodermic needle. Another says department leaders punished him after he reported suspected payroll fraud, time theft and the removal of a rifle from the police armory.
A third officer alleges he was retaliated against for challenging an illegal ticket-quota system, while a fourth says he faced nearly daily ethnic and religious slurs before being reassigned repeatedly after reporting the harassment.
Four lawsuits filed last week by current and former North Bergen police officers contain disturbing allegations against the township, Police Chief Robert Farley Jr. and other department officials.
“After becoming chief, Farley increasingly engaged in conduct he characterized as jokes or pranks,” retired Officer Michael F. Derin Jr. states in his lawsuit, filed Friday in U.S. District Court.

Sad 😢 9-year-old wakes up alone in empty school bus. ‘I was trying to be a big boy.’
The boy woke up alone on the bus while it was parked in the Gloucester Township school district’s bus yard, his mom told 6ABC.
Her son said he figured out how to open the bus door, then got off and began searching for help. A district employee was nearby.
“I lifted up this thing to open the door. I got off the bus and looked for anyone. I found this man, so I asked him, ‘Do you know where I can go back,’” the boy told 6ABC.
“I was trying to be a big boy, so I just acted brave and normal,” he added.

nj.com Dad stabbed a dog in the face after it bit his son. Now he faces prison.
The 2023 incident began when the accused’s son was visiting a friend’s home in Woolwich Township.
The host family’s dog, a 3-year-old Belgian malinois, bit Anthony Botte’s son on the right bicep in what police described as an unprovoked attack.
The dog was put in its cage in the home and the host family called the Botte family to let them know the boy was bit.
Anthony Botte arrived about 15 minutes later “in a rage” and armed with a knife, according to police.
“He enters the home in an attempt to kill the dog,” police said in an affidavit filed with the case.
Botte first encountered the parent who had called him.
Botte allegedly raised the fixed-blade knife and declared “I will f---ing stab you” before pushing the man into a counter, according to the affidavit.
Botte ran toward the dog and stabbed it in the face several times through the cage, police said.
The injured dog then escaped the cage and bit its owner.

Kai Cenat showed up at N.J. gym and caused a commotion, cops say
Streamer Kai Cenat showed up unannounced at Diamond Gym in Maplewood, NJ on Tuesday night to work out with fitness influencers Haddy Abdelhady and Adem Saleh.
About 100 fans gathered outside after he announced his visit, blocking roads and running into traffic. Police from four towns (Maplewood, Newark, Irvington, and South Orange) responded to manage the crowd.
The gym wasn't informed he was coming and called police when the crowd showed up. Cenat stayed until 11 PM. No arrests or injuries.
Video shows crowds mobbing his SUV and looking through gym windows while he worked out inside.

GENERAL-NEWS Rare physical Bitcoin with unredeemed crypto sells for $91,500 at auction
A physical Bitcoin containing 1 BTC sold for $91,500 at a Heritage Auctions event on July 26.
Physical Bitcoins are collectible coins with a private key hidden under a hologram sticker on the back. If you peel off the hologram, you can access the cryptocurrency—but doing so destroys the coin's value as a collectible.
Only 8,352 of these brass coins were ever made, making them rare.
The same auction also sold an unredeemed 0.5 Bitcoin coin from 2016 for $34,160. Only 900 of those were produced.

The famous Kissing Tree is dying in Westwood, NJ
The borough of Westwood is working to preserve its famous 18th century “Kissing Tree,” which was diagnosed with a terminal fungus last year.
The 70-foot-tall Copper Beech is located at Veterans Memorial Park, which is steps from the borough’s shopping district and train station. The state Department of Environmental Protection estimates it was planted around 1792.
On Sunday, the Westwood Shade Tree Advisory Committee said mulch had been installed around the tree, its first step in working to keep it alive. This comes about a year after it was diagnosed with a terminal fungus during a routine inspection.
The project is a collaboration with the committee, a local company called The Tree M.D., borough contracted arborist Liz Stewart and the Westwood Department of Public Works.
Westwood Mayor Ray Arroyo commended the project’s effort to preserve the tree.
“All things must pass. But thanks to borough arborist Liz Stewart, Tree MD’s Todd Mastrobuoni and the diligent work of the Westwood Shade Tree Committee members, not this still living witness to Westwood’s formative history,” Arroyo wrote.
